  1. What a cute post, Karen. I sang all these songs growing up (and when we lived in Abilene years back too 🥰) and was singing them again in my head when reading through your list. A favorite hymn is How Great Thou Art. Please, when we’re together next, let’s sing! 🎶🤍

  2. Hi Karen, This was such a fun post! I laughed and laughed through that list of occupations matched to the hymns! Thanks for brightening my day!

    1. So glad you enjoyed it, Roxanne. One of the added bonuses that comes from loving hymns, is that I know what songs my historical characters were likely singing in church . . . because I’m still singing them today. I love connecting to the past like that, realizing that the songs I’m singing were sung by Christians in centuries past.

  3. These are great, so well done. They all are suitable, but the funniest to me is the IRS hymn. I love hymns too. It’s always a favorite time of the service for me. When my husband was a pastor, he was part of a four person acapella choir. Their signature song was “It Is Well With My Soul”. Thanks for this post.

    1. I would have loved to hear their redention of It Is Well. The third verse on that song never fails to give me spiritual goosebumps. Such a vision of Christ’s triumphant return!

      1. I lost my husband in January, 2023 after 57 years of marriage. The hymns sang at his funeral were “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “It Is Well With My Soul”, all great for “going home.”

  4. Our small community church does a mix of traditional and contemporary hymns. My kiddos, husband, and I love the old hymns. We have a sweet older man at our church who plays the piano by ear and loves turning all the great old hymns into Ragtime music. 😁 Sometimes we have trouble keeping up with his tempo, but it’s always a blast when he accompanies us.

My favorite hymn is Amazing Grace as sung by the cast of Maverick with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. I bought a copy of it years ago because they only play the song in the credits with the whole cast singing if you have a personal copy. It’s so good!

  5. I love these hymn puns Mrs. Witemeyer. I think the one that me laugh the most was the bakers hymn, “When the roll is called up yonder”. I will think of baking every time I sing this song now:) I think my favorite hymn is “You are my all in all”, I love hearing all the different voices in it. Thank you for the post, it made me giggle.

  6. I absolutely need more of these in my life! The first ones that came to mind we’re: another Baker’s hymn – One Bread, One Body. The Lawyer’s hymn – The Summons
The Optimetrist’s hymn – Eye Has Not Seen, and the Performer’s hymn – How Can I Keep From Singing
    Hilarious!
