If you love listening to audiobooks then today’s post is for you!
I’m giving away FIVE audiobooks of Colors of Truth, a Carnton novel.
The fabulous Kate Rudd narrated this book and she does a marvelous job. She has such a great voice and doesn’t do weird intonations when she reads the male characters, which some narrators do. A pet peeve of mine. : }
How to enter to win 1 of 5 AUDIOBOOKS?
Simply leave a comment on this post telling me one (or more) of the following:
- What you love best about audiobooks.
Me? Driving and reading a book and drinking coffee all at the same time. - What your pet peeve about audiobooks is—if you have one.
I already shared about female narrators dropping to unnatural octaves when they read male characters. That needs to stop. Immediately. #CeaseAndDesist - What’s the last audiobook you listened to and really enjoyed?
I’m listening to Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art by Madeleine L’Engle and am loving it. A dear writer BJ Hoff passed away last week, and I went to her website last weekend just to “spend a little time” with her again. She was so helpful to me early on in my writing journey. I ran across her curated list of recommended reading for writers (so good—check it out here). How did I ever miss this one by Madeleine L’Engle? It’s a jewel. Just like BJ Hoff.

BY 8PM CENTRAL TODAY **
Winners announced no later than 9PM Central tonight on this blog post
Lastly, I’ve got a fun—and very useful—giveaway this month on my website. It’s something I use every day, sometimes multiple times a day.
What is it, you ask? A LED Neck Reading Light. It hangs around your neck and has three light settings. The light is so pure and clear, and the little “arms” are bendable so you can focus the light wherever you need it. Voila!
That’s all from me today. I’m still writing toward THE END on another book and continue to enjoy this contemporary setting (that’s also historical—surprise, surprise). This one will be out next spring, Lord willing, from Focus on the Family.
Love you guys, oh! and an early Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in our midst. My crew went out last night to celebrate early since this Sunday finds us scattered in different directions. Oh how I adore these people. I cannot begin to imagine life without them. It’s Joe, me, Kelsey, Kurt & Kellie (our newest daughter who we’re absolutely over the moon about)!
If you’re missing your precious mom like I am mine this week, know that you’re not alone. I’ve asked the Holy Spirit to bring to mind memories that have drifted further out and to remind me of fun times she and I shared. He’s already doing that, and I’m so grateful.
Here are a couple of pics of Mom and me. One from my wedding day (December 15, 1984)—do NOT even start with me about the Princess Diana wedding dress! LOL on those poufy sleeves.
And the picture above is the last pic Mom and I had taken of the two of us shortly before she went Home in August 2009. #LastingTreasures
Love from Nashville, friends,
Tamera

I love audiobooks!! They allow me the opportunity to enjoy books while working around the house as well as driving. I get to enjoy so many more books than I would otherwise 🙂
Kailey Bechtel says
I love audiobooks! I listen to them when I’m cleaning and doing work around the house.
I recently listened to Brand of Light by Ronie Kendig. Her narrator did such an excellent job! I highly recommend it!
Brandi says
I love audiobooks while driving, cleaning or cooking. I especially love them while hiking. My pet peeve is when male narrators try to capture too many ranges for women.
Julie Waldvogel says
I definitely like the ability to listen to audiobooks and drive at the same time!
Cheryl Hart says
I love reading/listening to audiobooks because I can do it at the same time as other things – such a s cleaning house or driving.
Rachael de Klerk says
I love audiobooks, although I haven’t listened to a whole lot. I love being able to enjoy a story when my eyes are tired, but my brain isn’t. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks while doing math homework! Last year, the Librivox version (read by Katherine) of Northanger Abbey got me though exams.
Rachael de Klerk says
Oh! And my pet peeve is when the narrator sounds too robotic. It makes it really hard to get into the story.
Becky D. says
I have not yet jumped on to the audiobook bandwagon. I love listening to storytellers & hearing their version of the story (such as Adventures in Odyssey 😍). Maybe it’s the dread that they may sound like my 6th grade science teacher…all monotone, no excitement. Your lovely novel would be the perfect start to fun listening travels! 🥰📚🎙
Melissa Andres says
Oh I love audiobooks! I almost always have one in listening to. My favorite thing about them is I can get all my housework done while reading a book! I don’t really have a pet peeve I can think of. And the last audiobook I read I finished last night, it was Into the Deep by Colleen Coble. Today I’m starting the next in the series, Cry In The Night.
Connie J Randel says
What you love best about audiobooks. –
Reading my books while I do everything! Like trying to win another audiobook
What your pet peeve about audiobooks is—if you have one.
Not all books are available on audiobook. Some narrators aren’t great, but usually I can get through a bad narrator.
What’s the last audiobook you listened to and really enjoyed?
Currently listening the Clare Revell’s Say A Prayer series. I’m on book 2 right now.
Lynette says
I love being able to multitask with audiobooks! They help me survive the drudgery of my every day life…except for the poorly narrated ones. Unfortunately, I’ve listened to more than my fair share of poorly narrated books. One of my pet peeves is a breathy narrator. Sometimes if I adjust the speed it helps a bit.
I love Nancy Peterson. She’s done beautiful work with Melanie Dobson’s books.
Perrianne Askew says
I enjoy audiobooks because you can do something while you listen. My greatest desire would be a nice long audiobook for a road trip. While we don’t have any big plans, our family reunion trip in June should supply me with some nice audiobook time.
Sherri G says
I love audio books! I listen while I work around the house and during my exercise. One thing I love about ebooks is the ability to search for words (like a person’s name) if I can’t remember earlier mentions. With audio books and paper books, this isn’t possible though. I recently listened to a mystery series written by Anna Lee Huber which was narrated by Heather Wilds. She was probably the best narrator I’ve ever heard. Becky Doughty also does excellent narration as well as write an excellent novel.
Janice Garey says
Audiobooks add a new when they are read by an expert reader. I also like hearing books read by the author to know the exact tone that should be used in passages for the full impact of the writing. A pet peeve has been at times somehow getting off track and trying to find where I last read. The last book I throughly enjoyed on audiobook was Sold Into Freedom by Carole Towriss. Another big draw for me personally is it is easy on the eyes. I have vision problems so that is a biggie.
Betty Strohecker says
I wish I had time to listen to audio books, as I’ve heard so many people rave about them. Unfortunately, my daily tasks and caregiving responsibilities do not allow time or opportunity for this reading pleasure.
Happy Mother’s Day! I love the beautiful pictures of you and your mom! I lost my mom in 2004, but she is always with me. I will check out the reading neck lights. I didn’t know they existed.
Beverly C. says
I have only listened to a few audio books, but I did like the fact that I could listen while driving, walking or doing housework. It’s been a few years since I last listened to one and I don’t remember the name of it. Thanks for doing the giveaway!!
I to lost my mother about 12 years ago. I miss her dearly. Love your pics with your mom. Happy Mother’s Day!!
Mária says
As a non-native English speaker I read your books, but I am not able to read aloud without mistakes. Audiobooks help me to learn me properly the language in a very comfortable way. On audible trial, I had an opportunity to listen To Win Her Favor, which is longtime my favorite book. Since the beginning of pandemic I have read eight of your books, it helps me overcome these challenging times when I cannot meet my family and friends, and also my English has been improved quite nice. THANKS A LOT!
Tamera Alexander says
Your comments really blessed me today, Mária. Thank you so much. Not only for reading and taking these journeys with me, but for your kind and encouraging words!
Suzanne Sellner says
I love listening to audio books while I get ready for the day, while I get ready for bed at night, or when I make my bed or straighten/clean in the master bedroom. I feel as if I’m redeeming the time by using it for more than just mundane tasks. I’ll even move my CD player to the kitchen if I’ll be there for a while cooking. My mind can be somewhere else while my body is tethered to the house. The last audio book I listened to is Bookshop by the Sea by Denise Hunter on an MP3 CD. What a delightful book!
Angie Quantrell says
I am just like you! I LOVE listening to audio books when I am driving, and nothing makes it better than sipping my favorite coffee or tea. I also like to listen to them while stamping with a friend, though she usually gets to pick whatever she has on hand…Happy Mother’s Day!
Laciee says
I have been wanting to get into audiobooks for a while, I like the idea of listening to them while doing housework or driving. I have had limited experience with them but it seems that now is the time to start listening to them regularly.
Marilyn Turk says
I love audiobooks because I can “read” books when I’m doing other things like walking or sitting at the beach or even cooking. My pet peeve is when the narrator doesn’t change the voice at all between characters. I recently listened to a book by a very successful author (not you) by a female narrator, and I could not tell when the characters changed from female to male because they all sounded the same, very girly. It was very frustrating to listen to. The most recent book I listened to was on a long car trip my husband and I took and we both listened to it through the car’s audio, another wonderful thing about audiobooks. The book was The Long Flight Home by Alan Hlad. Unlike the other book I mentioned, this book was extremely well narrated by a male who used a variety of voices to distinguish between characters.
Judy says
I love audio books because it leaves your hands free to do other things and still be able to enjoy the book. Also sometimes just to lay back and relax and listen to a good book without having to hold it in your hands and keep your eyes upon it. Thanks for this giveaway.
Elma Mclucas says
Haven’t tried Audio Books yet..
Melissa Glor says
I love to listen to audiobooks while I drive as I spend a lot of time in the car taking my kiddos to various therapy appts. A really interesting audiobook U recently finished was the Women of Chateau Lafayette. A three time line story that really pulls the listener in!
Deanna B says
I have never listened to an audio book before, but loved being read to when I was a child. I am sure I would really like it, but the added expense compared to printed books has made me hesitant.
Lori says
I enjoy listening to audiobooks while cleaning and washing dishes. It makes the chores less tedious. I also find the unnatural tones distracting. Jude Mason does a great job narrating The Thief of Lanwyn Manor and several of Sarah E. Ladd’s other books.
Sandi Pascarelli says
Jude Mason is my favorite narrators! She reads Melanie Dickerson’s books too.
Larissa Holland says
1. I love listening to audiobooks when I run, walk, or do any sort of fitness activity. I also enjoy listening while I cook and prep for cooking.
2. I do have an audiobook pet peeve!!! I can barely tolerate it when the narrator gives characters accents that aren’t native to the setting. i.e. a southern accent given to someone from NYC. I also do not like it when the narrator sings. I prefer the narrator to just read the lyrics.
3. A great 3 book series I just finished on Audiobooks was the Heart of Alaska series by Tracie Peterson.
Mary B. says
I like to listen to audiobooks because it frees me up to do other things – whether that is housecleaning, cooking, driving etc….
The voice of the narrator has to be just right for me to listen to an audiobook.
Sara says
3. I’m listening to the audiobook version of Song of Redemption by Lynn Austin – I am really enjoying the way the narrator does the different voices. With so much dialogue, it is really enjoyable to know when the speaker changes.
SHERRY says
Audio books are the best! Multitasking. Cleaning house with a book. Running errands with a book. Laundry with a book. Everything is better with a book. I especially love it when the reader puts life into the characters. Right now I am listening to To Be Where You Are by Jan Karon. John McDonough is one of my favorite narrators.
Kimberly S says
I love audiobooks and would love to win your wonderful book!!
Amy Bradsher says
I love audiobooks! They make regular activities more fun – laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc. 😉
Janice Enlow says
I listen to audiobooks at home when I need to relax and rest my eyes. My pet peeve is fake, overdone southern accents. The last one I listened to was “Things We Save In a Fire” by Katherine Center. The narrator was excellent!
Victoria Griffin says
I LOVE audiobooks!! I have an hour long commute and audiobooks keep my mind engaged and help the time pass much more quickly!
Beth says
I love to listen while I drive.
Sometimes the voices narrators do for children drive me crazy!
The last good one I listened to was Becoming the Talbot Sisters.
Jeanette Fallon says
I love audio books in the car. I had a job that I drove all day from one location to another. I would listen to an audio book the whole day. I hated having to stop and actually do my job. I am retired now so I don’t drive as much. But we go camping and I take audio books with me to entertain us to our destination.
Holli Bennett says
I LOVE audiobooks. I enjoy listening while working in the kitchen or putting away laundry. As a mom of many I have a tough time carving our reading time. I’ve discovered audiobooks fills that gap for me in this season. Tamera Alexander was one of the first book series I read and I fell in love!
Jennifer Black says
1. I love being able to listen to audiobooks while I’m driving, getting ready in the morning, folding laundry, or working out. It’s a fabulous hands-free way to keep my reading going.
2. I would have to agree with you about dropping your voice low to sound really masculine. No thanks!
3. The last audiobook I absolutely loved was called My Golden Ship by Mary E. Ropes. It’s from Lamplighter Theatre so it’s more like watching a movie minus the screen as there are multiple people reading and sounds effects. This story tells the importance of sharing your faith with those you come in contact with through the lense of children’s fiction.
Andréa I says
I love reading audio books when I am waiting in car line for my kids, working (when it’s lonely at work), and working on craft projects at home. I like being able to read a good book and get something else done. My pet peeve about audio books is when during a series they switch narrators, I have the original voice in my head and the whole time I’m more focused on a different voice than the story. I’m currently re-listening to Melanie Dickerson’s Healer’s Apprentice. I love your books and I have been wanting a copy of this book. Thank you for writing and for sharing your books.
Autumn Farley says
I love that I can listen as I drive. My pet peeve is that I love the feel and smell of actual books. It has been awhile since I have listened to an audiobook.
Josanne Hatley says
Hello Tamara.
Happy Mother’s Day to you ad well. You have a lovely family. I really enjoyed our time with you last week(?) with our bookclub. Thank you for giving us this chance to win a give away!
I really enjoy audio books because I can get things done while enjoying books when I’m pressed for time. It also makes laundry, dishes, etc. more fun!
The other reason I like audio books is because my husband and I have different sleeping patterns and if I can’t sleep, I can listen without needing a light and disturbing him. I have carpal tunnel also in one hand and if I read too long my hand goes numb. It’s nice too, just to relax and be read to😊
My pet peeve with audio books, is when the accents are over the top. When they try too hard, it’s actually harder for me. Also when they trail off (voice drops)at the end of sentences. The last one I listened to was Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Thanks again!
Suzan Spraktes says
One of the things I love about audiobooks is that they are an entertaining and relaxing escape, especially with an outstanding narrator.
A pet peeve of mine is when a word is mispronounced.
One of the last audio books I listened to and really enjoyed was “To Kill a Mockingbird”, beautifully narrated by Sissy Spacek.
Deanna Newland says
I absolutely love every novel of yours that I have read. I started out reading To Whisper Her Name and ever since I have been hooked. I have been wanting to listen to audiobooks but I have not tried one yet. So I am unable to answer any of your questions. Thank you for writing such wonderful novels, it is because of your books that I have enjoyed reading again.
Reta says
I love being able to read while driving, working in the house and grooming my dog. I dislike when the narrator tries to mimic a regional accent and it just detracts from the story.
I love your books and went to Carnton on a cold rainy day a few years ago.
Sheryl Narnes says
The thing that I dislike about audiobooks is when I start one and it’s the same reader/narrater. Confuses me. lol.
Julie says
I like being able to “read” a book while driving solo on a road trip. The last audio book I listened to and enjoyed was Carol Burnett’s autobiography narrated by Carol herself! 🙂 I cannot listen to audio books that are monotone or use silly intonations for different characters.
Connie Pettersen says
I absolutely love audio books. They are a the only fiction I “read” because I can multitask while listening. Plus, I get a lot more out of the audio versions as they come alive like radio drama. A good narrator really makes the book enjoyable as well. I’m currently listening to When Twilight Breaks by Sarah Sundin. I’ve enjoyed all of your books so far, all by audio. Thanks SO much for your time and talent in writing such amazing stories. All your hours of isolation and hard work as a writer/researcher are much appreciated! We’ve been to Franklin, TN and toured the plantation so it’s fun revisiting it through your novels.
Desiree says
I love audio books because I can do so many things at once while not having to put it down🙂
Rachelle Gwin says
I LOVE audio books. It allows me to “read” while driving, doing my nails, cleaning, pretty much any time I need my hands free. My pet peeve is narrators whose voice I don’t like. I dislike getting a book by my favorite author and it’s a bad narrator. I’ll return the audio and pick up and read the book myself. 🙂 A Note Yet Unsung has been one of my favorite audiobooks. I had just lost my grandmother a few months before listening to this. I literally sat in the garage crying until the chapter was over before getting out. I then read the physical copy farther past the point so I wouldn’t go into work the next morning after crying on my way there. 😂
Kellie Dickes says
My life would be so sad without audiobooks. I just can’t read as much as I used too due to very active children but I can listen and clean. I love a good narrator who brings drama and diction and depth to the characters.
Gayle Adams says
I love listening to audio books. I listen in the car or even while im working in the house like sewing or cooking. I get caught up in listening to the book especially in a good suspense or lots of action.
Jennifer K says
Audiobooks make my chores go faster!!!!!
Meagan Godsey says
I do have a pet peeve when it comes to audio books, and you nailed it with your answer. I almost cannot stand it when a female narrator tries to sound masculine. It just doesn’t work!
Kelly Kovar says
I listen to audiobooks everyday on my hour and a half drive to work. It really makes the drive doable. I don’t like it when narrator’s make the book sound stressful. Right now, I am listening to “Marrying Daisy Bellamy” by Susan Wiggs.
Teri DiVincenzo says
What you love best about audiobooks.
Me? I have recently discovered That I can listen to audiobooks while I work… That says double the number of books I can read, which brings me so much joy!
What your pet peeve about audiobooks is—if you have one.
I insanely dislike it when audiobook narrators mispronounce words. And yes, I have heard it!
What’s the last audiobook you listened to and really enjoyed? Every one I have read has been just delightful! My last one was A Dance in Donnegal by Jennifer Deibel.
Brenda Murphree says
I know I’m too late because I’m just now opening my emails for today/yesterday. But I love audiobooks because I can sew, crochet or put puzzles together while listening.
Lisa Gallup says
1. I love audiobooks and listen continuously
2. When they don’t make the reading exciting.
3.Right now I am listening to the Librarian of Boone’s Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer. Distant Shores by Karen Kingsbury I just listened to and ate it up!
