- I was born and raised in Southwest Georgia and I grew up on a farm. I cropped tobacco, strung tobacco and hung tobacco high up on rafters in an old creaky barn. It was hard work and I’d walk the distance from the fields and barns back to my house, my hands and clothes covered with tar. I also picked peanuts and pulled corn and drove tractors and planters and big trucks. I had to beg my daddy to let me drive the equipment, because girls weren’t supposed to do that. But he needed the help! I’m the youngest of seven and four-my three older brothers and one sister-have gone to Jesus. I have this portrait from Louisiana artist Ron Atwood in my den because when I saw it, it reminded me of the house where I grew up, dog included!2. I took the original selfie! A little known fact. This is circa 1973-74, my senior year of high school. I bought a cheap camera and went all over the countryside, snapping away. I remember turning the camera on myself!3. I married my high school sweetheart right after we graduated and eventually we moved to Atlanta where he went to work for General Motors and I stayed home to raise our daughter. I knew I wanted to be a writer but when a friend gave me a couple of romance novels to read while he worked at night, I thought “This is the kind of book I want to write.” I always wanted to write sweet instead of steamy, however! Forty-two years later, I’m still with him and writing sweet romance! We have two grow children who do not like it when I post pictures of them!4.I love shoes. Everyone knows that! But I still have a pair of boots that I bought in 1983. I still wear them! 5. I love roosters! My former home was decorated with lots of roosters but when we moved I kept just a few, this piece of art being one of my favorites. It’s also a Ron Atwood and this is a Mardi Gras rooster. (We lived in Louisiana for over thirty years.)6.I once rode a gurney through Times Square, during a bomb scare, because I slipped on our wet bathroom floor in the hotel room and hit my temple on the marble counter! Ouch! I also carried a New Orleans Saints gnome on that trip with me, for a friend! What an adventure! You can see my butterfly bandage and black eye in this picture.7. I had the flu when I sold my first book in 1993. I was so sick I couldn’t get out of bed. But I had the phone there with me. I thought when I heard the NY voice, that a telemarketer was calling and I almost hung up. I was so ill, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! (No pictures of that day–I looked like death warmed over!!) 8. I’m not a very good swimmer, but I love water. I love being around water and looking at water. Living in Florida, I get to do that a lot. I also love trees. Here’s a shot of a beautiful tree in front of the bay. 9. I mentioned I’ve been married for forty-two years. We moved to Atlanta and lived in four different apartments there. Then we moved to Louisiana and lived in two apartments and then three different houses there. Now we’re in Florida and we’ve lived in a townhome on the bay and now a one-level house about a mile from the bay. I’ve become very good at packing! 10. I have a wicked sense of humor that gets me into trouble on a daily basis. My brothers were all jokesters and my daddy loved to tease and tell jokes. Since I followed them around, it’s no wonder I am the same. But I do try to live by this rule: (from CrossCards)

So nice learning more about you, fellow Georgian. 😉 I love water as well, but I only love looking at it or being near it. I don’t like getting IN the water unless I can see the bottom, or if it’s rain. heh

Loved learning more about you, Lenora! Wes and I thoroughly enjoyed our waterfall adventure last fall in Georgia after the ACFW conference. You have a beautiful home state. I still remember seeing you and your hubby at the Pancake Pantry. So yummy. 🙂 So now, every time I see your picture, I’m going to associate it with raspberry pancakes. Not a bad association. Ha!
Lenora says
Cheryl, we must be cousins! I am the same. My mother was terrified of water but I’m not quite that bad!
Lenora says
I remember that, Karen. I don’t mind that association. Love me some pancakes. I’m so glad you had a nice time in Georgia. It’s a beautiful state. It was so nice to see you during ACFW!

What a fun post, Lenora. I especially loved the original selfie!
Lenora says
Thanks, Becky. Who knew!!! I was ahead of my time. Growing up there, I was isolated from my friends in town so I had to get creative at times. I remember that was a cloudy day and in dramatic fashion, I went with the gloominess and chased the clouds!

I loved hearing about your childhood on the farm in Georgia. Do you have any standalones or series that feature farm life? We’ve never lived on a farm, but my neighbors just got a rooster and I’m assuming some hens. I haven’t seen them up close yet, but have heard the rooster several times.
Lenora says
Sylvia, I have a lot of stories set on ranches since my publisher loves ranch stories but I have always wanted to do a farm story. Maybe where the heroine returns from the city and finds out all about country living again. And of course, finds herself a handsome farmer! You just gave me that idea!! Thanks! Yes, roosters are good alarm clocks! (One of my chores was gathering eggs. Hens would fuss, rooster would chase me and then there were the snakes and rats!!!!

Thanks, Deb. It brought back a lot of memories. And I forgot to show our grand-tortoise Mr. George. He lives with a turtle lady while my daughter and her air force husband are stationed in Japan. He is an African tortoise and they get really big!

I loved your story of how you grew up. Can’t wait to tell my husband who also spent a lot of his earlier years in South Georgia and cropped tobacco. I haven’t read any of your books but I surely want to now that I feel I have almost met you. I love good historical romances. I also trust in the Lord for all that life is,and will be.
Lenora says
Thank you, Dot! Most of mine are contemporary, but I sure hope you’ll give them a try!

Loved reading your ten. I got to see tobacco hung in a barn for the first time a few months ago when I visited an Amish community in Tenn.
I too love the water! Sitting looking at it with a cup of coffee. If I was drowning I wouldn’t be able to save myself.
I live in Alabama, nothing like the south. We’ve had spring all winter long.
One more thing, I love shoes too! I have quite a collection. My husband doesn’t understand….he says, “You only have two feet, why do you need so many?” Men, they just don’t understand!
