Authors on Autumn

September 28, 2021 By Julie Klassen

Welcome, autumn! Red maples, crunchy leaves underfoot, crisp air and crisp apples, and a return to routine. To usher in the new season, I thought I’d share what 10 classic authors (including some of my favorites) have written about autumn. Some quotes you probably know, while a few may be less familiar. If I’ve missed your favorite, please add it in the comments below.

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

―F. Scott Fitzgerald

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

―L. M. Montgomery

“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”

― George Eliot

“It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!”

—A. A. Milne

“Wild is the music of autumnal winds amongst the faded woods.”

—William Wordsworth

“Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.”

― Samuel Butler

“Go, sit upon the lofty hill,

And turn your eyes around,

Where waving woods and waters wild

Do hymn an autumn sound.”

—Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I hope you are enjoying these mellow, golden days as well. Thank you for stopping by today!

I loved all the quotes and images, Julie! I feel a little like George Eliot’s bird, flying “about the earth seeking the successive autumns” as Ken and I have traveled from autumn to autumn farther north, and soon we’ll be going home to Missouri just in time for the real beginning of our autumn there. I can’t think of a better season to repeat again and again!

I agree, Deborah. And I’ve been enjoying your photos on Instagram!

I loved your quotes. We’re having warm days and cool nights here as fall begins. I wish fall would last longer.

Here, too, Lynn. I’m guessing you’re taking lots of bike rides while you can!

How fun! In Texas we don’t get the full effect of the fall colors, but a few years ago my husband and I visited the botanical garden in Fort Worth in early fall and the Japanese garden area was stunning! All the red and golds and yellows and greens. I’ve been in love with fall ever since.

I love the A.A. Milne quote you mentioned. It makes me smile and remember the simple joys of childhood.

Thanks, Karen. And the botanical garden sounds lovely.

Autumn is my favorite season and so it was especially lovely to read these poetic words. 🙂

Thanks, Becky. My favorite was spring, but autumn has been capturing my heart over the last few years.

Thanks for sharing this lovely selection of quotes about fall! 🙂
The “Washington Post” Travel section featured the best places to see fall foliage in the greater metro Baltimore/DC region a few weeks ago.
When I attended library/grad school in Clarion, PA, a small town in western PA, the annual Autumn Leaf Festival (ALF) was the big regional event for this time of the year. It’s held in early October.

Oh, I love and appreciate all these quotes. Our northern IL trees will be simply gorgeous in a few weeks! But does it all have to come with shorter days? 🙁

Beautiful quotes, Julie! thanks for sharing! I so love autumn, too. Up here in northern Alberta, Canada, after having a couple weeks of desperately needed rain, we are now enjoying an extended season, it seems, of the gorgeous golden leaves–the moisture seems to have helped them hang on a little longer! Looking down into our shining valley of forests and fields and beyond them the hills, I want to echo what the English poet George Meredith said in his famous poem The Lark Ascending…
“And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup…”

It is simply beautiful how God has made the Year to age so gracefully.

We hold our breath for autumn to last longer, Julie. Your choice of quotes brought sheer delight. Loved them, each one.
