My Week as a Beach Bum (and a giveaway!)

August 9, 2019 By Becky Wade

I spent the last week of July very happily marooned on the Caribbean island of Anguilla with my family. I have photos to share!

We travel to Anguilla each summer so that my husband can serve as a volunteer coach with his favorite non-profit — The Anguilla Tennis Academy. The academy provides instruction year-round. They’ve both sent kids to college and provided jobs on Anguilla in the tennis industry.
My oldest designed this cute shirt for the Academy. They sell it in resort gift shops!
Anguilla is formed of volcanic rock. It’s relatively flat, dry, and scrubby. That particular geology makes for some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.
The water is an unbelievable shade of turquoise.
This is our transportation to our lunch restaurant one day.
And here’s our lunch once we reached our destination. We ate seafood every day!
A selfie of me, while out on a dictation walk. I continued to write while on the island, so I wasn’t technically 100% beach bum. I was 85% beach bum. In such a stunning location, and with so many hours per day to rest, writing felt like fun.
My three.
We had a fantastic week! It was fabulous because of the setting but also because we had TIME. Time for long meals together. Time for His Highness to serve and for me to do a little writing. Time to lay on the beach. Time to read. Time to watch sunsets. Time to sleep and relax, and breathe.
Until next year, beautiful Anguilla.

This blog post is full of oceanside photos and, before I go, I’m excited to tell you about a giveaway with an ocean tie-in. 🙂 Over on my web site, my sweet friend and fellow IBL blogger Dani Pettrey is giving away a set of bookends and three of her novels! Did you know that her newest release, The Killing Tide, features the Coast Guard?

Have you visited a beach this summer? If so, which one?

Not this year. We live a long way from any beach. We do go, just not every year.
This year we went to some of the nation’s parks and loved it.

I’d really like to visit more of our national parks! There are so many treasures to be discovered in those parks. We went to the Grand Canyon this year and had a great time.

Being from land-locked Kansas, beaches fascinate me. Your trip sounds absolutely wonderful and such great family time! Memories your kids will never forget!

I grew up in California, close the beach. So living in Dallas, far from the beach, can be a bit of a challenge for me at times. We try to make our way to a coastline at some point every year!

My sister and I we visited the Wikki beach in Hawaii this summer. It was so beautiful. It’s a place that I definitely want to go back again.

I visited VA Beach two weeks ago with my best friend, her daughter, and granddaughter. I hadn’t been to the beach for 25 years.

It sounds like you were due a visit to the beach, Lucy!

Beautiful! Love the long-term relationships you have made. Washington state beaches are not the same…and the water is definitely colder. But that’s where we love to visit each summer. 🙂

The Pacific Ocean water is chilly! But those Washington state beaches are gorgeous, too, in their unique way.

I live 2 hours away from the west and east coast beaches of Florida.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been to the beach in years.
The last time I did go was with my 2 sisters.
We went to Daytona and had a blast!

It’s such fun to visit the beach with sisters!

I live in Virginia Beach, 8 miles from the ocean front, but we haven’t been in years. When our children were young we went all the time. The last beach I went to was Mother’s Beach in Long Beach, Ca., last summer when visiting my daughter and 10 year old grandson.

    Your trip looks amazing!

Yes! We spent about 2 hours at the beach in Seaside, Oregon. Not nearly enough time, but long enough for my 5-year-old niece to actually remember it! It was cold and rainy, but still fun!
