Karen’s Fast Facts

As we celebrate our blog’s makeover and our newest blogging partner, we’re reintroducing ourselves to you with a set of fun fact questions.
So, here are my answers to the fast fact questions:
Favorite Coffee Order – Black tea sweetened with honey. Wait, that’s not a coffee? Oops. Well. that’s the closest I can get. I’m a tea girl.
Favorite Hymn or Worship Song – Oh, my goodness. I have soooo many. I come from an acappella hymn singing background, so give me the old-time hymns with rich harmonies, and I’ll sing anything you put in front of me. It Is Well With My Soul is a powerful hymn that gives me goosebumps every time. The writer in me also loves the hymn I Love to Tell the Story.
Writing Soundtrack – The Sound of Silence – No, not the Simon and Garfunkle song, thought I do love that one. I need actual silence to work. I’m very musically inclined, so music is far too distracting.
Where I Write Best – A few years ago, I finally turned one of the kids’ old bedrooms into an office, and I love it! I can close the door and create that silent bubble that spurs the words onto the page.

Favorite Summer Dessert – Ice cream! Intense chocolate is my favorite, but I like almost any flavor that doesn’t involve mint.
The opening paragraph from an upcoming book – Here are the opening lines from my brand new western fairy tale, Part of Your World. It releases June 16!
Galveston, Texas
June 1886
“Look, Mama! A mermaid!”
The child’s excited call snapped Muriel Quinn out of the mist of her daydreams like canon fire from a pirate ship. In a blink, she quit treading water and performed a surface dive to hide from the family standing on the pier by the Pagoda Bath House.
Daft girl. Gettin’ swept up in dreams and forgettin’ where ye be. If Da hears ye been swimmin’ near the rich folk’s beach agin, he’ll lock ye away fer good. Or worse. He’d spear her with one of his disappointed looks. The ones that came with a heavy exhale and sagging shoulders.

What is currently on my nightstand – I’m currently reading Jen Turano’s A Lesson in Propriety. I’m a sucker for a historical read with humor and quirky characters, and Jen is a favorite go-to author for me.

What about you?
What is your favorite summer dessert, and what are you currently reading?

Ice Cream is my favorite summertime dessert. I am reading Mine by Sami Abrams
Another ice cream lover! Yay!
My favorite dessert is ice cream! Simple chocolate or vanilla.
I am reading Lady Maybe and Lady of Milkweed Manor, both by Julie Klassen! Julie, you’re my hero! 😊💕
Excellent choices, Christian!
It is Well with my Soul is one of my favorite hymns too.
I am on vacation this week and when I return home my two books awaiting me are A Dare and a Prayer by Julie Lessman and East (The Hunt for Alan Martin) by Susan May Warren
My favorite summer dessert is watermelon! I eat it every day. I don’t eat prepared desserts normally. Only while on vacation.
Hymns are my spiritual love language, Nancy. 🙂 I’m glad you can relate. And you are so good choosing watermelon. My midsection would benefit from a few less prepared desserts. Ha!
I wondered how you would answer the coffee question! 😂 Those are two of my favorite hymns as well.
Ha! You know me well, D’Ann. 🙂
I recently learned how to make honeycomb ice cream and it’s fabulous, but you can’t really beat English strawverries – they’re a little softer and sweeter than the ones y’all have there.
Oh and I’m reading… PART OF YOUR WORLD!!!
Honey comb ice cream sounds like something I need to try. As well as English strawberries. Sounds like I need to plan a trip across the pond. 🙂 I hope you are loving Murial and Zane’s story!
Love your fast facts. Envy an office DOOR — my dream. Excited to Read The Little Mermaid in 1886. But then, when am I ever not excited to read anything you write?
Ha! That door makes all the difference. 🙂 Thank you for your kind words about my books, Susan. That made my day.
“It Is Well with My Soul” is a beautiful song, but I can’t listen to it without crying my eyes out. It was played at my sister’s funeral and at my mom’s and it stirs up so many memories of those times. Even so, it IS well with my soul, and I’m so grateful for all the truths that are in those lyrics!
I’ve loved reading all the favorites! Can’t wait to share mine!
I hear you, Deb. There are certain hymns that carry strong emotions for me too. I’ll never forget how my Mom broke down in church on Sunday when we sang Where No One Stands Alone a few weeks after my dad passed. I can’t sing that song without tearing up and thinking of both of them.
Wow, Karen! I’m a tea drinker too!
Worship song – I put down in an earlier response “How Great Thou Art”, but I love “It is Well with my Soul” too, and the story behind it. My husband’s last career was as a Methodist pastor before retiring in 2014. He sang in their choir and this song was their signature song. These two and “Amazing Grace” were sang at his funeral in 2023.
Favorite summer dessert is hot fudge sundae.
I’m not a writer, but I read in silence.
Excited for “Part of Your World”
Right now I’m reading “Taming Lady Temperance”.
Hooray for tea drinkers, Betty! And I love How Great Thou Art. Another goosebump song. All of those classic hymns fill my soul. I prefer reading in silence, too. 🙂 I hope you’re enjoying Noreen and James’s story. 🙂
It Is Well with My Soul is a beautiful hymn, and it’s my prayer and my declaration. A cappella is the best way to sing it! Love your answers.
Thanks, Robin. I’m so glad we’re getting the chance to learn about each other this way! Can’t wait to see your answers soon. 🙂
Thanks, Robin! I’m delighted we are getting to know each other better this way. Looking forward to seeing your responses soon. 🙂
I love your bookshelves in your beautiful office.
Ice cream is my favorite summer desert.
I took 2 of my small bedrooms one was my daughter’s bedroom and the other one was not used for a bedroom but had my sewing machine and a bookshelf or two. I made libraries out of both. I love my small libraries.
You have TWO libraries in your house! You’re my new hero, Brenda. 🙂
You have TWO libraries in your house! You’re my new hero, Brenda. 🙂 I hope to build a library in our front room. One of these days, we’ll get around to it.
I just finished The Missing Pages by Alyson Richman
Nice!
