Family Music
Sometimes when we’ve hosted our peeps’ friends, their parents ask us if it’s any trouble. Typically, I’ve responded, “If I can ignore seven, I can ignore one more!” And that’s nothing but the truth. I’ve changed my tune since we settled our peeps at their respective colleges. Now we’re down to just two sitting ‘round our school table, and you’d best believe I’m giving them all my attention (whether they want it or not).
It’s taking some getting used to, this new beat. We’re cooking less, but TD eats a ton more. Fewer passengers sit in back, and we have a new driver behind the wheel. The house is quieter, but my thoughts are louder. Ostensibly, I have more time to write, but my fingers have busied themselves doing other things.
Even our Sundays have a different rhythm, a different sound. Take this week for instance.

Brown Sugar worked on a song on her guitar. She taught me some new vocabulary that sounded like Am and G7. Then she practiced chords to accompany her older sister and me on The Theme from Love Story, one of our piano duets. We’ll surprise her on her next visit.

Sometimes we dine with the newlyweds. When we do, we usually play a rousing family board game that involves lots of laughter and debate. But this week, Hubby and TD enjoyed a quieter one-on-one game of checkers. (It ended in a best of three.)

I switched from one keyboard to another to take a break from an editing project. There’s nothing like Bagatelle for working out the kinks in these old fingers. Talk about a fun way to procrastinate!

I’m also preparing for a writing and literature class I’m teaching. How grateful I am that I get to consider reading C.S. Lewis both work and leisure, in my favorite purple headscarf, no less. I hope TD enjoys this one when he starts it next week. Have you had a chance to read it?
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…He made every thing beautiful in his time… (Ecclesiastes 3: 11)
In what season do you find yourself right now? I’d love to hear about it!
in Him,

Robin, the only thing that would make this post better is if I could HEAR that music you wrote so beautifully about! Love this!
Which “music”—our shouting during games, the sound of pages turning, yelling “Hit the brake!” when Brown Sugar is driving, or the piano and guitar? 😉
It was sweet reading about your new season in life. It’s a good reminder to enjoy the now while my children are still young.
Hubby and I were talking about how when we started out, we asked God for a “baby”—not an adult child living far away or a house full of size-thirteen sneakers. But every season has its beauty. Enjoy your “now.”
LOVE The Great Divorce. ❤️ Probably my favorite Lewis book outside of Narnia.
I loved The Screwtape Letters, but this is so good. Much to chew on. I’ll be sure to share your endorsement with the class!
The Great Divorce is no light read, is it? I’ve done lots of chewing on that one. Such an interesting comparison. A Grief Observed is also a favorite. And yes, Screwtape Letters is a must read. LOL at this line: “If I can ignore seven, I can ignore one more!” So funny. Thanks for the great post!
A Grief Observed is on my list. I’ll have to move it up now. And I’m sure you understand when it comes to my peeps—my eyes may look the other way, but my heart? Never. Thanks for reading!
