This is a big week for me! On Tuesday, October 7th, my latest book releases: Rescued Heart, the Story of Sarah. It’s not only a new book, it’s the first book in a new series, and I’m super excited about it.
As most of you know, for about the last three years I’ve been worshipping at a Messianic Synagogue in my town. Worshipping there has given me an entirely new perspective on the Old Testament, particularly on the women of the Old Testament. The Jews, you see, have ancient books that Christians never read. They’re not Scripture, so they haven’t been protected by the Spirit of God, and they’ve been passed down for hundreds of years. One of them is the Book of Jasher, which is actually mentioned in the Bible, but claims to be the writings of Jasher, not by someone who was inspired by God himself (as Moses was).
The Book of Jasher is not inerrant–it sometimes contradicts the Bible, and sometimes contradicts itself, but it does offer a wealth of stories that could be historical. Some of them undoubtedly are, and the other stories could certainly be used in a novel which is, after all, fiction.
What does the Bible tell us about Sarah? Not much, when you think about it. She’s a bit player in Abraham’s story, and she only speaks ONCE in recorded scripture. But I knew she had a history, and I knew it had to be interesting. How did she feel when Abram called her “sister” instead of “wife”–on two separate occasions? How did she handle being barren when everyone around her was having babies, and how did she feel when she had a baby when she was NINETY years old? I mean, have you ever really thought about it?
How did she handle being so beautiful that when she was NINETY, another king, Abimelech, took her into his harem? She must have been one gorgeous woman! And how did she feel when she learned that Abraham, the man she loved, was going to sacrifice their only son, the one for whom she waited decades?
That’s what I explored in Rescued Heart: the Story of Sarah, which leads directly to Righteous Heart: the story of Rebekah, which leads directly to Resolute Heart: the story of Leah. Rebekah is finished and probably heading to the printer soon, and I’m finishing up Leah’s book in October, Lord willing.
All three of these women have amazing historical stories that I’m pretty sure you’ve never read . . . and oh, what they went through. I hope you’ll find the time to read Sarah, and appreciate what these matriarchs of our faith suffered and enjoyed as they laid the foundation of the Jewish people, including our Messiah.
Happy October!
Angie
