Autumn Leaves

October 11, 2022 By Julie Klassen

Hello friends. I hope you are enjoying October so far. I’ve been head-down busy writing lately but I am taking daily walks to enjoy the beautifully colorful foliage here in the northern US.

Some trees on my walking route.

The leaves are so pretty that I brought some home with me.

Who wore it better? 🙂

While I walk, I love to listen to audiobooks. I’m currently listening to a book by debut novelist Sara Brunsvold called The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip and really enjoying it. I thought I’d share a quote from it about leaves:

A leaf is a silent proverb. Only when it reaches the end of its time on the tree does its brilliance come through. Sometimes yellow, sometimes orange, sometimes deep red…. A leaf has the most extraordinary death. There is so much beauty to it.”

—The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip (Clara Kip to Aidyn) by Sara Brunsvold

And here’s one more leaf quote that cracked me up:

It is not everyone who has your passion for dead leaves.”

― Sense and Sensibility (Elinor Dashwood to Marianne) by Jane Austen
“Crunchy Leaves” candle and October calendar photo (taken by my friend, Suzy).

Have the leaves turned where you live? What’s your favorite thing about October?

Beautiful pictures! I love the quote from the book you are reading. It gives an interesting and heartening perception about the stages of life.

Here in southeast Virginia, we are still waiting for this magical change. I love the colors of the leaves, and it was when I was teaching science that I discovered that the redness of leaves indicates how much sugar is in the plant. After a brief temperature drop, we are now enjoying a wonderful Indian summer. I also love the smells of autumn.

Hi Betty. Enjoy your lingering summer! Our temps have ranged from 30 to 80 over the last few weeks. Interesting time of year. 🙂

Like Betty, out here in Eastern Washington it’s still behaving like late Summer instead of Fall. I love the Fall colors but they’re not as abundant as usual. I’ll just enjoy those wonderful photos you posted, instead! Thanks for sharing!

🙂 Hello Julie, I loved looking at your trees! That is one thing I miss when I moved down south to Myrtle Beach! The trees kind of stay green then the leaves fall. You have to drive at least up to North Carolina to see any changes.

I love the leaves changing colors. My favorite part of October is working at the local pumpkin farm. I don’t have to do it, but I love it. I am a cashier on the weekends in the admissions booth. There are so many things to do there and it is fun just getting out in my favorite weather. 🙂

I also love my Yogi Pumpkin Spice Tea that I recently discovered on Amazon. 🙂 Oh my word—yummy! Here it is in case you want to order it. 🙂 https://a.co/d/hrKpU8t

    🙂 Mary

Working at a pumpkin farm sounds like fun, Mary. What a great way to enjoy autumn! And thanks for the tea recommendation. I will check it out.

I bought The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip audiobook when Audible was having their great sale last month. Not sure how it ended up on my radar, but now that I read that excerpt about leaves, it is going to move up on my TBR list. Thanks!!

Well, I somehow missed that sale, but thankfully the audiobook has been worth every penny so far! I’ve laughed out loud several times. I think you’ll enjoy it, Robin.

Julie, I’m like you in that I love the changing colors of the leaves. They are just starting to turn down here in Tennessee. But the mountain ridge to the side of my house will be displayed in brilliant color soon.

Wow, Becky. I can’t imagine how beautiful the colors of a Tennessee mountain ridge must be! Enjoy and share photos!

I share Elinor’s opinion. The trees here in northern IL are giant clods of mold. My allergies have been dreadful this fall.

The leaves are a’changed here in Colorado. Unlike the midwest we seem to have fewer color variations. Our golds are vivid but we have fewer reds. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Beautiful photos! In the south we have plenty of fall colors, but the best thing is the cooler temps.

Ken and I are traveling in Missouri and we’ve watched the leaves turn before our eyes. I LOVE fall and your photos are definitely eye-candy! You make me want to collect some leaves to bring into my house!

Hi Julie! I’m glad you are enjoying my October calendar picture. Your blog has given me the idea to work on a tree version. I’m not sure I have enough tree photos for 2023, but it’ll be fun to work towards one for 2024! Call truly is a beautiful time of year!
