Searching for Pitcher Plants

July 15, 2015 By Lenora Worth

Happy Wednesday. I’ve had a quirky week so I thought I’d just take a little vacation with all of you before I head out on a road trip to the RWA (Romance Writers of America) Conference. Let’s start with a nice image of a peaceful place.

This was taken on a river near where we live in Florida. Quite and beautiful and out in the middle of nowhere. My husband wanted to find some of the illusive pitcher plants so on another trip like this one, we were again out in the middle of nowhere looking for these little orchid-like plants that grow in the swamps. It was hot and we went on a rather long hike that involved bugs, weeds, and me whining for water. Weeks later, as we were driving on a familiar road that we use almost every day, I glanced over into the ditch and saw hundreds of pitcher plants. Right there near our home! We’d never noticed them before.

I think this is a case of not seeing the forest for the trees! Sometimes, the things we need to see are right there in front of us but we’re so busy searching “out there” in the world that we just don’t notice what we already have. So I don’t have a good picture of the pitcher plant but I do have a memory that always makes me laugh and makes me remember to thank God for what is right there in front of me.

Hope you have a great Wonderful Wednesday. Look for something you haven’t noticed before!

Lenora, what a great example! How many times do I drive right by the very thing I am diligently hunting for? A great reminder to keep my eyes open.

Pitcher plants! I love wildflowers, especially finding rare ones (and pitcher plants are not all that common in MN). I’ve only seen them one time, on a visit to a friend where we took the boardwalk in the state park. Right off the raised planks – dozens of them, intermixed with showy lady’s slippers and Arethusa orchids. It was beautiful. And naturally I had no camera.

They are pretty, Rachal. They like to hang with lady slippers. I’ll try to find a picture for y’all next time I post. I think my husband took a couple.

Well, you got me so curious, Lenora, that I had to look them up. I HOPE these are not the kind you have growing near your house: http://proof.nationalgeographic.com/2015/01/28/the-living-breathing-world-of-borneos-carnivorous-pitcher-plants/ But they are fascinating plants. I don’t think even the tamer varieties grow in Kansas, but I hope I get to see one in person some day!

So great to have you here in the blog!

Thanks, Deb. I’m happy to be here. No, the ones we saw were not that big. They are about a foot or two in height and very dainty. Pretty purples and pinks 🙂 They do love swamps and moist soil. I see them all the time now and I always smile 🙂
