Summer Author Chat with Deb

I’ve loved reading my fellow bloggers’ answers to these questions. Here are mine:
Favorite Coffee Order – An Americano with heavy cream made in the Breville espresso machine my husband gave me for my birthday last year. It can be hot or iced, no sugar please, and I’ve only found one coffee shop that makes it better than I can. And Ken bought me beans from that coffee shop’s roastery for this year’s birthday, so now I can make the BEST right here at home! Hat tip to Coffeehouse Five in Franklin, Indiana.

Favorite Hymn or Worship Song – I love the old hymns I grew up on. So rich in theology and truth. A favorite is the majestic “Holy, Holy, Holy” that I first remember hearing at my Uncle Jim’s high school baccalaureate when I was seven years old. My favorite contemporary worship song is “Goodness of God” especially as sung by CeCe Winans. It’s the anthem of my life because truly… ♫♪All my life He has been faithful, all my life He has been so, so good! ♫♪
Writing Soundtrack – I love writing to music (as long as it doesn’t have lyrics), and some of my favorite music to write by is movie soundtracks. I choose something that matches the mood of the scene I’m writing, and oh, it’s powerful how much it adds to the writing experience. Recent favorites I have on repeat are Aaron Zigman’s Wakefield, Alexandra Harwood’s All Creatures Great and Small, and Breton Vivian’s score from The Madison.
Where I Write Best – I love my office, a corner guest room that we recently added a large arched window to. But one of my secrets for not getting carpal tunnel and some of the other maladies writers suffer, is to change locations and positions often. Probably my favorite place to write in perfect weather is our screen porch that is high off the ground and feels like a treehouse!

Favorite Summer Dessert – Watermelon! I love it as much as my husband hates it, which means I get the whole melon to myself! 🙂
The opening paragraph from an upcoming book – Here are the opening lines from my new novel, Who Names the Stars, releasing this summer:

What is currently on my nightstand – I don’t have a big enough word count to name all the books on my nightstand. Truly, two stacks are piled high and threaten to topple over every night when I climb into bed! But I’m currently reading my agent Steve Laube’s new non-fiction, Sacred Margins: On the Spiritual Life of a Writer; and Denise Hunter’s new novel, More than Friends.

I love a good coffee too and we have a Nespresso Verteo machine. I’m reading Karen Witemeyer’s Part of your World and currently love Bless God by Brooke Ligertwood.
I’d definitely enjoy writing in your “treehouse.” I swap between my office, dinisng table a co-working space.
Debb, it was SO good to see you last month at the Blue Ridge conference! Love hearing your favorites.
Deb, I could feel my heart soar as I read “Holy, Holy, Holy” and heard the song in my head. So many favorites!! Even though I’ve been writing in silence lately, I think I must add The Madison score to my writing playlist. It is beautiful. (I am also a soundtrack writer, when I use music.)
Yes, “Holy, Holy, Holy” does that to me too, Robin! Heart-soaring! And oh, the Madison score is so beautifully haunting!
I enjoyed reading your favorites. Wish I had a screened porch. I have a lovely patio, but sometimes bugs invade. Looking forward to your new book. Have read several in the Christian Fiction Readers Challenge – Becky’s and Robin’s. Planning to read yours and Tammy’s. Also, enjoyed your traveling adventures in Virginia.
I didn’t know I “needed” a screened porch until we bought a house that had one! It is simply my favorite place in the entire house, and I’m spoiled now…I don’t think I could ever live in a house without one! (Unless God asked me to. 😉 )
The church my parents attended when I was about 3 years old had the choir processing in to Holy Holy Holy. I would sing it all week long between Sundays.
You reminded me that in my small church growing up, the kids processed to Sunday School to “Onward Christian Soldiers.” I love that song to this day, and my wonderful Sunday School teachers made SUCH a difference in my life!
Love your screened porch. And the weather in which to use it! 🙂
Thanks, D’Ann. That’s the nice thing about Missouri, the weather is OFTEN nice enough to spend time on the porch!
I love an Americano, too, from my local coffee shop because I don’t have a machine. In the Fall, though, it must be Pumpkin Spice Latte!! Summer dessert? Ice cream, of course. My nightstand? At least 2 book plus my Bible and devotional booklet plus a lamp plus…let’s face it – my nightstand is kind of cluttered. And as to a favorite hymn – I’m definitely in the “Holly, Holy, Holy!” camp but there are so many other oldies that I love, too! Decisions, decisions…
And by the way – I LOVE the new look of “Inspired…” So classy and sharp graphics!!
Robin H. doesn’t brag enough on herself, but she is the talent behind the beautiful new website!
And I could be very happy with all your choices: pumpkin spice, ice cream, a cluttered nightstand… 🙂
I’m reading Sacred Margins too. Well—it’s on the bed side stand. I’m on vacation with massive family and had sole possession of 1 and 3 year old grandkids for first couple days. Let’s be honest. Not much reading done other than Spot the Dog.
Haha! I hear you on Spot the Dog being your only reading for those few days. I adore babysitting our grandkids…such a great way to get to know them better…but wow, it is TOTALLY EXHAUSTING! (And gets more so, the older I grow!)
