Tellin’ Tales
Since this photo was taken two years ago, we’ve experienced many changes. Some we’re still grieving, and others we welcome. So many tales to tell.

This photograph has even more to say, but you’ll have to lean closer to hear it. Pounds have been lost and gained; furniture has been moved; secrets have been kept, and hearts have been broken. By month’s end, yet another Pearson will head to college, and we’ll be left with two to school at home. Our baby boy has grown tons, and over the weekend, he and his mustache marched further into teen-hood. (That’s the closest I’ll come to call him a teenager.) We celebrated by going to see the latest Spider-Man adventure and having a family dinner with our newlyweds.
Hubby and I try to prepare our hearts and theirs as much as we can. Any little thing reminds us of yet something else to tell our peeps–“Do this…” “Don’t forget that…”–whatever we can share of ourselves to guide them along. In much the same way, our grandparents imparted important lessons when they birthed our parents and gave us their stories and traditions. They also shared a precious faith. Mama has often told me how my Grandma Viola prayed heartily for me when I was little, even if I refused to stay the night. (I’ve always loved home!)
When I think of all the parts of my life—great and small—that have directed and redirected my path… Spiders. Photographs. Arguments. Soapy dishwater. Biblical figures. Oscar (my dog). A song. Neighbors. Recipes. A color. An algebra problem. They all inspire my life and my writing—my blog posts, a plot twist, the titles of my novels, characters, the stories themselves.
But nothing shapes me more than my faith and my family, in all our comings and goings.

Every time I flip through the photos on my laptop, I have the same thoughts and feelings. So may changes, sometimes barreling down on us like a freight train. Some of them wonderful, some of them heartbreaking. And yet one steady thread runs through it all: God is faithful. And I love how those experiences and that truth inspire your writing!
Deb, it took me hours and more than a few paragraphs to express what you said in what?…five lines. So glad my readers are faithful, too. 😆 Congratulations on your latest award!
Hi Robin, I loved seeing the photo and reading about your family. What a rich legacy you enjoy and are passing on. Only two left at home to homeschool! So many changes for you in the past few years. God bless you and you continue your journey with your family and with your writing!
Do you remember the fairy tale, Seven at One Blow? Though homeschooling our seven has been more wonderful than “grim,” (haha) that title expresses how quickly it seems the years have flown by. Holding on as tightly as God and my peeps will allow! Blessings to you and your writing, Carrie.
Beautifully written. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thanks so much for reading and responding, Katherine!
You have a beautiful family, Robin. It’s so hard to let them step into adulthood. Sounds like you’ve done a fabulous job preparing them.
Isn’t it? Sometimes I think it’s my peeps who’ve ushered ME into adulthood. Lots to learn (and write about)! And I know you get it. Thanks for reading.
