In all my years of writing and publishing books, I’ve never been invited to give a TV interview. Until now!
Texas Today is a local lifestyle show that airs on NBC here in Dallas/Fort Worth. One of their producers reached out and asked me to visit and chat about the topic of balancing motherhood and writing. It was clear that he’d found inspiration for the segment in this post that I shared on Inspired by Life back in June. I told him I’d love to come on their show. That was followed by two thoughts. 1) I need to get my roots colored! 2) What am I going to wear?
He’d let me know that “bright, solid colors” look best on camera. So I opened my closet and realized that I have plenty of solid colored items that aren’t bright. And plenty of bright colored items that aren’t solid. Clearly, this situation called for some shopping!

I have never owned or worn anything this color before. Let alone this color in faux leather. But I really like this dress and had a great time wearing it to the station. Every one of the three people I chatted with there mentioned my dress. So did the girl at the coffee shop I stopped at afterward. I guess it’s hard to have a conversation with someone wearing this shade of green and NOT remark upon it. 🙂
- I took the above photo at home and it’s the only one I have because the station does not allow guests to take photos. The producer took a photo on her phone that they’ll send to me.
- They’ll air the interview at some point over the next 1-2 weeks. After that, the interview will be viewable online.
- I stumbled over my words once and repeated myself once but, overall, I think (hope) I did okay?
- It was FASCINATING to visit a real life TV station which looked very much like what I was expecting based on TV shows and movies.
- One thing that wasn’t what I expected–the fact that it felt as though the host and I were the only two people in the studio. There were lots of cameras and lots of lights but no other people that I could see or hear. So I assume they operate the cameras remotely from a separate area.
- Everyone at the studio was very friendly, welcoming, and amazingly efficient. They got me in, mic’d up, and through the interview in no time.
Today, I’m back to working at home alone in yoga pants, but I’m still smiling from yesterday’s adventure. That was so exciting. New. Different. A challenge. A little nervewracking. But ultimately, a lot of fun. I’m glad I did it!
Have you ever been on TV? (The last time I was on TV I was 5, celebrating with my mom and dad when they won episodes of Family Feud.)

How exciting!! I have no doubt you did great. I look forward to watching online.
Side note…our son in law, Pat Doney,
is a sports broadcaster for NBC Dallas. A few years ago my husband and I toured the studio where he works and got to sit behind the news desk. We also pretended we were doing the weather in front of a green screen. Such fun!
Oh my goodness! So I must have been at the same station where your son in law works. What a great job he has!
How fun! I can’t wait to see the interview!
Thanks, Teresa!
I’m trying to remember back to when I was in the audience of Home and Family on the Hallmark channel. I can’t remember if they showed us or not (it was unusual for them to have an audience while shooting the show). But it was fascinating to see behind the scenes! Those shows run like well-oiled machines it seems. I can’t wait to watch your interview! I’m sure you did wonderfully!
Yes to how fascinating it is to see behind the scenes and also how the shows run like well-oiled machines!
How exciting!!! Will you let us know when we can see it???? I’m sure you did fabulous.
I also was on television when I was around five. I was on The Bozo The Clown Show. 🤣
I love that you were also on TV at the age of 5!! And yes. Assuming the interview isn’t TOO embarrassing (ha!) I’ll let you all know when you can see it.
Glamazon!!!!
Wait, Family Fued????
Oh, yes! My parents, aunt, uncle, and grandfather were quite the Family Feud champs back in the Richard Dawson 1970s era of the show.
How fun, Becky! I’m sure you did AMAZING. You are always so poised. Early in my writing career I was invited to do an interview on a local television show. I barely even remember it now, it was so long ago. Ha! I’m glad you had fun finding a new dress as bright as your personality. You carry that color exceptionally well. 🙂
Did you know that when I was a teenager I planned my own birthday party featuring a homemade Family Feud? I think I even conducted surveys for the popular answers. Either that or I made up the statistics, I can’t remember for sure and don’t want to incriminate myself. Ha! I do remember that one of the family names I chose to use was the Snodgrass Family. I’m sure the other name was equally humorous, but after 40+ years, the memory’s a little fuzzy. All that to say, I LOVE that your parents were on the Feud and even won!
What a fabulous birthday party theme, Karen! Yes, my parents won several episodes of Feud in a row, appearing on the show as many times as a family was allowed to in that day. Such a fun memory!
As a writer, I’ve been interviewed for TV numerous times over the years. Three times they came to my home. Three times I went to the studio (once being flown up to Montreal, Quebec to do a one hour show). Most often, I’ve been filmed/interviewed at a conference, like RWA, but those were never as in-depth as the ones in my home or in the studio. I had a beautiful (solid) teal pant suit that I wore for the show in Montreal. Looking back, I’m not happy about my hairstyle at the time. LOL!
LOL! The teal pantsuit sounds like exactly the right choice, though. If I’d had a teal pantsuit in my closet, I’d have worn that gladly!
How fun! And what a fabulous dress! Can’t wait to watch it!
Thanks, friend!
In 1960 when I was 5, in Monroe, LA, we had “Happiness Exchange” on Saturday mornings on KNOE. I tap danced with my dance class.
LOL! Sue
What a sweet memory!
What a fun post about your “break-out” interview!! You look darling and that color is amazing!I would agree that it’s hard to not remark how great it is!
Either that or they remarked because their eyes were having trouble adjusting to the brightness.;)
Wow!! How exciting Becky. I can’t wait to watch the interview, I’m sure you did great. Btw you always look fabulous and that dress 👗 is incredible!! 💚
Thanks for the encouragement, Brooke!
Congratulations, that is exciting! I am sure you did amazing.
That dress, though! 💚✅🔥
Wearing something bold (and pulling it off like you did) can build confidence and leave others with a wonderful impression! I love it!
What a thrilling experience for you! I can’t wait to see the interview when it is shared!
Best wishes!!
Woohoo! That is so exciting. I hope you’ll share the link when it’s online.
Do post a link once the show airs, Becky! How fun that must have been! What I remember from the first live TV interview I ever did was the extreme case of cotton mouth I got just moments after the cameras started rolling, and there was no water available! I learned my lesson and now I always make sure to have a bottle of water nearby! Can’t wait to hear the interview!
