I love to read books but I also love listening to them, and I always have at least 3-4 books I’m listening to at once.
Customarily, it’s three or four non-fiction books and at least one or two novels, which is the case at the moment. The following are books I’ve either recently finished or am currently listening to.
First, non-fiction…
The Making of Biblical Woman by Beth Allison Barr
This book came highly recommended, and I quickly realized why. The author presents both well-known and little-known church history with detailed accuracy substantiated by research documents, numerous well-documented incidents, and extensive Biblical text. I ended up purchasing the book in print too because it’s a scholarly read, and I often go back and reread what I’ve listened to. If you’re at all interested in studying complementarianism versus egalitarianism, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. And Aimee Byrd is right, “Read this book and be challenged and encouraged.”
The Unseen Realm by Michael Heiser
I was sad to hear that Michael Heiser died very recently from a longterm illness—even as I rejoice for him and that he’s Home! If you or someone you know are interested in learning more about the supernatural worldview of the Bible, this is the book!
Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes by Kenneth E. Bailey
This is my second time through this book. It’s that good. You will never look at Jesus the same way again. The middle eastern lens changes everything!
My non-fiction list goes on forever. So much I want to learn about, to study. So much I want to better understand. Foremost about God’s Word, his nature and character. Then about history and also the world to come.
And now, fiction . . .
Count the Nights by Stars by Michelle Shocklee
I read a print copy of this for endorsement but…don’t care. I enjoyed it so much I wanted to listen to it, too. I highly recommend this dual timeline story by my buddy Michelle that’s set right here in Nashville!
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (an oldie but a goodie!)
BEST AUDIO BOOK EVER!
I always keep The Help close at hand in my library just for creative inspiration. I’ve listened to it countless times. I don’t care if you’ve seen the movie and read the print book, the audio book is pure listening pleasure and not to be missed.
So are you an audio book lover? If yes, tell me the books you’re listening to. My to-be-listened-to stack is long but can always be longer. ; )
Much love from Nashville,
Tammy

I’m definitely a “listener.” I am on the go too much to read the traditional way. Audiobooks have allowed me to work, drive, and read. I love them. I recently finished listening to Tony Evans’ Names of God, which was eye-opening. Learning about God’s various characteristics through His names has changed my prayers. I’m also listening to Elizabeth Goddard’s Cold Light of Day, a romantic suspense set in Alaska. I usually have an audiobook or two and a Kindle book I’m reading at the same time. Thanks for the book suggestions!

Thank you, Rebecca, for the suggestions! I’ve added both. I’m intrigued by what you said about Tony’s book so will start listening to his very soon. And…
Little known trivia—
Beth and I were in the same writing critique group back in the early 2000s in the group American Christian Fiction Writers. Except it was American Christian Romance Writers back in the day. So Beth and I critiqued each other’s work for many years.
I’m still so grateful for that crit group, and for what they taught me. So, enjoy Beth’s book! She’s a fabulous writer. 😉

Hi Tamera. I recently listened to Count the Night by Stars and it went straight to my favorites list! Such a great book. I’m about 80% through A Hundred Crickets Singing by Cathy Gohlke, another excellent Civil War split time novel.
I’ve never heard of the filament Bible. I’m intrigued! I’ll definitely have to look into it. I could use a new Bible since mine is taped all over and the print is quite small.
Thanks for the video. What a hoot! I sent it to my husband. LOL
Have a wonderful day!

Love that we both enjoyed Count the Night by Stars so much, and thanks for the recommendation on Cathy’s book. Love her too.
You will really appreciate the Filament Bible, Deena! And the FREE app is so extremely helpful and information. And handy!
Wasn’t that video a hoot! I’m still smiling. Hugs to you!

Tammy, you know I’m a listener. Currently listening to: Just Between You and Me by Jenny B. Jones. Am reading through the Bible this year and am listening to the NASB2020 version on audio as I read in print. Just finished (for book club) The Messy Life of Book People by Phaedra Patrick. And before it The Cairo Curse by Pepper Basham (sequel to The Mistletoe Countess). Am also listening to Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes, but I’m doing it in small bites. I have the Filament Bible (NLT) and enjoy using it.

Love knowing all this (and the fact that we’re reading through the Bible together this year, such a blessing). AND that we’re going to Israel together this fall. Cannot wait to walk the Land with you, friend.

I’m not on the audiobook bandwagon yet. Years ago I tried listening to a book and my mind wandered and I couldn’t follow the story. But I know things have changed and I need to try again. And that video! Oh. My. Goodness. That was awesome!
Tamera Alexander says
LOL, so glad that video brought you JOY like it did me. So funny. And please girl, try audiobooks again. I get SO much more reading done this way. Hugs!

Hi Tammy,
I’m currently listening to “What I Would Tell You” by Liz Tolsma and before that listened to “Becoming Mrs. Lewis” by Patti Callahan. The voices in the latter were perfect for the characters. Next I’ll listen to “Potiphar’s Wife” by Mesu Andrews. I, too, always have an audiobook going while reading a novel and a nonfiction book or two. I love learning and as I get older, I need to learn things over and over again!

LOL on learning things over and over again, Marilyn. SO get that, friend. Thanks for the recommendations!
