Many authors are reluctant to name their favorite book they’ve written—it’s akin to naming our favorite child!—but now that I’ve written over thirty-five books, a few have risen to the top. One of those in my top five…maybe top three…is my novel A Nest of Sparrows. That book also now wears my favorite all-time book cover, designed by my talented husband Ken Raney.
I wanted to let our e-book readers know that A Nest of Sparrows is FREE for Kindle today only, thanks to BookBub. You can download your free copy from
A Nest of Sparrows is also available in a wonderful new audiobook format narrated by Julie Lancelot, who has become one of my favorite audio readers around! She did such a great job of capturing the many characters in this book and I am so grateful for her talent! Click HERE if you wish to purchase the audiobook version.
Do you “judge a book by its cover”? How important are book covers when you are deciding what to read next? What are some of your favorite all-time book covers? I’d love to hear from you in the comments! Happy Monday!

The cover does influence my choice of books, but the reviews and the blurb about the book influence me even more than the covers
Deborah Raney says
I agree with you, Suzanne. It’s a combination. But the cover is a strong one for me!
Angie Quantrell says
Happy Monday! Covers are very important to me, but mostly if I am ‘looking’ for something to read. If I’ve already fallen in love with a series or a writer or topic, the cover is not as important. But I LOVE a great cover! I love the new cover with the hands and nest! Gorgeous!
Deborah Raney says
Thanks so much! And good point about a cover not being quite as important if you already love the series or writer.

Thank you for the free e-book! I just downloaded it! Covers are important, but as someone said before me, if I already enjoy an author, the covers only mean so much. As a devoted Kindle reader, the covers mean a bit less. Sometimes, I read a book and then go back on Amazon and look at the cover again!
Deborah Raney says
That’s one thing I had to get used to reading e-books! When I read a print book (my first choice!) I refer back to the cover every few pages! Especially if it’s one that has hidden meaning or that has a lot to look at.

I have read this book and it was fabulous! I loved it.
Deborah Raney says
Awww, thanks so much, Regina! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s one of the hardest books I’ve ever written—difficult research, long hours writing when we still had kids at home…but I think it was worth it. Like I said, it’s grown to be one of my favorite books I’ve written.

Well, for me I don’t pay much attention, unless( I’m revealing a big point here) the picture is a man. Then I’m going to pick that book up and really study that guy. I’ll drool a little, then read the blurb to see if he is a good guy or a bad guy. Now if that guy has a cowboy hat or a horse with him I’m all in! Thanks for the e-book, hope you have a great day and if I was able to make you chuckle or even smile I’m grateful! Have a really great day!
Deborah Raney says
LOL! You sure did make me chuckle, smile AND LOL! 🙂 Hope you have a great day too, Pam!

The new cover is definitely more compelling. I love bird nests, and have watched hummingbirds hatch. They are so tiny! Thank you for the book, it looks fascinating.

I read mostly e-books now, after decades of dedicated library use. The covers are very important to me in book choices, and with Kindle Fire, the covers are in color, and I always look at the cover before reading, and often look back during the read.
Deborah Raney says
Thanks so much for the input, Susan. I don’t know why but I don’t look back at the cover as often with an ebook. And I miss that!
