Meet My Cover Model (and a giveaway!)

April 28, 2017 By Becky Wade

True to You, Book #1 in my new Bradford Sisters Romance series, releases this coming Tuesday! I’m celebrating in several ways, including today’s interview with cover model Joanna and a giveaway just for Inspired by Life and Fiction readers.  (More about that at the end of this post!)

Many thanks to Joanna for graciously answering my questions.  I think she did a fantastic job on True to You’s cover and I’m grateful to her.

Please tell me a little bit about yourself. I’m the youngest of three, born and raised in Minnesota. I work as an occupational therapist in a transitional care unit. I’m raising a border terrier mix puppy whose energy and curiosity keep me on my toes!

Joanna and her puppy, Pippa.

What are your hobbies? I love trying new things, but some activities I’ve always enjoyed are hiking, canoeing, traveling, reading, horseback riding and volunteering.

Kayaking in Florida

How did you become the cover model for True to You? One of my good friends works for Bethany House Publishers and thought I’d be a good fit for the character—it was a fun phone call to get! [Joanna’s good friend is Noelle, the Marketing Director at Bethany House.]

When you think back to the day of the cover shoot, what memories stick out? Right before me, a contestant from a network reality TV show was doing a photo shoot for the cover of a sci-fi thriller.

Feeding a wallaby in Kuranda, Australia

Nora is a modern day girl who enjoys dressing with vintage flair.  The dress they selected for the shoot is lovely!  Was the skirt that full naturally?  To get volume in the skirt, two of the people on set stood on either side of me holding the hem of my dress; then, on the photographer’s cue, they would drop it to evoke that 1950’s silhouette.

What do you think of the finished cover? I think the entire team did an exceptional job creating a cover that captures the spirit of the character and her world! I hope it makes readers want to dive right into Nora’s story.

Hiking in Tennessee

And now (just for fun) a quiz to see how similar you are to Nora Bradford, the heroine of True to You….

Are you an avid reader? Absolutely! At any given time, I’m probably in the middle of three different books.

Do you ever wear your hair in retro pin-up girl styles?  As a model, my hair has been treated to many fascinating hairstyles!

Are you a passionate tea drinker?  Yes, my sister went to school in England, and when I visited her, we made sure to try any number of teas.

Have you ever visited Washington state?  No, but I have friends that live in Seattle and hope to make it out there soon!

Do you have a weakness for Navy SEALS?  If I ever meet one, I’ll let you know!

Are you interested in history and genealogy?  Yes, family is very important to me. I always love learning more about ancestors’ lives and the past.

Thanks, Joanna!

Before I go, here are a few fun things I wanted to call your attention to, readers….

  • Tuesday, May 2nd at 7pm at the Lincoln Park Barnes & Noble in Dallas I’ll be giving an author chat, handing out prizes, chatting with readers and signing books.  p.s. There will be cookies.  I’d love to see you there if you live near Dallas.
  • There’s still time to read Then Came You, the prequel novella that introduces the Bradford family!  It’s free for e-download and only $5.99 in print.  For a list of retailers that carry Then Came You, click here.
  • I’ll be donating half of what I earn on sales of True to You between May 2nd and May 9th to a wonderful organization that serves our veterans called Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.  My Porter family characters were Marines and John Lawson, hero of True to You, is a former Navy SEAL.  It’s been an honor to support our real life heroes through my fictional ones.
  • Thursday, May 4th at 7pm CST on my Facebook author page I’ll be hosting a virtual launch party complete with a live video Q&A, presents, and fun.  You’re invited!

Many thanks to everyone who entered the below giveaway!  I loved reading all of your encouraging comments.  Big congratulations to Patti Hansen, the winner.  Enjoy!

Do you have anything in common with cover model Joanna?

The only things I have in common with the model are I am the youngest of three children and I love to read. Love the cover, by the way, especially the dress!

    • Becky Wade says

      April 28, 2017 at 7:57 am

I know! That dress! It’s intricate and classy and I love the color. Amy Green, the publicist at Bethany House, wore the dress during a Christmas party she hosted on Facebook. It was a fun surprise when I arrived at the Christmas party to find her wearing True to You’s cover dress. 🙂

I have a few things in common with the Joanna. I use to love to hike before walking became difficult but I still take short treks when I can. I do love to volunteer. It’s a way of helping and it makes you feel good about yourself as well. I’ve never been to the state of Washington but I’d love to see it some day. I also love to read and tea. 🙂 Thank you for this wonderful chance to win a very generous prize pack! <3

“I use to love to hike before walking became difficult but I still take short treks when I can” Good for you for continuing to walk as you’re able, Kay! I’m happy to discover so many tea drinkers here.

Oh I have been waiting for True to You for what seems like forever! (Loved the novella and the epistolary style, had to look that word/spelling up, lol!)

Lets see…things in common with Joanna…I’m also the third born and was the baby of the family until five years later when mama had twins. I like to read, like tea and traveling and did my fair share of hiking and volunteering when I was younger.
I can’t wait to read True to You and this new series, thanks for the giveaway!

    • Becky Wade says

      April 28, 2017 at 8:00 am

You’re welcome! I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed my novella. Writing something in that epistolary (I always have to think on the spelling, too) format was a refreshing creative challenge.

  8. Joelle Strandquist says

      April 28, 2017 at 8:02 am

Wow — three at a time! I only occasionally read that many at a time and when I do they’re all somewhat different. 1 fiction book, 1 audio book, 1 non-fiction book for research. 🙂

    • Becky Wade says

      April 28, 2017 at 8:09 am

The novella can serve as a “companion piece” to the series and be read at any time. But if you’re someone who enjoys reading books in a series in chronological order, then I do recommend reading it first. 😉

But love a good glass of Southern sweet tea. Congratulations on the book. And thanks for honoring our military! And the subject of adoption and genealogy!

    • Becky Wade says

      April 28, 2017 at 8:14 am

  41. Barb S. says

    April 28, 2017 at 7:03 am

Love your books, Becky! I am an avid reader…I love the fact that so many of us have multiple books at a time in which we are reading! Also, family history is high priority. We still have reunions with my father’s side of the family…the patriarch was my great-grandfather…he had 8 children with my great-grandmother. He was a minister and I was privileged to be a member of one of the churches he was at. We still sing hymns at each reunion and many of our family members are Christians…I love our rich family history!

    • Becky Wade says

Joanna appears to be having a lot of fun hiking and kayaking. I have never been kayaking, but love the water. Same with hiking. I love long walks, so would probably enjoy hiking. These pictures make me want to get out into nature more.

  47. Katie Seehusen says

    April 28, 2017 at 7:14 am

Books and tea. I read constantly and usually about 4 or 5 at a time. I will pretty much read anything, I really haven’t met a book I didn’t like. As long and the characters and good and the story is interesting (without racy bits, I don’t like racy bits) I will read it. I have always been a tea drinker, I like it black and strong with a hint of fruit aroma (I’m a bit of a tea snob) I love finding news teas and when I was in London, High Tea was a super fun experience.

    • Becky Wade says

      April 28, 2017 at 8:19 am

You’ll have to check out Jane of Austin by Hillary Manton Lodge! I believe it’s coming out in June. The heroine is a tea maker and the information about tea that’s stitched through the story is both interesting and charming.

I always enjoy learning about the people who appear on book covers and Joanna sounds like a fun person to know–I also share the love of books, tea, genealogy, hiking, and traveling. 118. Amanda Geaney says

    April 28, 2017 at 12:48 pm

We have a few things in common. 🙂
First, I love to read. I’m also an outdoorsy kind of girl who likes to hike, geocache, and camp. Last year we canoed down the Buffalo River and it was amazing! I learned on that trip that my daughter is the better canoe partner of our two children bc the boy likes to perch himself in the bow like he’s auditioning for a Titanic remake. She was also the first to spot the water snake maneuver our boat to the outside—putting the boy’s boat between us and the serpent. Finally, I ❤️ vintage dresses, but usually opt for jeans, tees, and muck boots around the farm.

    @AmandaGeaney

P.S. If you have a graphic for the Intrepid Hero promo I’ll share it on my social media outlets. I’m a vet and my husband is currently serving.

I am an avid reader, I love tea (hot or cold), I live in Oregon so I visit WA State quite often (my sis-in-law lives there) and I’m extremely interested in genealogy! I have a distant aunt or cousin who has traced our family tree down to the very founding couple for our branch. They immigrated from Prussia (no idea of the year) and the spelling of our name changed. Probably due to whoever was writing down names couldn’t pronounce it or couldn’t spell it correctly. 🙂 Another rumor was two brothers had a fight and split from the family, thus changing the spelling of the last name. I’m not sure which is true, lol!

    Thanks for the giveaway chance!
