My last blog post was all about my goals for 2018. Although I didn’t know it when I wrote that post, things were about to change.
Three days later, I wound up in the ER in a lot of pain. Five days later, I had surgery. I’ve been recovering ever since. It’s been rockier than I expected, but I think I can safely say I’ve turned a corner.
First goal to be adjusted was my plan to knock out 5 of my 7 remaining core college requirements during 2018. On the last day allowed, I dropped my science and lab courses. I knew there was no way I could keep up or catch up. The amount of hours of study required each week just wouldn’t allow it. Sigh.
My writing and exercise goals both had to be put on hold for a few weeks as well. I’m back to writing now, but I’ll have to slowly increase the exercise. Not sure when I’ll be back to where I was before.
Life has a way of interrupting our best-laid plans, doesn’t it? And we all have to learn to roll with what comes our way and trust God during the process. Our own health. The health of a loved one. Natural disasters. Job loss. Many countless other things.
And sometimes, even as believers in Christ, we find ourselves wondering why these things happen.
Randy Alcorn posted a beautiful story about Eric Liddell’s (Olympic medalist introduced to many of us in Chariots of Fire) final years as a prisoner of the Japanese during WWII that is such an encouragement.
I hope you will take a moment to follow the link and read it. It’s so worthwhile, and a testament of how God makes all things work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Thank you sooooooo much for sharing the link about Eric Liddell’s life. So very encouraging. Sorry that you had to go through your pain and surgery. Praying for healing. Not sure how to say it without being flippant but I guess you wouldn’t have been sharing about Eric in your blog if you hadn’t been sidetracked from your goals /plans. If it is any encouragement to you, please know that your blog really encouraged me today. Thank you.

Thanks for that link – what a wonderful story about Liddell! I remember crying my way through that movie more than once but didn’t know about his work while in prison. An amazing man and an amazing story. And best wishes for a quick recovery!

Praying for you, Robin. You have been an inspiration to me in your goal setting and work toward meeting those goals. Now adversity has shifted your plans, but with the other comments—God has got you! We plan our course, but God establishes our steps. You may be an even greater witness now!
