Sweet Silence

April 8, 2026 By Dani Pettrey 6 Comments

Happy Wednesday, friends!

In our rush around society, we often forget to take a deep breath, to look out at the horizon, to soak in God’s majestic creation surrounding us. To listen to our babies or grand babies (in my case) laughter, to watch a butterfly fluttering around the bush in the back yard, to enjoy the scent of fresh tomatoes and spices wafting off the stove from our cooking dinner. There are so many nuances in the quiet moments of life, I fear we miss (I know I do) because we are racing around trying to check things off our To Do List for the day. But even more frightening is….

Without quiet, how will you hear God’s whispers?

God says in His Word:

“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” ~1 Kings 19:12

God came in a gentle whisper. A gentle whisper. How often are we quiet enough and still enough to hear that whisper? I admit in my case, not very often. And I worry about what I am missing by staying so busy. What could God be whispering to my soul if I just slowed down long enough to hear Him?

I don’t know about you, but it is in my quietest moments in which I hear God the loudest–during my quiet time with Him in the morning as the sun is rising in the sky, as I’m still and writing, as I sit and watch the ocean tides. He comes and calms my soul in a way I can’t describe when I take time out and simply listen.

How about you? When do you hear God speak the loudest?

I pray you have a blessed Wednesday, and I challenge you to take five minutes after reading this to simply sit and be still. Shut off your phone. Close your computer. And, just listen.

Blessings,

Dani

This is such a good follow-up to Angie’s post on Monday. And I’m with you: I don’t create enough quiet moments in life to hear His voice. I hope to do that more, and I think God might be speaking through you and Angie. Thank you. 🙂

Such a good reminder, Dani, that we must intentionally seek out those quiet times in this loud and busy world. I think this is why I especially appreciate our church’s Dark Saturday prayer time during Holy Week. The church is dim and quiet. There is a prayer guide or you can just pray. But it’s a sweet time of quiet in which the Lord’s voice is much clearer to me than in the chaos of every day.

Thank you for sharing these thoughts.
Recently a friend gifted me with a rocking chair. And I’ve had the opportunity to sit on the front porch–30 min. every now and then–and just sit and listen. I, too, am amazed at God’s beautiful green earth–particularly during this season. And, yes, I have noticed the yellow butterfly and carpenter bees that seem to be attracted to the watermelon pink azalea blooms. I’ve noticed the swaying of the pine trees across the road in gentle breezes, and the flapping of our flag as the wind blows stronger. And I’ve watched the antics of a squirrel or two as they scamper up and down trees and scurry across the road. I’ve also listened to birds and tried to decipher their songs. I think one is saying, “Teacher, teacher.”
Thank you, for this reminder, to sit still and listen.
BTW, I am currently reading One Wrong Move, and thoroughly enjoying it. 🙂

Thanks for the reminder to be still and quiet before the Lord, Dani. This is something our life group studied recently, and I’m terrible at it!
