A Heart for Writers 

For the past six years I’ve been mentoring writers, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. So many have signed with agents (yay!), are getting so close to being published (double yay!), or are published now (triple yay!). 

I’ve been so blessed by the women and men that I’ve worked with. Mentoring brings me joy. I feel honored to be able to work with writers, to help guide them in the craft, to see their writing improve. 

So many different voices and storytelling approaches. I’ve learned just as much from them as they’ve gleaned from me. They were kind enough to nominate me for ACFW Mentor of the Year, and I was beside myself winning. It has been and continues to be an honor to get to work with writers.  To watch them grow and to see how God has created them so unique in perspective and in their approach to writing. They are each truly one of a kind. 

I love celebrating the wins with them and feel privileged to be able to comfort them with virtual hugs when there’s a negative. Each mentee I’ve worked with bounces back, full of resilience, when they get cruddy contest feedback or a “no” from a publisher. They don’t give up; they press on (after a good cry—I’ve been there myself). They continue to strive forward and to continue to grow.

I also love the writing retreats I host twice a year, though I plan to take 2027 off due to a new publisher and a new contract that I want to fully focus my attention on. However, I’m so excited about my upcoming October retreat (I have two spots left. If you’re interested, leave a comment below and we can touch base). Fall in the Lancaster, PA area is breathtaking. The leaves are gorgeous, and there are pumpkins everywhere. It’s a wonderful time to curl up with a cozy blanket on the couch, sipping hot cider as we go through our workshops.

Some of the attendees are mentees, but many are new to me, and I love it. It’s so fun getting to know new women and seeing the camaraderie in the group. Most leave with a new friend or two. 

I’m so thankful for the opportunity to mentor writers, and I hope I get to continue to do so for years to come.
