I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Today, it felt fitting to post the words of a beautiful hymn, as a corporate prayer of gratitude.
Thomas O. Chisholm wrote the poem Great Is Thy Faithfulness in 1923. He then sent it to William Runyan, who set the words to music. The hymn was published that same year. “Great is thy faithfulness” is a reference to Lamentations 3:22-23 which reads, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (KJV)
Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
Refrain:
Great is thy faithfulness, great is thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine and ten thousand beside.
And isn’t that the very best reason to be thankful? God bless each of you!

Love this hymn. While I love singing the praise songs of today, I miss singing all the old hymns. These were an important part of my life growing up & even into adulthood.
Yes! Hymns were a huge part of my church experience growing up. I attend a contemporary service now and we mostly sing modern praise music, but the worship team does a great job of incorporating hymns, too.
Amen and amen. Blessings to you and your family, my friend.
Thanks, Tammy! Blessings to you!
What a beautiful reminder of all of God’s blessings to us! I love this hymn. It’s amazing to me that so many of our cherished hymns were taken from scripture.
Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving weekend to you, Betty! Yes, I love that scripture inspired so many worship songs.
I believe it was Thomas Chisholm who lived in the neighborhood of my grandma when she was growing up. He was an adult when she was little. Great is Thy Faithfulness was sung at the 50th anniversary of my grandparents in 1998 and also at my sister’s funeral in 2009. There are so many memories attached to that song.
Sylvia, it’s fascinating to hear of your family connections to this hymn! What an example of the enduring impact of art (in this case, words and a melody) dedicated to the glory of God.
