One of the things I love about being a grandmother is reading books to my granddaughter. Lyla is sixteen months old and already has her favorites. One of them, “Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumbs” by Al Perkins and Eric Gurney, used to be one of her mother’s favorites, too. I never liked this book when my daughter was young because it didn’t have a plot. My daughter now understands why I got tired of … [Read more...]

How a Book is Born (and a giveaway)!
It's my pleasure to welcome author Catherine West back to Inspired by Life and Fiction! I'm endlessly fascinated by the inspiration God uses to guide each author to the story He has for her to tell. Today, Catherine's going to share with us how He inspired her new release. Stay tuned at the end of this post for a giveaway of chocolate, tea, and a book (a winning combination)! … [Read more...]
What’s it like to write collaboratively?
Tricia Goyer and I are co-authors in a new Guidepost cozy mystery series. We're both head down writing our first book in the series, and it's a fun time of exploration. When you write on a Guidepost series, it's a little different from writing a book for yourself. I thought today I'd take you behind the scenes and show you how these books come to life. [Tweet "Curious about writing … [Read more...]
New Release and a Cover Reveal
I'm delighted to tell you that my new book, You'll Think of Me, is now available. Early reviews have been such an encouragement. Here are just a few: Publishers Weekly: "These characters, and the reader, are in for a heartwarming journey of redemption, forgiveness, and embracing the future.” RT Book Reviews: “This story, infused with the wonder of God’s love, will have inspirational romance … [Read more...]
Powerful Movie, Nostalgic Props
I saw the new movie The Case for Christ on Sunday with my husband and teenage son. It was excellent and I recommend it. The writing was solid and realistic—kudos to Brian Bird. The acting was impressive, especially from the leads. And the production values and especially the cinematography exceeded my expectations. My son acknowledged that it was better than the other Christian movies we've … [Read more...]
Almost a Member of the Family
I painted our coffee table last weekend and as I stroked a brand new, beautiful shade of dusty aqua onto the old nicked, scarred white paint, I couldn't help but think of all the memories that little ten-dollar table held. When I bought this curvy table at Goodwill twelve years ago, we had just bought our first home. The table was two tones of cheap wood, desperately in need of refinishing, but … [Read more...]

Why Are Novellas So Popular? (Plus a FREE Novella!)
A novella is simply a short novel, usually about a quarter or third of the size of a full-length book. It contains all the same elements as a novel: well-drawn characters, interesting plot, love interest (for romances), and internal character growth. But the story is much less complicated and moves fairly quickly. As publishing and books have entered the digital age, novellas have increased in … [Read more...]
Movies With A Surprise Spiritual Impact
I love a good movie. I'm too cheap to pay full price to see them in theaters most of the time (especially with 3 kids), but I pile new releases up in my Netflix queue as fast as the trailers release. And while it is easy to get discouraged by the increase in language, crudity, violence, and skin in movies today, that dark background makes the good ones shine all the brighter. Christian film … [Read more...]
