Second only to fireworks and flags, the things I most associate with the 4th of July holiday are cookouts and family. Burgers and dogs on the grill, homemade ice cream, cookies, apple pie.
And biscuits. Honey-glazed biscuits, to be precise.
Biscuits? That’s not an item usually found at the family cookout. Perhaps not, but if a 19th century baker was given the opportunity to sponsor a 4th of July parade wagon and hand out samples of her wares to entice customers to visit her bakery, a honey-glazed biscuit might be just the thing.
And if making said biscuits just happened to spark romance between a worthy hero and heroine . . . well, then, what could be better?
Here’s a recipe I found that sounds similar to what I imagine Abigail and Zach cooked up in the Taste of Heaven kitchen, although Abby used honey and melted butter for the glaze instead of honey and buttermilk.
Honey Glazed Buttermilk Biscuits
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup butter, chilled
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp honey + 1 tbsp buttermilk, for glaze
Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or using your fingertips, breaking down the butter until no pieces larger than a pea remain.
In a small bowl, whisk together buttermilk and honey. Pour buttermilk mixture in to the flour mixture and stir with a fork or a spatula until the dough comes together into a shaggy mass. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until the dough comes together. Add in an extra tablespoon of buttermilk if the dough is too try, or a bit of extra flour if you dough is too wet.
Roll the dough out until it is about 1/2-inch thick and use a 2 1/2 or 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut it in to rounds. Reroll dough as needed. You should get 6-8 biscuits, depending on the size of your cutter.
Arrange biscuits on prepared baking sheet and, using a pastry brush, brush on glaze of 1 tbsp buttermilk combined with 1 tbsp honey.
Bake biscuits for 14-16 minutes, until golden brown. If a little extra sweetness is desired, brush on more honey glaze and return to oven for 1 additional minute.
Transfer biscuits to a wire rack to cool before serving. Makes 6-8 biscuits.
What are some of your favorite 4th of July eats?

My favorite is probably the comfort food, as I think of it, potato salad! Appreciate your sharing the biscuit recipe – it sounds delicious! It is going to be a warm one today, here in Texas, so ice cream will be refreshing.

My favorite food to celebrate the 4th is definitely burgers and banana pudding ((the ice box kind, not the oven kind 😉)). I would go hungry, though, if we had no food but were still able to spend time with family and friends. THAT’S my favorite, for sure.

Those biscuits sound yummy, just as they did in the book. I loved that scene when they were working together to save the bakery. The entire parade sequence was fabulous, especially the touch of meeting the orphaned boy and putting him to work.
We usually grill for the 4th: smoked sausage, hamburgers, sometimes steak (from our own cows), chicken or pork chops. Whatever we have.
I’d love to win the autographed copy. This series has quickly become my favorite reads of the year. I’ve recommended them to many friends and reviewed them on my blog. Great writing, Karen! Looking forward to the next one.

Thanks, Rebecca! I’m delighted that you have enjoyed the Hamilton stories so well. And I so appreciate you recommending them to friends. Word of mouth really makes a difference. And reviews are wonderful!
We are grillers, too, but I’ve never had the opportunity to cook meat I’ve raised. Probably because I never raised any animals. 🙂 I love the idea, though. Feels very pioneer-ish.

Our family always gets together for lunch before the annual parade at 3 pm which we all go uptown to watch. Then we meet again uptown for the big fireworks display at 10 pm. We almost always grill out for lunch. Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, cheesy potatoes, pasta salad, freshly sliced tomatoes, apple salad, chips and dip, fresh corn on the cob, homemade mac and cheese and for dessert we had 2 different varieties of strawberry cake, peanut butter bars and brownies. We are thankful to live in a free country and can spend time together as a family.

By the way – I did end up eating biscuits on the 4th! My son was flying home yesterday from a month spent studying abroad in Germany, so my father-in-law and I drove to Dallas to pick him up. We stopped for dinner at Cracker Barrel on the way home, and we had biscuits with our meal. Seemed fitting!
I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th, with lots of great food and time with family.
