Loving Louisville

November 13, 2019 By Dani Pettrey

Hi friends,

Excited to be back with you all today! Happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well so far. If you’re waiting for the weekend, you’re halfway there. Yay!

Last week my hubby and I traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for his semi-annual work conference. We had been to Louisville once before when our daughter was shooting (archery) in the National Championship, but that was many years ago and we were busy with the tournament the entire time.

Mike was busy with his conference and I was busy finishing up my revisions for The Crushing Depths, but we found a little time each day to sneak out and explore—sometimes just in the gorgeous Brown Hotel.

My cozy writing nook for the week!

The gorgeous lobby of The Brown Hotel

The hotel had amazing artwork.

Our first outing was to the Louisville Slugger museum. My husband grew up playing and admiring baseball, so he was like a kid in a candy store. Especially when he got to swing one of Babe Ruth’s bats.

I had the joy of enjoying lunch and tasting the original Hot Brown with sweet friends Carrie and Nancy.

Last but not least. I FINALLY found it. The 24-hour Starbucks!!!!! In Louisville airport. If I ever get a chance of choosing my layover city, I bet you can guess which one I’ll be choosing.

Reader Question:

What is the last new place you’ve visited? What was the best thing you got to do, taste, or see there?

Look forward to hearing about your adventures!

Have a blessed week,

Dani

Loved your pictures and your trip! The last place I went was a day trip a few years back to a state fair. It was a fun, spur of the moment trip & included my mom–who surprised us all a few months later when she suddenly passed away–making that fun day golden. Blessings!

The last place I visited was Nashville (last week) where I got to see some amazing books win Christy Awards. I’d previously only ever gone through the airport on a layover and this was a super quick trip. I’d like to go back to see some things in the area.

Last month my husband had to go to Phoenix for work, and I went with him. While he was working I went to the Hall of Flame Fire Museum (fascinating!) and the Desert Botanical Garden-beautiful! We stayed an extra day and drove up to the Grand Canyon, only had a few hours there, but it was worth it! I also got to have some Dutch Bros. coffee, something we don’t have locally. Yum

That sounds like an awesome time. Oooh. Dutch Bros. coffee. Haven’t tried it….yet!

My last new place to visit was Victoria, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia! My sister took me plus her daughter and daughter-in-law. It was a fantastic trip, one I would go on again if the opportunity comes! Buchart Gardens and butterfly house, high tea at the Pendray, the ferry boat trip over from Seattle – it was all amazing!

Fun trip! We visited the area years ago when our son graduated from Army basic. My big adventure was seeing Churchill Downs. I love horses. Loved it.

We didn’t make Churchill Downs. I’m so bummed. Definitely need another trip there.

The last new place we visited recently was the Transylvania area in Romania. The first 5 days we in a rural town at the base of the Carpathian Mountains. Watching the shepherds and their dogs taking the sheep to the fields and witnessing the rural simple life was a real treat! The food was excellent, and the people are gracious. Each small village had a gleaming white church steeple amount the checkered patchwork of crops covering the rolling hills. We traveled on to tour castles, monasteries, and 12th century citadels. Romania is a must see!

I was in that Starbucks on Monday!Wish our paths had crossed. Louisville has a comfortable airport (from my somewhat limited perspective). It is easy to navigate.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Louisville. As a Kentucky resident, I have visited many times and love to go to concerts at the Louisville Palace just a block from the Brown Hotel.

That’s so cool. I was there on Monday too. We landed at 11:30 pm and I was so excited to see Starbucks open. Enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate.

Forgot to mention, I was leaving sunny Kentucky for Minneapolis, Minnesota where it was considerably colder on Monday. I’ll be back through Louisville Thursday afternoon. I’ll be passing right by that Starbucks. I might just stop by in your honor.

Ah. So you were there *this* Monday. I was there last Monday. Yikes. Minnesota is so cold. Hope you enjoy a Starbucks there on the way home.

Juneau, Alaska, to visit our daughter! She’s working at Mendenhall Glacier with the US Forestry Service, and watching her work and meeting her co-workers was a highlight, as well as the whale cruise we took the day before we left. Standout tastes: fresh-caught Alaskan salmon prepared at her apartment and Russian pelmini (dumplings) right on Gastineau Channel.
