There’s a little blog “game” called CURRENTLY that’s been going around the Internet, and I’ve really enjoyed hearing some of my favorite bloggers share their answers. It’s a great way to get to know where someone is “at” in any given moment of life! Just for fun, here are my answers:
Loving: The New Year! I just love the promise of a fresh slate. Since I haven’t been on a tight deadline until just now, I’ve spent the past few weeks since Christmas sorting and organizing and puttering and even doing a little bit of decor refreshing in our house. Nothing huge, but it’s amazing the difference new curtains and pillows and switching furniture around can make.
Reading: I read James L. Rubart’s The Pages of Her Life for endorsement recently. I’m a pathetically slow reader, but I don’t know when I’ve read a book so quickly, cover to cover in just a few days. Highly recommended! And now I’m reading non-fiction by Lori Roeleveld, who is a master of her book title: The Art of Hard Conversations. A great book for such a time as we find ourselves in here in America!
Excited About: Ken and I aren’t doing any traveling for the next two months, but then we have such a fun trip planned for April! After flying in to teach at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference in California (a fun trip in itself!) we plan to rent a car and travel almost 1000 miles along the Pacific Coast Highway/Highway 101 from Santa Cruz to Seattle (where a new grandbaby, due mid-March, will await us!) We have
Listening To: The Soundtrack from Poldark. We’ve loved this season of the Netflix show and the music is stunningly beautiful! Great music to read or write to.
Dreaming
Working On: The third Chandler Sisters novel! My deadline is June 1, but we have a lot going on this spring, so I want to have the book mostly finished before we leave for our road trip in April. I’m loving telling Britt Chandler’s story. And of course revisiting Phylicia and Joanna and catching readers up on their stories. Watch for Joanna’s story, Chasing Dreams, later this year!
Wearing: I must confess, my work “uniform” is black yoga pants and men’s oversized chambray shirts. I own half a dozen of each and find that to be such a comfortable outfit. I do put on makeup and cute earrings every day, but my hair is usually in a bun when I’m working, and I wear shoes only when absolutely necessary! 🙂
Singing: Ever since the American Christian Fiction Writers Conference in Nashville last September, I can’t get the song “Reckless Love” out of my mind… “Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God…”
Thinking About: My mom. She’s been in heaven more than two years now (which just doesn’t seem possible) and I’m more and more grateful for her impact on my life and on this world. If I leave a legacy half as rich as hers, I will be grateful.
Needing: A new reading chair. I sold a pair of matching wing chairs that were too hard to work with in our already difficult-to-arrange living room. I’m hoping to replace them with one perfect curl-up-and-read-in chair. Have been on the hunt, but so far, no luck.
Sparking Joy: “Spark joy” is an expression made popular by organization guru Marie Kondo. It’s one of those expressions that is so apt. What sparks joy for me these days is FaceTiming with my faraway grandbabies.
Creating: I was able to get multiple copies of some beautiful calendars for a few dollars and I’m crafting paper heart garlands for my daughters (and one to give away to a reader of this blog!) I made a heart garland for Valentine’s Day three years ago, and it sparked so much joy (before that was even a “thing” ;)). The garland has been hanging in our house in various places ever since—currently in our bedroom.
What about you? I’d love it if you’d choose two or three of the above topics and give your answers in the comments. I spent a relaxing Sunday afternoon cutting out hearts—75 of them!—for a new garland. E
veryone who comments and answers at least one of the questions will be entered in a drawing for this new garland. I’ll name a winner tomorrow, and the garland should arrive at your house in time for Valentine’s Day.

I’m currently working on finding a new paint color to paint on the interior walls of my house. I had no idea how hard it would be to find the perfect greige (grey/beige) . I can’t stop singing “Best News Ever” by Mercy Me. This song is amazing and my boys love it too. I can’t wait to see my house when it’s finally painted! 😉

Loving: I’m loving life. I had a “stress heart attack” the end of October. (yes stress heart attack) When a doctor tells you “most people don’t survive what you had”, you have to feel thankful! So I am loving life and thanking the Lord for not being through with me yet!
Pam Jenness says
Thinking of: my word for the year, flourish. My personal focus statement based on that word is “Make choices that help you flourish in faith, fitness, finance and friendship.” It’s proving to be a fight to do all four of those things at the same time. I feel more like I’m floundering than flourishing! Yet, I press on.
Loving: the Women’s Bible study at my church, two 4 month old mutts, and a tasty cup of coffee.
Reading: Book Girl by Sarah Clarkson. Reading this book means that my “want-to-read” list is growing faster than the time I actually have to read!

This year I plan to catch up on reading through some series that I have on my bookshelf.
I love your heart garland! So cute and creative!

Hi, Deb, My word’ for the year is “Joy” and since I love creating, I am making a “Joy Journal”. It is such fun and choosing a word for the year has help me , as someone else said ‘live with intention’ (hope I didn’t misquote that). It always helps to listen to Zach Williams song “Old Chruch Choir” and dance a little:)!

You’re right. Reading your answers is a great way to get to know you.
Listening to: Since I’ve been taking a yoga stretch classes, I’ve found yoga and spa music especially relaxing and will play those sorts of music on Pandora on my cell phone. As I’m working on something else, I’ll be cradled in lovely, soothing music.
Looking forward to: My next trip will be to fly to visit my sister and brother-in-law, who live states away. During the visit we’ll drive to another state for a cousins’ reunion in the mountains. This will be the first time we’ve done this and should be lots of fun.
Thinking about: My precious husband and I have been married for almost 44 years, and we’re just beginning to think about downsizing to a retirement community. So, I’ve begun weeding out–giving away, throwing away, recycling, etc. It’s a daunting task, but doing it gradually will be far preferable to waiting until the last minute.

Hello! I’m wearing stretchy jeans, not really jean fabric at all, more yoga pants. And a shirt what will endure the messes made with the grands. And my most-photographed sweater (hint: OLD), which is a mandatory item for ease of put it on, take it off, for those mid-life hot spells. I’m thinking of my dad, who has been gone almost as long as your mom. I do so miss him and wish I could just have one more hug and conversation. Sigh. That is coming in the future. Yay! Your house is looking springy and fresh! Happy Monday!

I love the idea of making something new out of something old. The garland is so sweet. You have a lovely home. Hope you have a great time traveling up the Pacific coastline. If you get a chance, check out the lighthouse at Heceta Head near Florence. Also, near Coos Bay, take a side trip to see the garden and seal rock at Shore Acres State Park, former site of the Simpsons home (lumber baron)–very pretty. The Tillamook Cheese factory is must see too. Best ice cream ever! Looking forward to the next Chandler sisters book.
Jen Black says
I enjoyed reading your blog post! Thanks for sharing these glimspes into your life. (Ken’s, too.) 😊
Loving: the gently falling snow outside of the window! I love each season for different reasons, but am reminded when seeing the snow fall that God has washed my sins as white as snow. It has snowed several times over the past few days, and I just love looking at the sparkly snow! (And have been known to make snowmen…even on my car roof!) ☃️
Wearing: jeans and layering long sleeve T-shirts with a scarf or sweatshirt… anything that can be easily washed.
Patty says
I’m currently reading The Lacemaker by Laura Frantz, I haven’t gotten to far into it yet, haven’t had any dedicated reading time lately, but you can’t go wrong with one of her books!
I’m excited about our 4th Anniversary trip to Hilton Head Island in April!
Joan Arning says
I’m loving less activities in January. Several years ago I started scrapbooks for each of my grandchildren through middle school and usually work on them in January. Last year my sister fell and I spent time there so only finished one page. This year I’m playing catch-up. I also start cleaning one drawer or shelf each day in January so am working on that. (I’m actually behind.)
I finished an advance copy of Never Let Go by Elizabeth Goddard early this morning and loved it! Such suspense!
I am excited about a trip to The Ark Encounter! I know you have been there! A friend and I planned a trip last year but health issues cancelled those plans but we are trying again this summer!
I guess my scrapbooking includes Working on, Creating and Loving!

I have also been enjoying the grace of January to read. I’ve not kept track of how many books, but I guess is about 10. I’m currently reading The Great Lakes Lighthouse Brides Collection.
And I’m thinking of finishing craft projects that have never been completed. I have an embroidery project that was started in the 1970’s 😯.

What a fun game! I think I’m going to steal this idea for a Facebook page that I help oversee! READING (one that I’ll always be happy to answer!): I’m reading Somebody Like You by Beth Vogt. I was a little hesitant about reading it because my husband went to Afghanistan during his army days (safely, thankfully); I wondered if this storyline might be a little intense for me. And now . . . I can barely put the book down. One of the best I’ve read in a long time! LISTENING TO: “Come Along” by husband-wife duo Soulbreather. It’s so beautiful . . . mellow, perfect vocals, gorgeous music, and the lyrics are written by the amazing Mark Gersmehl (of Whiteheart). These two love the Lord! Highly recommend this CD! DREAMING OF: My husband has to work in a beachy area (poor guy) for a week every spring, and this year, the assignment coincides with our kids’ spring break! If all the loose ends work out, I’m dreaming of a week at the beach with a free place to stay!
Linda Stringer says
I’ve been thinking about my Mom. She’s been in Heaven a month and a half. Still hard to adjust to. We had a huge fire just off the square in our town last week and I wanted so badly to call her and tell her about it.
My favorite winter attire is fleece lined pants and sweaters or sweatshirts. Fuzzy socks and slippers for at home wear.

Working on…cleaning, de-cluttering and organizing my house.
Thinking (and trying not to fret) about…a major surgery that I will face in the near future.

Hi, Deb, from Garden City, KS! Thx for so generously blessing your fans on a regular basis. I’d love to win your latest effort – that heart garland, so here goes…
1) Needing – I was needing a new (at least to me) easy chair for my living room. I found two used but beautifully upholstered matching goose-neck chairs for $100 from a resident in my town. Perfect match to my living room decor & perfect to support my aging frame – I do A LOT of sitting 🙂
2) Reading – I am currently re-reading “The Shack” by Wm. Paul Young & just finished the wonderful “Lizzy and Jane” by Katherine Reay. Being half-Italian, it blessed my soul.
3) Working on – Tonight is the first night of a three month small group of ten women called “Restoring The Shack”. The videos, hosted by Wm. Paul Young will address issues of grief, hope, wonder & relationship with the Holy Spirit. It begins in 45 minutes so I’d better sign-off!
Amber Woodward says
Thanks for the beautiful giveaway!
Reading: With This Pledge…waited so long for it to one out and I’m loving every page! Thanks, Tamara!
Thinking about: my brother-in-law. He’s receiving a kidney right now. Praying the surgery goes well and recovery as well. Also praying for the family who has lost a loved one and given this gift to us.
Sparking joy: spending a quiet night with my children and dogs all getting along!

Hi, Deb,
I’ve always admired your heart garlands and would like to try my hand at making one sometime. That is if I can put reading aside long enough. I don’t really need anything and I am so uncrafty. That’s why I need your garland. Haha. I am looking for some little spoons at TJ Maxx.

I am looking forward to warmer weather. I love when spring arrives and my daffodils start blooming and all the birds return. It’s a promise of renewal.

I love, love, love the heart garland, and I’m stealing (gently borrowing) the idea and the questions for our MOPS (Moms of Preschoolers) valentine meeting. So thank you! What a great use of old calendars!
A few answers:
Excited about: the MOPS group that I lead. What an amazing group of young moms!
Wearing: Ugh! New shoes. Really expensive, with orthotics inside. I’d much rather go barefoot. These are not comfortable. They say I’ll get used to them. Not ugly, like orthotic shoes used to be. Look like good tennis shoes.
Sparking Joy: My grown-up granddaughters who live close to me and spend lots of time with us. Oh how I love them! Just wish my other two lived close, too.

Something I’m excited about: is how a prayer from my heart led to a blessing much bigger than my request because God’s way is better than ours.
Creating: I recently supervised my granddaughter painting for an art competition at her school. She had in mind what she wanted to create and we talked through it as she did it. It made me realize how much I miss painting and I had a vision in church Sunday of a painting I’d like to do for our Missions Auction coming up next month if I can find time.
And you inspired me to do heart garlands so I would love one that you’ve completed.
Mandy H says
I want to make one of these garlands!
