A Gift and a Giveaway

January 12, 2021 By Julie Klassen

I was surprised and touched to receive an amazing gift from a talented quilter-friend: a quilt based on the coverlet Jane Austen made with her mother and sister.

Vicki Jones, quilter Bryan Jones, and me.

The original coverlet quilt is on display at Jane Austen’s House Museum, which we visited during a group tour I was privileged to host in 2019. We saw the quilt (and much more) during the visit and I am honored and delighted to now have this beautiful replica.

Display case at Jane Ausen’s House Museum, Chawton, England.

Here is a close-up view of the Austens’ quilt:

Quilt detail: Jane Austen’s House Museum.

Since it is so much fun to give as well as to receive, I’d like to give away a small gift. Bryan and Vicki gave me charming Microfiber Lens Cloths featuring Jane’s Coverlet  and I would like to share one with someone who admires Jane Austen, too.

If that’s you, leave a comment with your email address (use the (at) and (dot) format, e.g. julie(at)julieklassen(dot)com). Thank you!

I also visited Jane Austen’s House Museum a few years ago, as I love Jane Austen (I just finished watching the latest movie version of Emma!). Now I am living so far away in Minnesota, USA, I am thrilled when I see any Austen news/information to make me feel I at home in England again. Beautiful quilt.

Jane Austen is a treasured favorite of mine–especially Emma and Persuasion–and I also love your books, too, Julie–The Silent Governess is my favorite. I was 16 when I watched Pride and Prejudice (BBC 1995). I loved it! I read the book and was amazed that it could still mesmerize me considering it was over 200 years old. I’ve been following all productions of Jane Austens work. I visited the museum in Bath. There was a time I loved to go back in time and wish I could live in Jane Austens era. But a bbc documentary made me realize that woman had not much freedom and there were very strict ways to behave. I could not do that today. I love your books Julie. I often read them in 2 or 3 days and I love it that you take me back in time.

The lectures I’ve heard on English paper piecing method used in the quilt made by Jane Austen and her family have been fascinating! How wonderful you have admirers willing to put their loving talents into creating a replica for you! Here’s a writeup of the full-scale facsimile quilt made by members of Chicago’s Jane Austen Society of North America for their 1988 JASNA Annual General Meeting.https://www.jasnachicago.org/about/history-greater-chicago-region

Oh my word! I am EVERYTHING JANE AUSTEN! I love this quilt, I want the microfiber cloth even if I have to find out where to purchase it from. 🙂 I eat sleep and drink Jane Austen. It was actually by happenstance while reading one of the Jane Austen posts someone made that mentioned you and your books, so basically I am one of your avid fan/followers because of Jane Austen. 🙂 I read all of your books Julie. 🙂 No matter if I win or not, I am always going to be in your fan club and continuing to read that next book. When I was reading the Ivy Hill Christmas and Arabella Awdry was basically telling Richard Brockwell no to a proposal, I noticed that she did it Jane Austen style. 🙂 I LOVED THAT PART!
