My favorite small town is the one where I grew up: DeKalb, MS. The town’s claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of former U.S. Senator John Stennis, who served in Congress for something like 40 years, rising to the position of Chair of the Armed Services Committee. There is now an aircraft carrier named after him! But my most cherished aspect of my hometown are my lifelong friends. They are just solid, wonderful people.

My favorite small town is Glenbrooke-the town where Robin Jones Gunn’s series is set. I know it’s not a real place, but I love that series!

In 2012, After graduation and getting married within a couple of weeks of each other, my new husband and I moved to Halstead, KS with a population of just over 2,000. It’s a wonderful place! Kind people who invite you over fur supper, families who let their kids roam town and know others will keep an eye on your kids too, and we loved walking the 7 blocks to buy groceries at the small-locally-owned grocery store (or eating fresh pizza from the amazing place on Main Street). I loved teaching at the local primary school and becoming a part of this community. What a great place to raise a family!
Deborah Raney says
Jennifer, my parents lived just outside of Halstead, KS for about 12-13 years before my mom had to go into assisted living. They loved it there. I have a dear friend—one of my “Club Deb” friends—who grew up there as well!

The small town of LeRoy, Illinois is my favorite. We moved there when our family was young, added one more child to the two we brought with us, and stayed there until all three graduated from high school. It was a great “family” town to raise kids in.
Cheryl H. says
My favorite small town is Ellijay, in the North Georgia mountains. It is historic, comfortable, friendly, and gorgeous. Sitting in a cabin along the Coosawattee River with the Blue Ridge mountains as a backdrop is hard to beat!
Jeanne Doyon says
My favorite fictional small town is Cedar. Cove…and my favorite small town is Pomfret, CT. 4500 population. Beautiful rolling hills, ivy covered church walls, and stone walls everywhere. We have only two traffic lights too.

My favorite small town is my small town. We live in a Village called Greenhills. Though we are in the middle of city, it is still small town to me. We have a mayor, parades, and lots history. Your new book looks great. Can’t wait to read.

My favourite small town is the one where I live in eastern Ontario, Canada. Why? Because it’s home, and the place where I have family roots that go back several generations.
Amy says
Oh! Stars Hollow, CT! It may be fictional, but it sure looks sweet & quirky!
Patti H says
My favorite small town is Atoka, Oklahoma. It has an interesting mix of farmers and ranchers, Choctaw Indians, and Amish from a neighboring community. Beautiful rolling hills and kind neighbors watching out for each other.
Amy P says
I think I have to agree with the other Amy above and say Stars Hollow. It may not be real… but it sure would be a fun place to live!

My favorite small town is the town in which I was privileged to grow up: Tupelo, MS! I still have my best friends from there – 43 years of friendship and counting!
Deanne Patterson says
My favorite small town is Ligonier,PA. It’s where my grandparents lived and I would go there for Summer vacations as a child. Ligonier is such a scenic town. It’s in the country but yet has all the shops you need as well. I have such nostalgia about it. It has a beautiful town gazebo and many weddings are photographed there. Of course I have the memories of walking to the library with my grandmother and checking out a stack of books each time. Who can forget the sweetness of a first boyfriend there and going to the icecream shoppe. I miss Ligonier and all it’s sweet memories!
Annie JC @JustCommonly says
I really like Scarsdale, NY for its quaint atmosphere and it’s still fairly close to the city.

I always enjoyed visiting Ephraim, Wisconsin in Door County during the summer when I was growing up. I went back last summer and had a great time seeing that many of my favorite places are still there. It was very peaceful, a great place to get away!

My favorite small town is Pella,Iowa. It has a special history .it was the home of Grant Wood and has a unique hotel and many flea markets.Love visiting it.

I love Hendersonville, North Carolina. The downtown is so fun, lots of eclectic shops and eateries; some old, some new, it’s a fun place to spend a day any time of the year.

Vermontville, Michigan; the Sweetest Place on Earth!!!! My hometown, will be celebrating with the Maple Syrup Festival this weekend. Our little village of 850 people swells to 30,000! Pancakes and church dinners, carnival rides, talent show, queen’s court and huge parade!!!Wish I still lived there.

My favorite small town is the one my husband grew up in, it`s
Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The only way on to Cape Breton Island is by a bridge (or plane). Glace Bay is on the south east side of the island and is surrounded by ocean on three sides. It is a typical small town on the ocean that has a lot of fishing boats(lobsters in season) and used to also have coal mines which have been shut down for many years. My father-in-law worked in the coal mine for years before coming to Toronto in the 80s. Full time work is hard to come by in this small town unless you want to work in a call center. We lived there on two separate occasions for a year each time. We loved the small town life but needed work more.
Toni Wilbarger says
My favorite small town is Elmore, Ohio, which is about ten minutes east of where I live. The Portage river runs along its western edge, and they have a small park there with a gazebo and benches where you can watch the water rush by. The small houses are quaint, painted with beautiful colors and with many sporting wrap-around front porches. The main street has lots of little shops and restaurants. To its south is Schedel Gardens, one of the most beautiful areas in northwest Ohio. All 17 acres are full of hills, waterfalls, artistic statues, a Japanese garden, ponds, a rose garden, and tons of other flowers. Just heavenly.
Perrianne Askew says
Mandevile, LA – because I would have been born there if they had a hospital there at the time (they do now).
Jennifer B says
Grand Rapids, Ohio is one of my favorite small towns. This quaint little town is set along the Maumee River along an old canal. You can walk on the old tow path (between the canal and the river) down to the Providence Dam to watch the water rush over the dam and fishermen trying to see what they can catch. Grand Rapids’ quaint downtown shops are fun to meander through no matter the weather. Come October, they have a historic “Apple Butter Festival” filled with historical reenactments along the canal’s tow path, firing of canons, huge copper kettles filled with cooking apples, etc. along with craft booths galore. If you’re a bit of a foodie, I would recommend reserving a table on the patio at LaRoe’s Restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious Reuben sandwich or their famous French onion soup while overlooking the river and canal. A fun place to visit time and time again.
BETHANY M BREWER says
My favorite small town is where I grew up in Boulder City Nevada where the Hoover Dam is located it was such an amazing place to live we walked everywhere to school, the store we only had one stop light that how small it was! I still go back and visit every few years and its changed a lot but I love that town!
Cindy Gomez says
My favorite small town is Ave Maria, Fl. This is definitely a family -centered community. The community is the most eastern region of Naples, FL. Small town feel with conservative values. We have the essentials: the local pub (where everyone hangs out), a dentist, doctor, physical therapist, grocery store, coffee shop, several parks and a university! What we don’t have: traffic lights, traffic, or noise (other than kids playing in the street). Love living here!
Pam Graber says
My favorite small town is Pettisville, OH. I grew up here, raised my children here and love it here. We have world-class chocolate in Stella Leona Chocolates, an amazing florist in Weeping Willow and some of the best meats and potato salad in Northwest Ohio at Pettisville Meats. While the school is small (abt. 500 students K-12) our academics are top-notch and our athletic teams are always competitive. I definitely recommend it as a place to live!
Susan Zollmann says
My favorite small town is Newton, KS because of all the good friends, churches & memories I have there. What fun to drive down Main St and enjoy all the quaint shops and new commerce as well. Newton is chock full of lovely old homes plus it has a Braum’s!
Connie Saunders says
My favorite small town is the one that I grew up in. Flemingsburg, KY isn’t perfect because employment opportunities are very limited and we have few places to shop for clothing but it is located within 25 miles of 3 different areas that offer shopping and multiple places to eat. What this town still offers are neighbors who care, a new library that offers ways to enrich our lives and doctors and a hospital to treat our physical ailments. We also have multiple churches to feed our spiritual needs. This town is perfect for me and I hope that I never have to leave!

I would choose Waynesboro, PA. It’s where my Father was born and I love historic places. We visited for two weeks every summer. Fond memories where it was ok to do scavenger hunts after dark with the neighborhood kids for four to six
square blocks. Can’t do that today!
Penny McGinnis says
My favorite small town is Gibsonburg, Ohio. It’s like stepping back in time when we visit. They have an amazing bakery on one corner and a local grocery on the other. Both have been run by family for several generations. Also, they have a beautiful park. It’s a wonderful place to relax.
Joan Arning says
We don’t consider it “real” small any more but I like my town of Farmington, Missouri. We are about 17,000. Compared to nearby St. Louis, we are small!
Nancy Griggs says
My favorite small town would be Irwin, PA where I spent the first twelve years of my life. It had a great play area that had something for everyone. It was a safe place to ride a bike. It was full of friendly people.
Vicky D says
My favorite small town is Marion, VA where my grandparents lived.
Deborah A. says
My favorite small town is Sugar City, ID, where I live. It is small (no stop light or store, but we have a gas station and post office!), but friendly. It’s a neighborhood town full of homes and schools. But we have a bigger city – including a Walmart and Applebee’s 🙂 – only 5 miles away. I’d say that’s the best of both worlds.
Becky Smith says
My favorite small town is where I grew up in Spencer, Iowa. It has about 11,233 people, according to the 2000 census. It also has the claim of the world’s largest county fair, and has about 315,000 people come for it in September. It’s basically flat, and one has to go out of town to find a hill to rider their bikes on. It had a fire in 1931, caused by fireworks, and the downtown had to be rebuilt.
Linda D. McFarland says
My favorite small town is Ozark, AR or really any small town in Arkansas. It’s my home state and would love to move back some day. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Hilda says
My favorite small town, oddly enough, I only lived in from birth to 16 months – Voorschoten, the Netherlands, where I was born. I’ve visited several times in the past 40 years, and it’s just an adorable town, and has a train station within walking distance from most of the town. It’s the epitome of the word “cute”!
Brenda W says
I don’t know which real place would be my favorite small-town.
I have been reading the many stories of the fictional town of Mule Hollow, TX and think it is a great place–except for the nosiness of the matchmakers sometimes is a little much. But they mean well and it turns out well for those involved. The people of the town are good people and help each other. And there are always laughs and spiritual insights.
Megan says
Show Low Arizona is my favorite small town. I love how its up in the woods, how the buildings are made giving it an old timey feel. Every time I’m there I can’t help but smile. It’s so peaceful.
Deborah Raney says
I am just loving reading about all your small-town favorites! And especially WHY they are your favorites! I must give a shout-out to Hesston, Kansas, where we raised our four kids. A lovely town with caring, friendly, genuine people who bend over backwards to help each other. After a tornado destroyed over 200 homes back in 1990, everyone worked together to rebuild, and now the town is prettier than ever. I’m a farmer’s daughter, a small-town girl, and now I live in the city, but my heart will always be a country-loving small-town girl! Keep them coming! You’re reminding us all what America is all about!
Bonnie Roof says
So many beautiful, quaint, small towns to love, but my fave has to be the one I live in – grew up in, and have spent the most time in: Mt. Washington, Ky.. Lots of wonderful history and wonderful stories here also. Congrats to you, Courtney, and Melissa – I’d love to read ‘Right Where We Belong’!!
Jennifer Bretsch says
My favorite small town is Plain Dealing, LA. It’s a tiny town outside of Bossier, LA. My dad grew up there and I have wonderful memories of visiting my grandma and other family there every summer and every other Christmas.
Emily McClure says
My favorite is definitely my hometown of Water Valley in South Western KY. We have one caution light and if you blink you miss us, but there at least 5 churches. 😀
Amy M. says
Although it may not be considered small anymore – Salina, KS is my favorite because that’s where I was born. I live in a large Tennessee city now, but Salina will always hold a special place in my heart.
Dianna Auton says
Fountain Inn, SC. It was where we used to live for 9 years. It’s an adorable little rail road town just south of Greenville, SC. We loved the history of the area and it was such a fun place to raise our family. We miss living there and think of it fondly. We also love the little coastal town of Georgetown, SC. Again full of history and such a quaint little town. It has not turned into the touristy type of area that Myrtle Beach has which I love that about it.
Krista Noorman says
I love my hometown of Hastings, Michigan! It’s got the sweetest little downtown with lots of great shops and restaurants, several parks, a nice walking path along the Thornapple River. We love living and raising our two kids here. 🙂
Brenda Ayers says
My favorite small town is Stuart, Va. I have lived here most of my life. It is at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the home of General JEB Stuart. You always see someone you know when you go to the grocery store or most any of the other little shops. It’s a friendly little town with some beautiful scenery.
Kathleen Bruner says
Sidney, NY – A quaint town in the foothills of the Catskill mountains in upstate New York is where I raised my two daughters. It was a wonderful place to raise children with a good Central School system, various church options, and a variety of community events. The Susquehanna River ran past our backyard and I could walk downtown from our home.
PamB says
My favorite small town: Grand Marais, MN. Even though it has been twelve years since we have been there it is still my favorite place to unwind at. The town has great coffee shops, homemade donuts that are fresh all day long. (It’s the only time I have a donut!) You can sit in a restaurant next with Lake Superior just feet away eating fresh fish and local maple syrup. Even though we live in CA now, I still order our maple syrup from that area. The lodge we stay at has a wonderful fireplace to relax by, scrumptious food, and you can listen to the waves of Lake Superior lap against the shore as you sleep. There are many interesting hikes and waterfalls to see. I think I am “homesick” for this area as I type this.
Laurel says
Cedarburg, WI. Set in a beautiful grassy area near Lake Michigan, it’s a picturesque downtown made of “Cream City bricks,” with a beautiful old church at the top of the street/hill. It was a town of 10,000 when I grew up there, so it was big enough to always meet new people, but it was small enough that we really did know half the town. I moved away 20 years ago and yet that’s still home to me.
Susan Wilson says
Clear spring, MD is my favorite small town because it was the home of my grandparents while I was growing up! My family would travel an hour and a half, one way, practically every weekend (it seemed) to visit with them and my 10 pairs of aunts and uncles. We also had our very large family reunions there, complete with homemade ice cream 🍦💞
Kay Garrett says
My favorite little town is Mountain View, AR located in the Ozark Mountains. It’s a town right out of the past where folks have values and hold on to the old ways of friendship and pride in their town. They take the time to say hello to a stranger in town and want to make your stay there so pleasant that you can’t wait to come back. They ensure that the youth have the opportunity to explore the arts and encourage them by even furnishing free instruments and lessons to all that want them. It’s one of the few towns now days where you can leave your car or home unlocked and not have to worry about it.
We have loved Mountain View and traveled there for years. Now in our retirement years, we are blessed to be building our dream home in our dream location. Soon we will be able to call our favorite small town OUR HOME TOWN!
Andrea says
I LOVE Landrum, South Carolina . . . mostly because of The Red Horse Inn. My husband and I spent our first and third anniversaries there (we’ve been married almost 17 years, so I think we’re looong overdue for another trip . . . but we have kids now, so the beach is a bit more family-friendly!) But the town of Landrum is breath-taking, especially in the fall, and the scenery will lower your blood pressure! =)
Sydney says
My favorite small town is my home town. It was just a beautiful, wonderful, and safe place to grow up, if a bit sheltered from a lot of the outside world. I loved it! And still love going home to visit!!
Wendy Marple says
Delano, MN because I grew up there and loved small town living.
Krystina Rankin says
My favorite small town is Kenton, OK. The population is like 15 but it’s right on the Black Mesa so there are lots of people that come through. There are a lot of cool historical places to visit plus it’s where my grandfather grew up and I love seeing where his family homesteaded.
Deborah Raney says
Krystina, my husband has been to Kenton and the Black Mesa twice this past year on “dino digs.” He just loves it there and wants me to come with him next time!
Krystina Rankin says
You should totally go with him! The Dino tracks are very cool! I have family that owns the Black Mesa B&B. It’s a great place to stay out there. Very peaceful, a great place for writing!
Charis Zdrojewski says
Ulysses, PA is a great small town (It’s where I live!).
Connie says
My favorite small town is Dixon, MO. This is my parent’s home town and I have many memories of going back to visit and having big Sunday dinners with all the aunts, uncles and cousins. It was always so much fun. Now my parents have moved back, and I love being able to go back and see them. The town is tiny, but the churches are great and the people treat you like family.
Deborah Raney says
Connie, I’m not sure I’ve ever told anyone this, but Dixon, MO was my “prototype” for my Hanover Falls novels. (Both the Hanover Falls series and my standalone novel Nearly are set in Hanover Falls. I always like to have a real town to sort of pattern my fictional one after, and Dixon was it. Though I’ve never visited there, the people at the chamber of commerce office were so helpful when I was working on the first book (almost 20 years ago now!)
Kristys says
My favorite small town is Winterset, Iowa. Besides being the birth place of John Wayne and the site for the filming of “The Bridges of Madison County” it is the place were my grandparents and great parents lived. Visiting is like being in a time warp, very slow paced and quiet, no one feeling pressure of the city life. Rolling hills of green as you exit the town from any direction, a town square with the Madison County Court house and LOTS of Victorian homes, a place to walk and relax!
Deborah Raney says
Kristys, I’m actually working on a novel set in Winterset, Iowa! We used to visit there when our son lived in Iowa, just because it’s such a charming town! Now I need to go back to do some final research for this book!
Brittany Keating says
My favorite small town is the one I grew up in…Marion, North Carolina. It’s in the western part of the state in and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. There’s no specific reason why it’s my favorite, except for the fact that now that I live in a city several hours away, I appreciate small town living and how good it made my childhood. The nearby mountains don’t hurt either!!
Annette says
My favorite small town is Walnut Grove from Little House on the Prairie, because I loved watching the series and the people.
Melissa M. says
Yes, me too.
Marina says
My favorite small town will have to be the town I live and grew up in-the beautiful tricities! I love the sunsets here and there is not much traffic, although we are expanding! It’s the love of family and friends which is what I call home.
Meredith says
My favorite small town is the fictional Mayberry, North Carolina. Why? Because that’s where Sheriff Andy Taylor and his Aunt Bea live.
Patty says
I grew up in a small town, Perry, MI. Population somewhere around 2000. You were just as likely to see a tractor driving down main street as you were a police car!
Terrill Rosado says
I grew up in a small town in the foothills of Mount Rainier. As much as I cherished my childhood, by the time I graduated high school and moved away to college, I was ready to be rid of small town life. After graduating college, getting married and traveling a bit, we settled in a small town not much unlike what I grew up in. Coming full circle, I feel so blessed settling roots in Lynden, WA where the irony hasn’t escaped me. My kids were grade school age when we moved back to WA and I loved that they could freely run around the neighborhood, in and out of neighbors yards and homes, without fear or the careful play date planning needed in larger communities.
Lynden was founded by Dutch Reformed settlers and has (at one time) held the record for the highest number of churches per capita. Most businesses are closed on Sundays and not a bar or tavern within city limits. Not surprising, It is a distinctly conservative town – think Footloose, but less strict and less rural. Haha! They’ve only abolished the “No alcohol sales on Sunday” law within the 10 years we’ve lived here. I may not conform to all that this town professes, but I enjoy the strong sense of community and it is truly our home.
Gail Hollingsworth says
My favorite small town is where my husband grew up, Gordo, Alabama. It’s about 30 miles from Tuscaloosa, where we live. They boast of one red light, obtained only a few years ago. When my high school was torn down I claimed Gordo High as mine and went to all their football games with my husband. They have a yearly celebration called the Mule Day/Chicken Fest. Parades, crafts, music, Mayberry Tribute Artists, and great southern food.
Kathy Eger says
Best small town Waupaca WI. Everyone friendly and in the summer when tourists come, church is come as you are. A chain of lakes is nearby for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Tourists are welcome in swimsuits, shorts and T-shirts.
Winnie Thomas says
My favorite small town is the town in northern Utah where I live. It’s just the right size and is surrounded by mountains. It’s gorgeous now with everything starting to green up. Another small town I love is Wilderswil, Switzerland where my grandfather grew up. It’s near Interlaken in the middle of the Alps by the Jungfrau. It’s beautiful there.

listening to the music of the waves, a cool downtown for fun festivals etc and
special people.

Jen says
My favorite small town is Kersey, CO. We lived there for 30 + years and loved the folks and family businesses there. The school offered an excellent education to the residents of the Kersey School district and the kids were great.
Stephanie H. says
Since I have always been a city gal, I would pick Walnut Grove in Minnesota as my favorite small town. I would have loved to live in this small town along with the Ingalls family and their friends/neighbors.
carylkane says
I grew up near the Texas Gulf Coast in a town of about 600 hundred people. My favorite small town is Hope Valley. The scenery is gorgeous.
Gay Martin says
I was born and raised in Oquawka, IL (pop. just over 1500)on the Mississippi. My husband and I raised our family here and even though they all moved away, we are still here, and have lived in the same house we built shortly after we married in 1960. This is ‘home’ and even though the town has changed somewhat, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!
Pam K. says
My favorite small town is my hometown of Lindsborg, Kansas. It’s small, around 3,000 people, but we have many events that make our town special. We are known as “Little Sweden, USA” since it was settled by Swedes. Every two years in October we celebrate with Svensk Hyllingsfest and Midsummer’s Festival is every June. There are several art galleries and many musical events, including The Messiah Festival each Easter at Bethany College. Music is valued in our schools, with strings offered beginning in fourth grade and band in fifth. Our high school students in band and orchestra regularly do well at state competitions. We have many small, unique shops. Our Broadway RFD is the longest running outdoor theater in Kansas, with a production each July. I could go on but I think I’m out of space! Lindsborg is a great place to live.
Deborah Raney says
As you know, Pam, a bed-and-breakfast writing getaway in Lindsborg inspired my Clayburn Novels series. It is everything you say and more! Great little Kansas town!
Dee says
My favorite small town is the small town that I grew up in. It is located in Western NY in Chautauqua County. Family, friends and former classmates still live there and when I go back to visit, it’s great to see not a lot has changed over the years. It is still the same quiet little town.
Courtney Grice says
My favorite small town is Fitzgerald, Ga. It is my family’s current residence and where my husband grew up. I like the uniqueness of the town’s set-up and the history behind it. The most interesting part is seeing wild chickens roaming all over town.
Ola Norman says
My favorite place is where I live in Traphill North Carolina!
Jan H says
My favorite small town is Blackwell TX. It is such a wonderful caring community. Whenever their is a need the people gather and help. The local fire department is volunteer and so is the ambulance service. They take donations and have fund raisers but do not charge for their services. We have a methodist and a baptist church. We get together for things like funerals and we alternate services at Thanksgiving. Our preacher will preach at the methodist church and they provide dinner and the next year their preacher will preach at our church and we provide dinner. When it is time for Vacation Bible School we have people from both churches volunteering.
Esther Barragan says
My favorite smalltown is Milton, Florida because it’s where I grew up!!!
Una Ireland says
My favorite small towns are Stephen, MN and Drayton, ND. Stephen is where I went to school and where my mother is living now. Drayton is the town where I was born. It’s also where Lauraine Snelling writes about in her Red River books about the town of Blessing. The town museum used to be the country church I grew up in and where I was married.
Andrea Stephens says
My favorite fictional small town would be Maple Valley. I love how the people look out for and help each other. I grew up near several small towns in southern Indiana that felt very much the same way. My own hometown of Bloomington, Indiana used to have a small town feel, mostly in the summer when the students were gone. Now, I go back to visit and don’t even recognize most of the town. It has grown so much. IU has taken over more space. There are people everywhere!
Diana Guz says
I don’t have any real-life favorite small towns. Only in books!! But I do like visiting Eden Hill in Bill Higg’s novel. These stories sound wonderful, thank you for the giveaway!
Anita Christian says
Hesston, KS. It’s my favorite small town because I grew up there. (My parents still live there. Deb, you’ve lived there.) I could list good things about the town – and perhaps some not-so-good things – but the bottom line is: it’s my favorite small town because it’s MY hometown.
Crystal says
Fav small town is Blumenfeld where I grew up.
Vivian Furbay says
My favorite small town is Jordan, MT where my Dad grew up and got to spend a lot of time there in the summer as a kid playing with my cousins, new kittens, and riding horses at my grandparents ranch. If I win the book, it would have to be a print copy.
Cathy says
My favorite small town is Fredericksburg, TX, which was/is a well preserved historic German settlement, mid-1800’s, in the Hill Country area of central TX. It also has the National Museum of the Pacific War, in honor of favorite son, Admiral Nimitz, as well as beautiful wildflowers and rocky hills.

Bowmanville Ontario Canada because I grew up there until I moved to the USA. Lots of memories in my growing up years. I still have relatives living up there in that town. A former television series on Hallmark called Wind at My Back was filmed in Bowmanville Ontario. I really get to go back there but I will always have my memories.

My favorite is the fictional town of Mitford in Jan Karon’s books. I almost feel like I’ve actually been there!
