Hi friends and happy Wednesday! I’m so excited to have my friend and fellow author, Kelly Goshorn, sharing today while I’m on deadline crunch. I know you’ll love her fun post. See you next time. Praying you all have a blessed day!
There’s something wonderfully comforting about being surrounded by books. Their beautiful covers, well-loved pages, and familiar stories create a sanctuary for the mind and soul. Each spine holds stories that have shaped us—novels that carried us to new worlds, devotionals that strengthened our faith, and Bibles whose pages are softened by years of study and prayer. For readers, books aren’t just possessions—they’re companions, teachers, and reminders of where we’ve been and what we’ve learned along the way.
But let’s be honest—sometimes our beloved collections can get a little out of hand. Stacks form on nightstands, new additions perch precariously on top of old favorites, and suddenly we’re digging through piles to find that one book we promised we’d lend to a friend.
When my book collection reached this stage of disorganization, I convinced hubby to purchase some used bookshelves for me on Facebook Marketplace as a combo Mother’s Day/Birthday gift. I had so much fun organizing all my fiction books in one place, I thought I’d share a few simple and cozy ways to bring both beauty and order to your literary space.
1. Start with a Purpose
Before you rearrange a single shelf, pause and consider the purpose behind your collection. Are you building a reference library for Bible study? Curating your favorite Christian fiction authors? Or simply gathering stories that uplift and inspire? Maybe you want your devotionals front and center, or your historical fiction grouped by era. Defining your “why” helps shape how you sort, display, and interact with your books.
2. Choose Your System

There’s no one “right” way to organize your books—only what works best for you. Here are a few ideas:
- By Genre or Theme: Keep all your Christian fiction, devotionals, and biographies together for easy browsing.
- By Author: A great choice if you follow certain writers faithfully.
- By Color: Create a rainbow effect that adds warmth and beauty to your space.
- By Emotion or Season: Shelve stories that comfort you during tough times or rotate favorites to match the seasons—cozy classics in autumn, romances around Valentine’s Day, or Christmas reads in December.
Whatever system you choose, make sure it helps you find what you love quickly and adds joy to the process.
3. Make It Personal
Bookshelves can be both useful and beautiful. Add small touches that make your unique to you:
- A candle with your favorite seasonal scent
- A small plant or vase of dried flowers
- A photo of a friend that reminds you of a cherished memory
- A small cross or framed Scripture verse
- Seasonal lights hung with clear Command hooks
- A Bible or journal on an easy-to-reach shelf for daily quiet time
- Display books that mean something to you—your grandmother’s Bible, a signed copy from a beloved author, or the first devotional that touched your heart
- A mug or basket filled with extra bookmarks
These details turn your shelves into a reflection of your heart as much as your passion for reading.

4. Make Space for the New
If your shelves are overflowing, consider setting aside a “to-be-read” shelf or basket. Rotating books seasonally or donating ones you’re unlikely to reread keeps your collection fresh. Sharing gently used books with a friend, a “Little Free Library” in your neighborhood, or your church library can also bless others with stories that encouraged you.
A Word of Blessing
Books are more than paper and ink—they’re companions on our journey of faith. Organizing them thoughtfully can transform your shelves into a reflection of both your mind and heart. As you arrange your shelves and tidy your stacks, may your heart find peace in the process. May your library be a haven of truth, imagination, and joy—a space where stories remind you of the greater Story God is writing in your life.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” – Colossians 3:16
Lord, bless the library of every visitor to this blog. May the books that line our shelves stir wisdom, hope, and wonder. And may every page turn our hearts toward You—the Author and Finisher of our faith. Amen.

Love these tips, Kelly—and your beautiful fallish bookshelves. Thanks for joining us today, friend.
Such a fun post, Kelly. Thanks for the tips!
Organizing books is so fun! Thanks for all the tips.
About a year ago we boxed up all our books when we purchased new carpet. They are still boxed up because we plan to install some custom shelves in our front room to create a home library. However, life has been a whirlwind, and we haven’t gotten around to doing anything in that front room yet. One of these days (hopefully before another year rolls around), I’m going to have many wonderful shelves to fill. I’ll need to bookmark this blog with your advice, Kelly. 🙂
I’m late chiming in, but I loved this post! Great ideas and I felt cozy and warm just reading the ideas!
