I confess I am a worrier. I know we are not supposed to worry. That we are supposed to pray and trust. But that’s difficult to do I think, especially as Moms. I thought things would be easier now that our sons are both over 18, but there always seems to be something new to worry about. Some new problem, some new situation, some new risk. I remind myself that I gave my parents plenty to worry about at that age, too. But somehow the risks today just seem…riskier. (Maybe our parents thought the same thing at the time…?) Whatever the case, I’ve been collecting verses to help me overcome worry and fear. (I’m also using an app called Scripture Typer on my phone to try to memorize scripture during those appointment waiting times instead of my old default, checking FB.)
Here are 10 Verses that I’ve found (or friends have shared with me) in recent days. Any to add? Any other advice for those of us who struggle with worry?
10 Verses To Remember When Worry Is Winning
- Philippians 4:6-7 (My favorite!)
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- Psalm 143:8
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.
- Isaiah 26:3
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
- Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
- Psalm 118:6-7
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
- John 14:27
Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.
- Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
- Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
- 1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.
- Psalm 34:4
I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.
I just ordered this book and can’t wait to receive it. I also really love this song and have its chorus running through my mind: “I’m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.” Give a listen.
Are you prone to worry, too? If so, you probably long for peace and rest as I do. Let’s ask God to help us replace those fearful “what if’s” with words of truth. He loves us and He loves our children. Hang in there, Moms!

I think parenting young adults is the hardest phase of parenting . . the risks are higher and the mistakes are life altering. My two are in their early 20s and some days I am totally on the brink of anxiety . . . so I can totally relate. Love these Scriptures.

Great verses, Julie! We never stop being moms, do we? I remember so clearly when I was worrying about one of my grown-and-away-at-college kids, and the Lord very clearly impressed on me that I had done everything in my power to teach my kids everything they needed to live their lives in Christ. That part of my mothering was over but I still had one important job as a mom: PRAY for my kids. Daily. Hourly, if necessary. But simply pray and leave the rest up to Him.

Thank you for these verses Julie. I listened to the song also. Very peaceful and assuring.

I am definitely a worrier! But like you, I’ve found that both prayer and memorizing scripture help turn my mind to truth to override my worry. (Or at least beat it back a bit!) Thanks for sharing!

This verse was mentioned in Susan May Warren’s book “Rescue Me” and I’ve locked onto it every since.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2 New King James Version (NKJV)

Wonderful scripture verses to remember, because as humans I think it is hard to stop worrying – small children, teenagers, grown children, and now grandchildren.
I love the entire section in Matthew 6:25-34, especially the part beginning, “Consider the lillies of the field…”

Jeremiah 29:11 is my go-to verse: “For I know the plans I have for you, plans for good, and not for evil, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
