Just in time for Thanksgiving!
If you’re looking for down-home, delicious Southern Cooking, meet Tammy of Collard Valley Cooks in South Georgia!
Delightful. Unpretentious. And a fabulous Southern Cook. That’s Tammy (and Chris, her husband, who does the videoing)!
I don’t exactly remember when I ran across Tammy’s YouTube channel. It’s been a while. But every recipe I’ve tried of hers is absolutely delicious, and Southern through and through.
I’ve made many a Chicken Pot Pie through the years but hers is by far the best—and easiest—I’ve made. The homemade white gravy (don’t let that scare you—remember, I said it’s EASY) takes it over the top!
Kelsey and I made Tammy’s recipe this weekend and oh my gracious . . .
If your cast iron skillet’s feeling a little neglected and you or someone you love is craving something comforting and creamy, this Chicken Pot Pie is the answer! Grab the recipe (and watch the tutorial) for Tammy’s Collard Valley Cooks Chicken Pot Pie!
Check out Tammy’s videos on Youtube:
Tammy has a special holiday series too. It’s full of old-fashioned recipes your mother and grandmother used to make. Down-home cookin’ to the max. Some of the recipes are definite splurges which makes them perfect for the holidays.
So what’s on your Thanksgiving menu for next week?
Ours is definitely Southern . . .
So what are your Thanksgiving plans this year? Are you gathering with family and friends? Are you hosting or headed to someone’s house? Are you doing the bulk of the cooking or does everyone divide and conquer?
Also, if you’ve lost a loved one this year and this is your first Thanksgiving and Christmas without them, know that you’re not alone. The “first” holidays are always difficult. While the popular Christmas song may espouse “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!“—and we do have much to celebrate in Christ (all year long)—it’s also a difficult time of year. We dearly miss loved ones gone on before us, and those empty places at the table turn our hearts toward Home. So if this describes you, please know you’re not alone. And feel free to leave a comment so we can pray for you as a community as we head into the holidays!
Love from my corner of Nashville,
Tammy

Oh, thank you for this! I remember watching my grandma make fried apple pies, and have searched for the recipe online–but the new ones are all too “woke” (aka ‘healthy’) and they’re not like Grandma made. THIS video is the one grandma made, and they were delicious (as a treat, not a daily diet!) LOL! Thanks for the heads up about this lovely lady!

Exactly, Angie. A treat, not a daily diet! 😉 And they are…DELICIOUS. And “freeze beautifully,” as they say in Steel Magnolias. Enjoy!

Very scrumptious post! This year I am heading to my nephew’s house. I am making deviled eggs, cornflake potatoes, and pink salad.
Your menu sounds delicious. Happy Thanksgiving!

Okay, wait, Betty! Cornflake potatoes? Do tell?! I’m going to have to google that. Hope you all have a wonderful time together.

Okay, I got this recipe a long time ago when we were stationed on the island of Cyprus and attended endless dinner parties, resulting in a lot of my best recipes.
You start with cold mashed potatoes. Form a ball of potatoes around a cube of cheddar cheese (approx 1 inch square). Roll potato ball in crushed corn flakes, dip in melted butter, then back in cornflakes. Place in baking dish. I fit 9 in an 8×8 Pyrex dish. Bake at 350 for approx 20 minutes so cheese melts and corn flakes are crispy. Voila!

Are you kidding me?? Oh my, I need to try this sometime during the holidays, Betty. Joe would love it! Thanks!

We have an orphan holiday every year. This started 43 years ago when several of our friends who came to CO from other places missed families far away. We raised our families together and formed an orphan family. Some people came and went over the years but several families continue. I host Thanksgiving and cook Turkey, dressing and pie. We eat lots of other things and since some of the ‘orphans’ are from other cultures we often have curry and Asian dishes as well.

How I love this, Jen. What a blessing. And talk about the fabulous blends of cultures and foods. Prayers for a wonderful time with treasured family and friends!
