Last week Joe and I got away to Sarasota, Florida with some dear friends and went deep-sea fishing. Talk about fun!
The first day we fished for shark and the second day for yellow fin, amber jack, and barracuda. Though we didn’t catch a ton of fish, three of us caught sharks the first day!
Joe and I usually practice “catch and release,” but Captain Brian took these bad boys home to eat. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten shark, have you? I’ve had swordfish and squid and octopus, etc… And my favorite seafood by far is broiled scallops and shrimp. But I’ve never had shark that I can recall. Captain Brian says it’s very tasty!
My sweet (& snarky) friend Kim was the only one who caught a barracuda, bless her. I’m so proud of her! Those things are fascinating to watch swim around the boat. Very territorial. And those teeth! Kim and Jerry have been fishing with Captain Brian for 30+ years!
While walking around one afternoon we saw “Unconditional Surrender,” the huge statue of a sailor kissing a nurse that’s located in Bayfront Park between O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill and Marina Jack.
As reported by Sarasota’s news, “Unconditional Surrender is one of a series of computer-generated sculptures by artist Seward Johnson, the grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I, the co-founder of Johnson & Johnson. The aluminum statue resembles a 1945 photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square. The statue, which first came to Sarasota as a temporary exhibit in 2005, was bought by Jack Curran and donated to the city in his wife’s memory.”
It was a quick trip. But the time together, the laughter (oh how we laughed), the delicious food—and the fishing—were all wonderful and timely blessings that I’m so grateful for. Now I’m holed up for the next three weeks finishing my next book. My first contemporary that will release next year from Focus on the Family.
And now, fishing for men . . .

We live in central Florida but used to visit friends down in Boca Grande. Our friend took us fishing out on his boat and I caught ( after much wrestling) a 125 lb Tarpon. Now I’m a 105lb lady and it was a battle for the ages. Catch and release but I still have the hook that was on my rod on that day .

Wow on that Tarpon, Jocelyn. Good for you! Bet that was fun.

My husband and I both love to fish, although for health reasons, we don’t get out too often anymore. Our favorite is fly-fishing for bluegills (panfish) in spring when they are on their spawning beds. I have never eaten shark but really like most types of seafood! Interesting blog today! Thanks!

I’ve never tried to fly-fish, Kathy. But what you shared makes me want to. Thanks!

Your fishing trip sounds delightful, and I enjoyed seeing the photos. I’ve been deep sea fishing at Acapulco. However, my daughter and I spent the entire fishing outing lying down with ice on our necks since we were seasick. The crew did most of the fishing. I did go fishing with my parents one time and caught a blow fish. That was my one claim to fishing fame!
My favorite seafood to eat would be shrimp and scallops like you!

Ugh, sorry on the seasickness, Suzanne. No fun at all. LOL on that blow fish. You’ve got me on that one. I’ve never snagged one of those. 🙂

I haven’t gone fishing since I was a young preteen and I caught 12 fish. I wouldn’t bait my own hook, so my grandfather had to keep baiting my hook and he only caught 1 fish that day. LOL!! No, I haven’t been deep sea fishing, but I love Shrimp. Yum!!

What a sweet memory of your grandfather. Bless that man, only catching 1 fish that day. But he took other joys with him from that day, I’m sure. 🙂

What a fun post, Tammy.
You are a woman of many talents—wow! Such a cute photo of you with your shark. 🙂
I’ll admit that fishing holds NO appeal for me at all, LOL. But my dear brother-in-law (who lost his battle with Covid this past November) was an avid fisherman, and he tried to convince me of the wonderful benefits of fishing. So whenever I read or see anything fishing-related now, I think of Bob.
Everyone in my family LOVES seafood—except for me! I do love a good hushpuppy, though. 😉
Thanks for sharing this today, and blessings as you write that contemporary story! Sending hugs, Patti Jo

I haven’t fished for years (though I’m sitting 15 feet from a lake right now 😬). I loved it in childhood years, with Grandma and Grandpa Anderson, and then out with friends in the teen years. Though it was mostly an excuse to bake in the sun all day, we caught some pretty good fish along the way. And ice fishing is a serious rite of passage in Minnesota. Eating fish…yah no—unless the breading is twice the thickness of the fish.
Looks like you had a great time in Sarasota. Have a wonderful summer.

Sounds like y’all had a great time! I used to love to fish but I haven’t been fishing in many years. My dad took us a lot when we were kids. I like catfish and the fish Captain D fixes other than that I don’t like seafood.
