It’s my pleasure to welcome my friend Susan Tuttle to Inspired by Life today! Every writer works tremendously hard in the years that come between that initial [I’m going to follow my dream and write a book!] inspiration and the moment when their debut novel actually releases. Susan’s debut novel is now available and it’s wonderful to see her effort and perseverance pay off. Stay tuned for giveaway details at the end of this post! -Becky
This past fall my older sister was married! I cannot tell you how incredibly exciting it was to finally watch her marry the love of her life. We’d been praying for this day for years, for this man to enter her life, and on September 15th, 2018 we had the joy of watching this dream of hers become a reality. She couldn’t have married a better man!
During this same season my debut, At First Glance, was coming closer to its release date. I’d actually written this book six years ago, far before my sister had even met her fiancée, so it was pretty amazing to watch unexpected similarities play out as both her wedding and my debut date grew closer.
For instance, it was my sister who helped me with my main character Penny’s love of perfume. She came over to my house one night with trays overflowing with tiny sample vials for me to indulge in. I received quite the education on perfumes that night, and it wove into the theme of this book as I wrote it. Penny uses scents to mark special memories, wearing a different one for each separate occasion. I found later that my sister does the same thing, and she’d even found one unique and lovely perfume to wear for her wedding day. This is her on that day helping my daughters choose their own perfect scent from her collection to wear for the ceremony.
A few other fun things were how Penny found herself attracted to this bald man … well, who knew that my sister’s fiancée would also be bald? Full disclosure, so is my hubby. In my book, Jonah has a very specific reason he is … but I’ll let you figure that out as you read it. Another fun fact is that my family does, indeed, call me Princess much like Penny uses that nickname for Belle. Though in my case, it’s not a bad thing (at least I think, lol).
Even with all the similarities, there is one huge difference: my sister and I get along. Sure, we’ve had rocky years, but we’ve always had each other’s backs. Being able to stand by her side as she married the love of her life was far better than writing the happily-ever-after for my fictional characters. It wasn’t only life imitating art, it was life far better than art.
Congratulations to Bev Knudsen, winner of the below giveaway!

When my mom married my step dad my grandma (mom’s mother) couldn’t hear the officiant and hollered, “Speak up sonny I can’t hear you!” Classic Grandma Ruth as we called her…lol.
Susan says
HA! Love this memory! Even more so because I had a Grandma Ruth too:)
Tish says
When a friend of mine got married she danced with her dad on his lap. He was in a wheelchair. It was beautiful.
Susan says
Oh goodness, I would have needed a box of Kleenex for this one. Daddy-daughter dances always get me to begin with…then this? Beautiful is right.
Vivian Furbay says
My daughter had a beautiful outdoor wedding at my parent’s home in black Forest just north east of Colorado Springs. The weather was beautiful around 75 degrees and sunny. Her Dad gave her away. A friend made her cake and her brother-in-law brought his great deviled eggs.
Susan says
YUMMY! And I love outdoor weddings. My sister’s that you see above was in her new home’s backyard that she now shares with her new hubby!
Melanie Backus says
Our wedding day was one of the happiest days of my life. I was not nervous at all. On the other hand, my husband said he was so nervous his knees literally knocked! Well, I didn’t hear them! We just celebrated our 43rd last month!
Susan says
43??!! That is AWESOME!! Congrats to you:)
Jessica Switzer says
Really fun post! Excited to read her book!
Susan says
Thanks so much, Jessica! It was a really fun day:)
Cathy A. says
When we knelt at the altar at our wedding 44 years ago, the joke was on my husband as someone had written “HE” on his left shoe and “LP” on his right. I’d love to win your book!
Susan says
Oh my goodness, LOL! I hope somebody got a picture of that:)
Cheryl H. says
I had a beautiful outdoor wedding at my brother-in-law’s plantation house. It was straight out of Gone With the Wind–except that my father-in-law had a walkman in his pocket and an earphone in his ear so he wouldn’t miss the Braves game. 😉 No joke. haha
Susan says
HA! Sports and men;) I LOVE plantations. Definitely not something we see a lot of up here in the North!
Anita Manning says
I married the love of my life 30 years ago. My mother made my dress. I wore a necklace my great-grandmother wore 100 years earlier for her wedding.
Susan says
How incredibly special! My sister’s soon-to-be sister-in-laws passed on a bracelet for her to wear that has been worn by all the brides in their family. Love those types of memories:)
Andrea Stephens says
My goodness, my wedding was a disaster. My little twin cousins were my flower girls were left at my house the night before, without their wedding clothes. I didn’t know they were spending the night. My aunt showed up late to the church with their dresses. My stepfather was late (he had a tee time). My groom was locked out of the church. He was told to come in the side door from outside. He waited for 30 minutes before a guest got up an opened the door! My mom was busy helping my cousins get dressed, instead of helping me with my hair. I didn’t have my make-up with me, thankfully a friend had some I could use. The music was played at the wrong time so I didn’t get to hear it. And to top it all off, my uncle, the photographer, forgot to put the film in the camera.
I didn’t want a wedding. I really wanted to elope, but I would have settled for going to the church with our parents and siblings. My mom was insistent that we have a wedding. 35 years later, I can look back and laugh. I still wish we would have eloped though.
Susan says
Love that you can look back and laugh! Weddings can be incredibly crazy:) Congratulations on 35 years!
Bev Knudsen says
I am not married but my twin brother and his wife got married in our church. I was a bridesmaid and our Grandpa was Best Man.
Susan says
Love that your grandpa was the Best Man!
Sherri G says
We had a very informal wedding. Our parents, my sister, his brother, my best friend and her husband were the only attendees. The local magistrate married us. My brother-in-law was the best man and we told him it was informal. He showed up without shoes. Since my best friend (my matron-of-honor) was pregnant, I laugh and say we had a barefoot and pregnant wedding. I’m still loving him after 28 years.
Susan says
HAHAHA! That is great! And 28 years … even better:)
Sarah says
My three year old daughter was given the honor of being the flower girl at my cousin’s wedding. It was beautiful in an outdoor chapel by the beach! My very young daughter, though, was overwhelmed and froze after a few steps down the aisle. My husband was the one who sprinkled flower petals that day!;)
Congratulations, Susan, on your novel! What a wonderful accomplishment! (And thank you, Becky, for sharing the news.)
Susan says
Thank you! And I love that your husband stepped in for your little girl–what father’s won’t do for their daughters:)
Jackie Smith says
Love this! I just heard of this book yesterday…would love to read it!
My wedding was long ago…on a tv show called Bride & Groom. We were married in New York City….quite an experience!
Thanks for your giveaway.
Susan says
You were married on a TV show??!! I bet it was an experience. What a great story to pass on:)
Kay Garrett says
My favorite memory of my wedding, other than all the obvious ones, is that Grandma was there. Hubby’s grandmother wasn’t able to travel and it was our great desire that she be a part of our wedding, so we moved our wedding location so she could be there. Several hundred miles apart in another state meant most of our planning was done by phone or with a sister doing the footwork for us. It all worked out great, was a fabulous and beautiful day and everything went off without a hitch. Seeing her sweet smiling face sitting front and center as we said our I do’s made all the extras very much worth it. By making her day, it made ours. Cherish the memories and the photos with Grandma with us on our special day.
Susan says
Family means so much, doesn’t it? I bet you made her day as much as your own! Love that you did that for her!
Jennifer Rumberger says
Thanks for the giveaway! Susan’s book is on my to-read list. A wedding memory for me would be when my oldest was a ring bearer for the first time. He was 2 at the time and not happy that he couldn’t stand with me up at the altar (I was a bridesmaid). After walking down the aisle with my hubby, they just kept right on walking up a side aisle and watched the wedding from the back of church. He was a pro the second time he was a ring bearer when he was 5! 🙂
Susan says
I bet he was adorable! My son wore a little tux when he was five and my brother-in-law got married. He looked like such a little man, I couldn’t believe it! Now he’s taller than me and all grown up!
Sharon Timmer says
My favorite memory from my Wedding was when the florist forgot to include the roses that we were supposed to give to our Mothers. Somehow my Brother-in-law knew what happened & unbeknownst to my husband & I he went & bought some in between the ceremony & our reception. It was a very sweet moment!
Susan says
What a great brother-in-law! I can definitely see why it’s such a great memory:)
Steph J. says
The Pastor that married my husband and I said put the ringer on her finger! Instead of put the ring on her finger! It was so funny!
My dad and brother also surprised me with lots of balloons in our car after the wedding!
Susan says
HA! That definitely made a statement:) And I LOVE balloons. I’ve ballooned someone’s car before. So much fun!
Tammi Taylor says
Would love to win a book and love hearts and pens!
Susan says
Thanks for stopping by!
Perrianne Askew says
My best wedding memory is that all of my grandparents were there except for my Grandad who passed away when I was in 8th grade. That included my Stepdads parents, so I had bonus grandparents that day as well. They have all passed away now but we have been married 29 years.
Susan says
Wonderful memories! Grandparents mean so much:)
Sheri says
One of the fondest memories of my wedding day was at the reception. As we waited in line (right next to the food buffet) to proceed into the reception, my neice who was four at the time stood by her Mama crying “please I want a grape”. Now 22 years later we often recount that memory of her. 🙂 It always makes us smile. I’m looking forward to reading the book.
Susan says
And now she’s all grown up! So many memories are made at weddings:) BTW, Hubby and I just celebrated 21 years – it goes by fast, doesn’t it?
Linda McFarland says
Love finding new authors. I guess it was a case of nerves but my husband and I started laughing and couldn’t stop no matter how hard we tried. Don’t remember what was funny or who started it. So much for a solemn occasion! Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Linda McFarland says
I think I put the wrong email address. It starts dmcfarl (not with an n). Thanks!
Susan says
The more you think “stop laughing” the more you laugh! But what a great memory it made for your wedding:)
Bonnie H says
I sang at a friend’s wedding, and in the heat the bride fainted and had to be taken out of the room to be revived. I had already sung the songs I had rehearsed, but the organist looked at me and said, “You have to sing!” And, with that, she began to play and I sang “Love, look at the two of us. Strangers in many ways…..” The bride did return, shortly after I finished the song.
Susan says
Oh no! I’m glad she was okay! And what a memory for you:)
Susanne says
When I was around 5 or 6, a lady in our church asked me to be her flower girl. That was very special to me!
Susan says
Little girls love weddings and getting to dress up for them! I bet you wore a “twirly” dress:)
Melissa says
A Special memory from my wedding is the fact my Uncle Marvin married my husband and I. He passed away from ALS about 2 and a half years after we married, so to have him preform our ceremony is a memory I will always treasure.
Susan says
Absolutely beautiful<3
MS Barb says
How exciting for your older sister to find a wonderful man! People used to tell my oldest daughter that she was too picky–I told her NO, she wasn’t too picky; to wait for the man God had for her…she did wait, and, she married a prince of a man, and she just had their 1st baby, @ age 39! My grandson is so handsome–looks like his daddy, and, has his mom’s stubborn streak! 🙂
Susan says
Absolutely! What great advice you gave your girl!Waiting for God’s timing never lets us down….it may require boatloads of patience, but He always gives us His best! Congrats to your daughter! And to you on that grand baby:)
Maranda says
Such an inspiring story! Weddings are such special and momentous occasions.
Susan says
Yes they are!
Amy M. says
I was a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding when I was a teen. At the reception I had sausage balls for the first time, and then they had me for several hours afterwards if you get my meaning. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one that was re-visited by them, and I’ve never eaten a sausage ball since!
Susan says
oh no! I’ve been there with stuffed mushrooms;) What a memory, lol.
Joan Arning says
My dad became bald in his early twenties so that’s all I remember! Nothing wrong with bald guys!
Susan says
Absolutely nothing:)
Miranda says
How neat that her life and your story played out so similarly!
I just heard about your book earlier this week and am looking forward to reading it!
Susan says
It was really cool to see happen:) And I hope you enjoy it!
Suzanne Cumbie says
I found out when 2 of my children got married that I have no control over my tears! Even though they were happy occasions I ugly cry! At my son’s wedding I cried all the way down the aisle as my husband escorted me and at my daughters wedding as I helped her dress. No control!
Susan says
LOL. I have found I can be a crier too. Those tears … they come from us but they are uncontrollable, aren’t they?
Angie Quantrell says
I married my best friend nearly 34 years ago. He didn’t use to be, but is now bald. If I admit it, my hair is quite a bit thinner, too… My mom made my wedding dress from white chintz (nontraditional, but I loved the sheen), my sister did my hair, my bridesmaids wore coral chintz homemade dresses. Wow, that sounds tacky, but it was gorgeous! My college roommate did the flowers, her first of many weddings as floral arranger. The altar arrangement was top heavy, unbeknownst to us, and as my sister and the best man walked back from lighting the candles, one of them brushed the flowers and WOP, they all toppled over. Oops! We only knew from people telling us. They were quick to set up and rearrange! Ahhh. The memories. Congrats on all the good news!
Susan says
Thank you! And what great memories:) I love that your mom made your dress!
Sarah F says
My sister had 10 bridesmaids in her wedding. Oy! What a day.
Susan says
10??!! I had 6 and thought that was a lot:)
Elizabeth Litton says
My older brother got married last September–the first of us seven kids to marry. I think the most special moment of ceremony was when the pastor asked both sets of parents to come up for a special time of prayer with the bride and groom.
Susan says
I LOVE that! Definitely a special time:)
Haley says
Congratulations to your sister!!! And I’m so excited to read your book! It looks so good! 🙂
Susan says
Thank you! I hope you like it:) And I’m SO happy for my sister!!
Shelli Littleton says
Congratulations on your book and to your sister. My sister had an incredible pianist play at her wedding. I didn’t think much of it because we’d grown up with the guy. I had no idea at the time that he would go on to change his name to Jaime Foxx.
Susan says
What? THE Jaime Foxx?? Nu-uh! What a cool story:)
Linda says
Congratulations on your new book – it looks like a great read! Today is my son and daughter-in-law’s 5th wedding anniversary! It was lovely and the homily is one I still go back and listen to – it was 20 minutes long which is longer than a lot of weddings but even the clock watchers didn’t mind. My daughter has now been married for 3 years and I was honored to walk her down the aisle . Great memories!
Susan says
Weddings do bring such great memories:) Love that you’re still listening to your son’s!
Raechel says
<3 I don't have a whole lot of experience with weddings, but my elder sister's wedding is full of fond memories. I was one of her bridesmaids, and it was a beautiful day. The rehearsal sticks out so clearly in my memory, as the reality began to sink in, and many tears and hugs were shared.
Special memories are the best!
Thanks for this giveaway – it's fabulous!
Susan says
🙂 Such special memories to share with family! It’s definitely a season-changing time.
Amanda T says
A fun memory from my wedding 16 years ago is when my youngest flower girl (age 2) saw the slideshow come on for pics at the reception, she yelled, “It’s the Scooby-do show!” 😂
Susan says
LOL! That is the best! I love kiddos at weddings:)
Pam says
She picked out such a pretty wedding gown. I’ve been married 36 years. The thing that stands out to me as I look back is I always wanted to sew my wedding dress. And, I did. it was nothing like what your sisters was but it was me through and through. We never had kids and I still have my wedding dress. I think we will be moving in the next year or so, and I don’t know what I should do with it. I’ll probably toss it which sounds horrible, but I don’t think I could make into anything else. Sorry this is so long, I haven’t thought about anything wedding related for a long time!
Susan says
Oh, I wonder if you could use the fabric and make a pillow or a handkerchief or even a table runner out of it? Something you could look at every day:) And I loved my sister’s dress–it was so completely her! That’s what I love about brides, seeing their own personality come out in their dress!
Doreen says
I really don’t have much of any wedding memories. 1 is when I was young and saw my cousin marry his first wife. I remember she wore a pink silk gown.
Susan says
I love pink! I bet it was beautiful:)
Candi F says
That is so cool how your book character & your sister has so many similarities! Had she read the book before she met her man? Just curious! 😉
As for the wedding memory, for my cousin’s outdoor wedding last fall we arrived and the weather was fine, then once the couple and attendants arrived at the outdoor stage (with a roof on it), it just started to downpour! Most people had brought umbrellas just in case, but not us. Thankfully someone loaned us theirs and we hunched under not hearing the ceremony for the rain pelting on the umbrella so loud, but it was fun!The couple left under a huge umbrella and we were all a bit damp for the indoor reception at another location, but what a memory! 🙂
Susan says
YES! What a memory and what good sports you are! As for my sister, nope. She didn’t read it until after her wedding:) I gave her an early copy at her bridal shower which was actually two days before her wedding. She took it with her on her honeymoon.
Megan L. says
That’s really neat how there are so many similarities between your sisters wedding and your book. I’m looking forward to reading your book. I don’t have many memories of weddings. I just remember one when I was younger that seemed to go on forever.
Susan says
HA! Yes, as a youngin’ those wedding ceremonies can seem forever, can’t they?
Patty says
As a bride who didn’t get married until she was 41, I enjoyed reading about Susan’s sister.
Leaving the church after the wedding (as a married woman) to head to the reception was wonderful! Our photographer captured that moment and I think it’s my favorite picture from the whole wedding.
Susan says
<3 Love this! It does make the day even more special, I think, when it's one you've waited even longer for. I absolutely loved my sister's wedding day having prayed for and believed with her that her perfect match was out there!
Amber Torres says
My father was in a coma for almost 2 years before my wedding. He got out of the hospital about 3 weeks before my wedding and had a TON of therapy to attend and medical appointments as I am sure you can imagine. He had to relearn how to do everything, including walk. He was still in a wheelchair on my wedding day and could hardly hold himself up in that without being strapped to the back of it. He was determined to “walk” me down the isle without that strap. My grandfather pushed him down the isle as he “wheeled” next to me. 🙂 When we got to the end of the isle he had to be strapped back in, but we were all proud of how far he had came and pushed to be there for that day! I will post a picture on your FB page because I can not figure out how to do it on here. 🙂
Susan says
Oh my goodness what an amazing memory! I’d love to see that!!
Andrea says
We got married at the end of October (just celebrated 18 years!) , and living in South Carolina, you NEVER know what the weather will do that weekend. The year we got married, it was in the 80s, so a couple of our guests changed their planned outfits at the last minute because it was hot! Then one year, we drove just an hour and a half up the road to North Carolina for an anniversary weekend–and to our shock, it snowed! It’s fun to see what the weather will do on that weekend from year to year! (But I loved having a sunshiney, 80-degree wedding day!)
Susan says
Living in Michigan, boy do I ever understand the weather changes:) Happy 18 years to you!!
Karen says
Susan, I’m a Michigander too! Much Mitten love to you! 😉 I’m so excited for you, and I’m glad that you’re close to your sister. I’m close to my siblings as well! Congrats on your debut novel! I can’t wait to read it!
Susan says
Thank you! And I”m waving my mitten to you as well;)
Kim Bakos says
My husband I got married in the drive-thru at the wedding chapel in Las Vegas!
Susan says
No way! I love this! What a memory:)
Connie Shaffer says
I love that bald headed men are featured in this book. My grandpa, dad and two favorite uncles were all bald And wonderful! I didn’t realize men had hair until I was well into school age. My bald and beautiful daddy gave me away at my wedding 47 years ago.
Susan says
Ohhh…I just love that:) And yes! I think bald men are incredibly handsome–I may be biased but I believe it to be true!
Elizabeth Lickliter says
My favorite part of weddings is seeing if the ring bearer and flower girls will actually make it up the aisle without incident. I’ve never been to a wedding where it went off without a hitch 🙂
Susan says
Lol. This is so true, and it makes for some of the cutest moments:)
amy guillaume linderman says
my reception was in a barn type restaurant…i loved that each table ate family style….we got the idea from the way we eat in the dining hall at our church camp…no long lines at a buffet!
Susan says
What a neat idea! And no long lines…I bet your guests loved that:)
Beth Pugh says
My husband spent the time he should have been getting dressed to tack up my all balloon archway that had deflated over night with fishing twine so I wouldn’t cry and mess up my make-up ❤️
Susan says
That is one good man:) Such a sweet memory.
Janet Putney says
Thank you for your blog… I loved reading it….sisters share a special bond!!! I can’t wait to read that book.In my sister’s wedding the best man actually tied the rings to the ringleader pillow and had a hard time getting them undone…😊😊😊😊
Susan says
Hahaha! Oh the memories. And sisters do, don’t they? Ups and downs throughout the years, but always there for one another<3
Linda R Orr says
We had to change our wedding date a couple of weeks before the ceremony. The church was still available, but the fellowship building was not for the reception. My wonderful mother took over and moved everything to our house and gave us a beautiful outdoor reception. I’m glad it actually worked out that way because now I have not only pictures of my parents (who are now gone), but of them with our home in the background.
Susan says
Oh, that is wonderful! See, sometimes those changes make for the best memories:)
Kristi S says
I remember going to visit my grandpa between my older sister’s wedding and reception- he was too sick to come and loved seeing a of us (the whole wedding party went, which included cousins). He passed away shortly after that, so it’s one of my last memories of him ❤️
Susan says
I LOVE this because we did the same thing with my grandfather and it’s one of my favorite memories:)
Sarah Evankovich says
Congratulations to your sister from one 2018 bride to another.
Susan says
Congrats to YOU! Happy wedding year:)
Melissa Andres says
Some good friends of ours got married about 4 1/2 years ago and it was the first wedding I’d been to where Jesus truly seemed to be the center of the wedding. The “message”, the songs sung, the vows, the prayers…everything, was all about Jesus! It was beautiful and moving and unforgettable! The best part, they were only 18 and 19. What a joy to see two people starting their lives together on the right foot!
Susan says
Absolutely beautiful. Love their hearts:)
Eva North says
I remember, at my wedding almost 9yrs ago, my father in law was battling last stages of stage 4 colon cancer, family friends from Jackson, MI, were up for the wedding and being it was only at the courthouse, the guys (dad and Joe) got lost, arrived in the middle of the ceremony and left a bit early from the reception. As they got there, I heard,”did we miss anything”? Dad apologized for missing it, but it was his idea to get married close to the date we did. Mom and dad’s anniversary is April 19th, my birthday, and now anniversary, is April 23rd, the 19th that year was a Monday, my birthday wasn’t and I’m glad we got married then, because June 2,2010, the year we got married, he passed.
Susan says
So glad you have those memories, Eva:) <3
Suzanne Sellner says
One of my favorite wedding memories revolves around my husband’s suit that he wore at our wedding. Since he worked for a men’s clothing company at the time, he had selected his suit long before the wedding date, had had it altered, and placed it in a special spot in the factory. When he intended to take his suit home the day before the wedding, it was nowhere to be found. One of the factory workers said that an undertaker had been in the factory and purchased a number of suits–perhaps my husband’s wedding suit. So, he had to do a rush job on selecting another suit and having it altered. It made a good story after the wedding.
Susan says
AH! I can only imagine his momentary panic, and the laughter now at the memories:)
Faith Creech says
I love weddings. They are so beautiful and fun. We got married 40 years ago and it was a beautiful wedding. It was so long ago that it’s hard to remember the details.
Susan says
🙂 40 years is something to celebrate! You may not remember many of the details, but I bet one is the amazing groom standing at the end of that aisle<3
Bernie says
When my husband put on a skit for our wedding reenacting our whole dating experience for 10 years.
Sara beth williams says
That sounds awesome!
Susan says
Oh. my. goodness. That is amazing!
Laura M says
The last of five sisters got married in January. She was determined to have outdoor pictures – in 9 degree weather!! Only the wedding party had to walk into a snowy field for those perfect pictures, but it completed her day! Brrrr!
Susan says
What we won’t do for a bride;) I bet those pictures ARE amazing!
Jolyn says
Fun to find out about a new author!
Susan says
🙂 Glad you’re here!
Julie Jobe says
Loved reading a bit about your sister’s story and seeing some wedding pics. I love looking at wedding pics! Congrats on the book! I love the premise and I have added it to my TBR list! As for a wedding story, the only one that pops to mind is the story of my husband’s little brother being the ring bearer in a wedding and dropkicking the pillow he carried during the ceremony. Thankfully, the rings weren’t actually on the pillow.
Susan says
HA! Yes. I couldn’t imagine having to go find them as they’d roll away:) And thank you for adding AFG to your TBR pile!
Mary Ann says
My favorite wedding memory is a small wedding on the coast with only 30 people. The venue was gorgeous, the other guests were fun, and the food was scrumptious. It was just perfect.
Susan says
Sounds beautiful … and delicious:)
Ola Norman says
Loved reading about your sister’s wedding.
Susan says
Thanks! It was a wonderful day!
Alisha Brown says
When my baby sister got married my brother in laws fakily was a little more reserved then we are and when they shared there first kiss as man and wife my family all started hooping and hollering and my brother in laws family almost fainted dead out. To this day we still laugh about it, they still think we are a little to redneck for their taste
Susan says
HAHAHA! Oh, I relate. My family is … less than reserved. The picture I shared above took several takes before we were finally all standing (some had been lying in front on the ground), and looking at the camera with somewhat normal faces. Even then you’ll see one of my brothers has quite the sense of style;)
Sara Beth says
The day before my younger brother was supposed to get married in 2011, the timing belt went out on our only car and I lived 4 Plus hours away from where he was going to get married. I was 8 months pregnant. My husband and I couldn’t afford for 2 to take the train, so I booked one ticket for me and got into town at midnight. My best friend’s dad is a train engineer so he gave me a ride home. Then I rode with her family to the wedding.
Susan says
Wow! That is a story of perseverance! I love family:)
Teri DiVincenzo says
I wanted to come up with a way to involve the special couples in our life when my hubby and I got married. We put the names of all the couples that had RSVPed to our wedding in a fishbowl, and the DJ pulled a name out every time the guests clinked their glasses for us to kiss. Then the older couple got to show us how it was done! We have awesome videos of aunties and uncles, special family friends, etc “showing us the ropes”, many whom are no longer with us.
Susan says
I love that idea! I’m going to save it for when my kids start getting married … one far day down the road;)
Katie Andersen says
We went canoeing for some of our pictures and some of those are my favorites!

Goodness, I would have fallen in! But I bet they’re beautiful pictures:)

My grandparents were there. They are both deceased now. I miss them dearly.

My own wedding, I am happy to say, was perfect. No unexpected hiccups. Our oldest son’s wedding was quite memorable. Our younger daughter fainted in the middle of the ceremony and I spent most of the event in the back hallway of the church with her. 🙂
Susan says
Oh no! Yes, very memorable indeed!

My brother and his fiancée had planned to get married at a park in a gazebo. It snowed and there was ice, so they frantically moved it to a hotel. Who would of ever thought that there would be snow and ice in March in Texas!
SUsan says
Not I! That is crazy! Now up here in Michigan? We wouldn’t be surprised even in May:)

This book sounds wonderful! Thanks for the give-away!

Forgot to share my wedding memory! For the pastor who was performing the ceremony, this was his first wedding. He was very nervous and forgot to ask my dad the “Who gives this woman”question! My dad never got to formally give me away, but just quietly sat down after we had said our vows. The pastor never forgot this and mentioned it many times at other wedding rehearsals! My mom played the organ for our church so heard him relate this story to many couples. Now 45 years later, we are still happy and blessed by the love God has given us for each other!
Susan says
🙂 Oh, that poor pastor and your poor dad! But what a memory it made, and I love that you can smile over it:)

I didn’t see this during the ceremony, but when we watched the video later, we laughed at my sister-in-law looking like she was doing the chicken dance during prayer! As it turned out, she was trying to get my little sister to not lock her knees on the platform. I have no idea if anyone actually saw her do that during the prayer.
Susan says
HA! I bet you still laugh over that one!
Cynthia St. Germain says

One of my best friends was my matron of honor and her three year old twins were my flower girl and ring bearer. We had their grandmother planted at the front of the church in case there was a meltdown during the ceremony. They got down the aisle with no problem, but as soon as the flower girl saw her grandmother, she yelled Mamaw at the top of her lungs. Everyone in the church laughed and any nervousness I was feeling was gone! 😊
