Eye Surgery and Eclipses

August 23, 2017 By Robin Lee Hatcher

My corneal eye surgery last week went really well. The day after surgery was rough. The day after that was better. I’m still trying to limit computer time, and I’m also trying to avoid bright sunlight. Both strain my eye and cause some pain. But all in all, I’m hopeful for a good and timely recovery.

Since Idaho was in the path of the Great American Solar Eclipse, I had to make one exception to the “avoiding bright sunlight” rule. Boise had a 99.48% eclipse (considered a partial eclipse but very close to the full works). Not total darkness at the moment of totality, but still very cool. Just about 30 miles north got into the 100% range.

Three of my neighbors joined me for the event (Jerry popped in and out), and it was so worth experiencing it.

* Coolest part: About 7 minutes before totality, the crickets began chirping, just as if it were evening. It made all of us smile and laugh because it was so unusual to hear at that time of day.

* Second coolest part: Feeling the drop in temperature as the eclipse progressed; we had a 10 to 13 degree drop that began about fifteen or twenty minutes before totality. The temps seemed to increase faster on the other side of the eclipse.

* Third coolest part: The weird color of the air at totality; not so much shady like a regular evening, but sort of a buttery tone.

I’m glad I got to experience it. If not for my surgery, I might have braved the million people who crowded into the wilderness and other remote areas of my state. Even without that, it was an experience I will remember the rest of my life.

Someone in the news or online called it an amazing coincidence that at this particular moment in Earth’s history the sun’s diameter is about 400 times larger than that of the moon while the sun is also about 400 times farther away. Which is why humankind can sometimes witness a total eclipse of the sun.

“Amazing coincidence?” Sorry. I can’t go there. I believe it is so much more than that.

“Who commands the sun not to shine, And sets a seal upon the stars;”
(Job 9:7, NASB95)

Answer: The LORD God Almighty.

With all the noisy hoopla, I think most missed what I thought was the neatest thing. When the eclipse ended all the birds started singing again!

Yes, there was that silence that fell over the earth. Even the breeze we had stilled.

Thanks, Becky. It has gone better than I’d been led to expect. So thankful to God for that. I know I still have a ways to go but I’m doing well.

    Robin,
My brother’s chickens went to bed in the henhouse, thinking it was dusk. He lives near Bellingham, Washington, so it was about 90% there, too.
It’s so good to give the glory to our God who commands the heavens and the earth! No coincidence in MY world, thank the Lord.
Oh by the way, I love your books! 🙂

Amen, Robin! That’s such a cool Scripture in light of the eclipse. Glad to hear this update on your eye. Continued prayers for compete healing.

All the best on your recovery from surgery, Robin. And I love the scripture you included … God is the author of the amazing interplay of sun and moon with the differences in size, the distance between the two … the eclipse is no “random occurrence”. Our God is amazing!
