In 2012, Barbour released A Wedding Transpires on Mackinac Island as part of one of their fiction lines. I love this story. It’s set on one of my favorite places to escape and combines a blend of romance and suspense. In many ways, it was my first foray into the full length story telling like the Hidden Justice series. It was well received by readers, and about a year ago I got the rights back to the story.
That means I’ve reread it, had it copy edited, and am now getting ready for a fresh cover for the book. But it means it also needs a title that better matches the mystery/suspense genre.
That’s where y’all come in. I’m running a contest to help me retitle this novel. Y’all are a creative group of readers, and I’d love your ideas.

Back Cover Copy:
Attorney Alanna Stone has never forgotten Jonathon Covington–or the pain of his betrayal. In fact, he’s why she’s avoided returning to Mackinac Island. But an exhausting, high profile case and an urgent plea from her parents bring her home. She immediately finds herself thrust into controversy as an unsolved murder once again turns public opinion against her family.
Jonathon has been waiting for her return, but the woman he sees now has little in common with the one who left. Will they be able to lay aside the past and let God heal their hearts, or will reconciliation come too late?
A Couple Reviews for Flavor:
Cara totally captured the essence that is the island. You will feel like you’re really there. It’s distinct culture is captivating and the pages capture it well. The characters nab you right from the beginning. The book is filled with intrigue and suspense. Murder — yes — murder. If the characters survive this book it might be a miracle, but of course, I won’t tell because that would be considered a spoiler. I don’t do spoilers. This book is a stolen kiss right before the gun goes off.”

“When I first started reading the story, I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into. While there was definitely a “romance” storyline to follow, I was more intrigued by the mystery that kept unfolding! The author, Cara C. Putman, does an excellent job in drawing the reader into the story. At times, there were multiple mystery lines to follow…and while I was pretty sure I had the one figured out, the other two were not so easy! I also loved how Putman brought Alanna’s past to light, allowing her to work through some aspects of her teen years to allow for continued healing in her present life. It’s a great reminder to us that although the past is best left in the past, sometimes you need to go back in order to move forward!”

Hello Cara. I like Monica’s title: ‘Mystery and Matrimony on Mackinac’ . I came up with the same idea, except with the word ‘Island’ included in the title. But I see Monica got here first, so my vote is with her. My wife, Nicole Santana, reviews for you and is a huge fan of yours. She has made me a huge fan, too. Thank you for all the wonderful stories.

Ah, Robett, thank you! Your wife is so sweet!

I just read this a couple of days ago. It was given to our church library and after the head librarian read it I did. I found a glaring error in dialog when Jonathan apologizes to Alanna. He said he was a boar. I know it is a legitimate word but the wrong one for the sentence and meaning. It threw me. I thought your copy editor would have caught this. Anyway. just a little heads up. Things like that throw me and puts me out of the story for a minute or two. As for a new title, Mackinac Island Mystery or Getting Back Home.

Thanks, Connie.

When you re-publish this novel with a new cover and title would you label it on the cover as a mystery? I remember reading it the first time around and thought it would be featuring weddings. I was very surprised when half-way through the book it turned into a mystery and not a wedding in sight. I enjoy mysteries and reading this book, but would have appreciated knowing it was a mystery before picking it up. I am glad that you can get your books back out there and re-published. That is wonderful.
Sylvia M. says
That should say “hardly” a wedding in site.
Cara Putman says
Absolutely! I’ve always felt the title was a mismatch…probably the only time out of all my books. Excited to repackage it so the mystery/suspense moves to the front. It’s really 50/50.
