My Colorado Favorites (and a giveaway!)

July 27, 2018 By Becky Wade

I’m in the Caribbean at the moment with my husband!  He’s teaching tennis and I’m relaxing, reading, and eating seafood.  It’s heavenly. Please extend a warm welcome to my friend Jill Buteyn, who’s guest-posting for me today. Thanks so much for joining  us, Jill! -Becky

Most of my days are spent (quite uneventfully) staring at a white page on my laptop or writing words that I’ll come back to fix later. While my kids are in school, I buckle down and write. Even if mornings aren’t my best for creativity, I try to get some words down. By afternoon, it’s finally coming to me…and that’s when I head out to pick up my kids and cart them to their various activities.

I knew I wanted to write a guest ranch in my latest series, but I wasn’t sure exactly where to begin. So first I just allowed myself to dream up a ranch and a town. (That was fun!) I enjoyed setting my new Colorado Grooms series in the Rocky Mountains outside of Denver.

Then I began drafting and figuring out character personalities. I plunked my way through a draft—my first drafts leave much to desire, but at least there’s something on the page that I can work with.

After getting down the bulk of my ideas, I scheduled a research day. (I realize this may sound backwards, but I had been doing online research up until this point. Now I wanted to make sure it was legit.) The very gracious Lost Valley Ranch allowed me to come out for an afternoon and ask all of the questions I’d had pile up while I was drafting. It was so fun to leave my computer behind and explore. They shared ideas with me, a few of which inspired some scenes in the second book in the series. They also answered countless questions. I stopped along the way to take precisely one million pictures. And I came home excited about new ideas while confirming previous ones.

So I thought since I got to explore my beautiful state, I’d take you along for the ride and share a few of my favorite things about Colorado.

Colorado views are ahh-mazing.

I grew up in Minnesota, so there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t stop to look at the mountains in Colorado. They change every day and are always showing off.

Need space? We’ve got it.

In the city, Colorado houses and people can be packed tight. But there’s always lots of open space and scenery to be found nearby.

We have great summer weather.

Summer temps are often in the eighties, but even if it’s warmer, it will still cool off at night. Can’t beat that mountain air. It’s perfect for sitting on the porch.

Even the roads are pretty.

I can admit it—I have a habit of snapping photos of roads wherever we go. There’s just something about that imagery that draws me in.

I love a Colorado sunset—with mountains or without.

I hope you enjoyed coming along for the ride. (Time for everyone to climb out of my car. 😉 Since my husband can’t stand a dirty vehicle, I have no doubt he’ll be washing the road trip off of it any minute.)

Thanks for hosting me, Becky! (I loved your latest—Falling for You. Corbin quickly won me over with his humor.)

You’re welcome, Jill!  And I’m so happy to hear that Corbin won you over. 🙂

Also, congratulations to Vivian Furbay!  Vivian entered the giveaway Jill offered here and won a copy of The Rancher’s Surprise Daughter.

What do you love most, readers, about a) Colorado or b) cowboy heroes?

I love the weather in Colorado. Clear skies, no humidity, no mosquitoes (I live in Connecticut). But even more, Colorado is where my grandchildren live. 🤗

Those views are beautiful. I’ve never been out that way but would love to visit. I’ve always been drawn to the “West” and the idea of cowboys is a romantic concept but also to me it represents a slower pace and enjoyment of life.

While I’ve only been in Colorado once–landing at the Denver airport and then driving to Colorado Springs for a visit that lasted several days, I loved the views. The Garden of the Gods is unlike anything I had seen previously. We toured Focus on the Family’s headquarters and stayed at the Broadmoor. It was a superb visit so different from our lives in the Southeast and in Houston, TX.
