Last time I wrote about some transitions in the Klassen household. Now that our eldest’s graduation is behind us, and the boys are busy with their summer jobs, here are the latest steps we’re taking this summer:
Tap Dance Class—I’m literally taking (and learning) new steps with this one. Seven friends from church ages 35-65 signed up together for a beginning adult tap class. Here we are, trying to learn steps from our talented and thankfully patient instructor. So proud of these ladies who were brave enough to try something new and are checking items off of their bucket lists!
College orientation—I recently attended freshman orientation in neighboring South Dakota with my son. Honestly, I thought the two days were a bit overwhelming, and I’m not even the one attending! There was lots of information to absorb and many steps to accomplish (registration, juggling class schedules, student loan processing, etc.) and still more steps ahead.
New Age—No, not that kind of new age. 🙂 I stepped into a new year by having my birthday during the college orientation. Not exactly a party, but I was content to spend time with a friend whose son is attending the same university, and with my eldest son, who bought me a DQ blizzard, which I prefer to cake anyway.
Galleys—I’m now working on the second-to-last step for my next book, the pre-galleys of The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill.
Payback—Our son received his first paycheck yesterday and his first hard lesson on the reality of taxes. 🙂
What new steps have you taken (or learned) lately? Hope your summer is off to a great start!

I recognize many of those steps, Julie, though I haven’t tried the tap. I always thought it would be fun to make my husband take a ballroom dancing class with me, but so far I’ve taken pity on him and not pressed the issue. 🙂
We just went through New Student Orientation with our daughter as well. The day after I got back from Germany. No rest for the weary. Ha! My brain is still tired from so much new material crammed into such a short amount of time.
I’m hoping that all your next steps are good ones, Julie!

Thanks, Karen. Orientation right after a European trip? Yikes. Glad you survived. 🙂 And yes, DO take a ballroom dance class with you husband. So. Much. Fun!

Yes, your family is indeed making life changes. I always thought that God was good to put fun and excitement in potentionally scary experiences as He moves us along in His plan for our lives.
Thank you for the video of your dance class. It does look like a great activity for all of you.
I look forward to your next book.

Thanks, Jen. Yes, thankfully there was some fun among the stressful. My son even stayed up late with a buddy and overslept through his first session the next morning. He’s got the college-thing down already! 🙂

We’re taking some of the same steps, Julie. I’m not learning to tap dance but my son graduated high school too and we did the whole college orientation thing as well. Happily, it was only a ten minute drive to his college since he’ll be local. I love the title for your new novel and the look on your son’s face – priceless! LOL!

Hi Jen. Thanks for noticing. His expression cracked me up as well. Hope your son’s college experience is a great one!

What a great experience to take a tap class! My granddaughter’s dance studio holds classes for adults, and they perform in the recital, which is always a grand production – this year was Peter Pan – and I really cheered for those ladies who performed three numbers. The ages seemed to be about the same as you mentioned.
Really looking forward to your new book. I introduced an online book friend from Australia to your books, and we have read three together – Girl in the Gatehouse, Lady of Milkwood Manor (both rereads for me), and The Painter’s Daughter. She even read Lady Maybe, the only one of yours that I haven’t read, but need to get to this summer.
Was wondering how to find info about the British Blooms contest – have looked back several times.
Hope you are enjoying the summer as you go through the new changes.

Hi Betty,
Thanks for introducing my books to your friend from Australia! How fun to have a friend from another country. And, sorry you missed the contest–it’s been over for some time now. Now, YOU need to take a tap class at your granddaughter’s studio! 🙂

Thanks for the reply, Julie. I did enter the contest – was just wondering when the winners were announced.
I also considered taking a dance class – either tap or jazz, but have had trouble with my right leg for the past two years and was just diagnosed in March with spinal stenosis. So far it’s not too bad, but I can never count on support for that leg. Really enjoyed The Dancing Master, which was another reason I thought about taking classes.
Thanks for your wonderful books that cover all aspects of life in 1800’s England. I learn so much from reading them!
