Celebrating Baby Leo!

October 4, 2022 By Tamera Alexander

People keep telling me I have no idea how wonderful it’s going to be to become a grandmother. And while I think I have a fairly good imagination, I know they’re right! Because when I was pregnant with our first child, I had no idea how deep and wide and all encompassing my love for my children would be.

Kurt, Kellie, Kelsey, me and Joe at the baby shower

This past weekend we had a baby shower for our son Kurt & daughter-in-law Kellie—and precious Baby Leo Joseph Alexander, whose expected arrival is December 16th. We were all excited beforehand, but seeing all the cute onesies and sleep sacks and toys and books and gowns, well… That made it even more real!

Here are a few pics from the party . . .

Kellie with her hostesses (L to R: Kellie’s mom Leslie , Kellie’s twin sister Kristen, our daughter Kelsey, me, and my dear friend Kim who hosted at her lovely home)

I had my first experience making a balloon arch—and it may be my last. LOL! Those things are time-consuming. And Leslie had already blown up most of the balloons!

Look at the adorable dessert table Kim created for the Wild Adventure/Jungle theme. Can you see the monkey on the side “climbing” the balloon tree? And notice the crocodile Daddy, Mommy and Baby cupcakes . . .

Croc up close . . .

Kellie’s only request for the shower was Dirt Cake with Gummy Worms. She loves it! And I’d forgotten how good it is—minus the worms for me. While I love Gummy Bears and DOTS candy, I’m not a gummy worm fan, for some reason. Are you?

Finally, we had pictures from Kellie and Kurt’s recent BabyMoon to Athens and Rome streaming on the TV. Honestly? I’d never heard of a BabyMoon until K2 (how we refer to Kurt and Kellie on our family text thread <g>) told us about it. They had a fabulous time and raved about the food!

Three more pics from the BabyMoon . . .

Finally, one of Kellie’s last Facebook posts about their trip (so grateful she’s our daughter now)—

Incidentally, my sweet friend Kim also hosted Kurt and Kellie’s wedding shower back in October 2020. Here’s a pic we snapped from that day . . .

Just for fun we attempted to recreate that picture after the baby shower this Saturday. Um, we didn’t quite make it! : } #understatement

QUESTION for you grandmothers—and young mothers—out there:

What’s one of the best baby gifts you received when your first child was born? Maybe something you found really useful or that made a certain task easier. Or something you would never have bought for yourself but now you love it and can’t imagine life without it! ; )

Thanks for sharing this journey with me and my family!

Grateful in Nashville,

Soon-to-be Gram Tam

SO excited for you and your family! That whole Wild Things theme would make a darling nursery! Can’t wait for you to hold precious Leo in your arms, dear Gram Tam!

Thanks for celebrating with us! And for sharing all your grandmotherly wit, wisdom, and experience with me, Deb. Keep it coming. 😉 I’m still rejoicing with you over Tarl and Michelle’s wedding this past weekend. The vastness and generosity of God’s love never fails to astound, does it?

God is so good. My heart almost can’t hold it all. Yes, he’s good even in the hard times, but how grateful we are for the blessings He’s seen fit to give us.

Forty-seven years ago when my twins were born, a friend gave us diaper service for six weeks (pre Pampers days). It was wonderful! Recently my granddaughter received a disposable tiered diaper “cake” with small sizes going to larger sizes. She said she won’t have to buy diapers for a long time. Changes times. Some things are for the better!

What a gift that was! Thoughtful AND so useful! And aren’t we grateful for disposables these days? Thanks for sharing, Harriet! And twins! I didn’t realize you had twins. How cool.

I’m so excited for you, grandma Tammy! Grandbabies are the best! My newest one is 4 months old and super cuddly. Have you decided what Leo will call you?

    • Tamera Alexander says

      October 4, 2022 at 11:30 am

Four months old! What a sweet age. The kids have already chosen Gram Tam (and Papa Joe for Joe). We’ll see what Leo ends up calling us. ?? 🙂

I don’t like gummy worms either! People think it’s weird I’ll eat other gummy items but not worms. I honestly think the flavor and texture is just “off”. That’s the only explanation I have.

      October 4, 2022 at 11:31 am

Agree all around, Rebecca! And of course, we’re right! 😉

Huge congrats, Gram Tam. You will, indeed, love being a grandmother to little Leo. It’s been too many years for me to remember what I received at my baby showers, but my grandson, Vince, became a dad earlier this year and the shower was so fun. Vince is a huge hunter, and the baby shower for his son, Carter, had tons of red and black plaid and camouflage gifts. Camo onsies are just too cute.

      October 4, 2022 at 11:33 am

Thanks, Robin! Love those camo onesies! And you’re a GREAT grandmother now. You’ve got us all beat! ; )

Congratulations! What a joyful celebration and wonderful theme! Love the crocodile cupcakes. I’ll have to agree with Harriet above – diaper service was amazing for my first, 56 years ago!

There’s nothing like being a grandmother – you will definitely feel that joy. Praying for a safe delivery.

Thanks, Betty. We’re excited and are ready for little Leo to get here. In God’s perfect timing.

You will love being a grandmother! What a fun shower. And yes, baby moons. I guess our generation missed out on that idea. 🙂

Yes, we did, D’Ann! LOL Thanks for sharing.

What a sweet post! Thank you for sharing with your readers. The best item we got was a bouncing/rocking baby chair. It helped our babies sleep. 🙂

Thanks, Katherine. Oh I loved the bouncing/rocking baby chair. That thing was worth its weight in gold!

What a sweet baby shower! So happy for all of you 💚🐵🦁🌿

One of my favorite things I received that I used so much & never would have thought of was a “Happy Baby “ food grinder. Such a simple little item but allows you to make baby food out of what you’re eating and always seemed healthier than baby food.

    • Tamera Alexander says

      October 4, 2022 at 11:37 am

A Happy Baby food grinder! WHAT a great idea! I’m on it! 😉 Great to hear from you. Would love to see you and Mark again. If ever we’re in your neck of the Colorado woods, we’ll reach out.

Congratulations to the Alexander family! God bless!
I confess I have never heard of Baby Moon. Looks like a great tradition.

Thanks, Jen! You and me both on the Babymoon. But Kurt and Kellie had a fabulous time! She hired a professional photographer for a 90 minute shoot, I think it was, and they captured some wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing!

Assuming they babymooned on their own, I wondered how they got such awesome pics of themselves. A pro photographer in country was a great idea! Congratulations Gram Tam and all!

Hey Soon-to-be-Gram Tam (love that), and the pics from the shower were lovely. I can’t get over the alligator cupcakes! Fantastic! Now I’m not a “young” mom or grandmother but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night? Does that count? I loved these plastic links that could attach to a toy and then dangle from the car seat, stroller, or high chair so baby’s toy was always in reach. My nieces both had a little device they put in the crib or swing that made white noise or played a lullaby. That was pretty clever. Blessings on Kellie’s delivery and sweet Leo’s birth!

      October 4, 2022 at 2:14 pm

LOL, Kelly! So funny. And yes on those links and the lullabies. Kellie and Kurt got a couple of “Shushers” and that was something new to me. Back in the ol’ days we all just shushed our own kids to sleep. Apparently now there’s a device for that. : )

What fun–and I LOVE The balloon arch (admire you for even attempting it!). You are going to love being a grandma, and baby Leo will be blessed to have you in his life. Congratulations!
