The Hardest Book I’ve Ever Written (Plus a Giveaway!)

September 16, 2016 By Jody Hedlund

john-newton-quote-2

I’m super excited about the release of my next book, Newton and Polly, which hits shelves Sept. 20, next Tuesday!!

This is another historical fiction in the same vein as Luther and Katharina. And this one is about another hero of the faith, the writer of Amazing Grace, John Newton the atheist slave trader, and his beloved bride Polly Catlett.

One of the things I really enjoy doing with my historical fiction is shining the spotlight on a forgotten woman of the past. Unless you saw the Broadway show, “Amazing Grace” last year, you probably don’t know much about Polly Catlett (also known as Mary).

I certainly didn’t know Polly existed, not until I started digging deeper into Newton’s life. What I discovered about their relationship amazed me. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that without her, Newton may never have been drawn away from the slave trade and thus may never have written the most moving hymn the world has ever known.

I’m thrilled to be able to bring Polly Catlett out of the shadows and into the spotlight. But I have to admit the process of bringing this book to life was extremely painful on many levels. In fact, I’d even go as far as saying that Newton and Polly is the hardest book I’ve written.

First the book was challenging to write on a technical level. The plot spans many years from the time Newton and Polly first meet until the end when they finally reach their happily-ever-after. I had to figure out how to breech the passages of time realistically as well as deciding which scenes to bring to life and which ones to summarize.

Second the book was difficult on an emotional level. I went through a period of spiritual rebellion during my youth, and so Newton’s spiritual falling away dredged up feelings regarding that. Now as a mother of a prodigal son, I found that writing about Newton’s rejection of God and his estranged relationship with his father took on a much more personal meaning.

Finally the book was challenging on an editorial level. The macro edits (aka content edits) were especially brutal. My editor made a lot of suggestions for changes that were spot-on, but also required a great deal of rewriting. I literally spent hours upon hours for an entire month attempting to polish the book. Even after that, I still had additional rewriting during a later edit.

While Newton and Polly was a difficult book to write, I’m happy to report that it turned out to be a powerful and moving story about God’s grace. It moved me to tears the very last time I read it for my final edit.

Now, I’m beginning to get reviews from early readers who are being moved as well. One of the ladies on my launch team said this in our Facebook Group: “Oh goodness Jody, you did it again!!! Wrote the most emotionally charged, amazingly beautiful story I’ve had the pleasure of reading!! I don’t know how I’m ever going to write a review worthy of this book. My heart is full.”

If you pre-order the book by Sept. 19, you can get a free PDF for a beautiful Amazing Grace print (shown in the picture below). For more information, visit my publisher’s website.

I always known John Newton was a slave trader who was saved by God’s “amazing grace” and wrote the song “Amazing Grace”. I did not think about a spouse or family at all. I can’t wait to read this book as I just finished your book “The Daring Sacrifice” and loved it. Thank you for your hard work!

I know a good bit about John Newton, having grew up in church, attended private Christian school, and played the piano for most of my life (the first hymn I learned was Amazing Grace, and my teacher at that time wanted me to know the story behind hymns that I learned). But I never even thought about a family life. I’m excited to read this one and learn more about a remarkable man!

Hi Jody, It was so interesting to read more about the process of writing Newton and Polly, and I’m looking forward to reading it! I first learned about Newton when we homeschooled and we read his biography. He also played a part in the movie Amazing Grace about Wilberforce. I love your idea of writing about forgotten women in history! Brilliant!

Your uber-efforts were well worth it! It is one of the most moving stories that I have read in a long time and exemplifies God’s unconditional love through the lives of two people who were willing vessels . . . . . . . at least after some pretty rough “bumps in the road” to redemption.

But Polly is quite new to me as far as memory goes at least, but I have no doubt she was a powerful influence in his life.

Thank you for this wonderful, generous offer. May God continue to bless and guide you as you seek to glorify Him.

I did know the basic story of John Newton and how he came to write Amazing Grace, one of the most often sung hymns in our church. In fact, on a trip to Maine in July, we stayed in our favorite hotel, which is our favorite because of the beautiful music played nightly in the great room by a fantastic pianist, who has become our friend. Bill played Amazing Grace on our first evening back, announcing it was for my husband, a recently retired Methodist minister.

I love the hymn but really don’t know anything about either John Newton or his wife. Looking forward to reading the book soon! Loved all your Beacons of Hope books. I’m from Upper MIchigan so it’s nice to read about back home!

I love the story of John Newton (I have even used it as part of a devotional in my class), but I don’t know the story of Polly. I can’t wait to read this book.

Congratulations on what sounds like a wonderful novel! I know very little about John Newton, only that he had been a slave trader who gave it up after becoming a Christian. I, too had a long period of rebellion, so while I don’t want to think about those years anymore because of the things I did, I do know that I am forgiven because of the shed blood of Jesus. Getting that from my head to my heart isn’t always easy. I do hope your son returns to faith sooner rather than later.

I love the song and knew he was a slave trader but do not know the story. Nor do I know anything of the story of Newton and Polly. I am looking forward to reading the story. The storyline sounds powerful and something I can relate to.

I have heard of John Newtons story in two different sermons by two different pastors, both had some major differences on what happened in his life, so it will be interesting to read your version.

“Amazing Grace” is my favorite hymn, not only for it’s beautiful message and melody, but because it is so well-suited for any situation that life throws my way! I’m excited to read about the man behind the song – and the woman behind the man.

I do know a little bit about John Newton’s story. Nothing as in-depth as this book would hit on though, especially in regards to his life with Polly. I love historical fiction, and am SO excited to read this new book by Jody. Winning is always better though for my budget!

Also, loving the cover art on this book. It really seems to fit the theme of the book! ♡

I’ve seen the movie “Amazing Grace” that is mostly about William Wilberforce, but also has John Newton in it. I’ve also read some historical fiction books that have John Newton as a minor character. I’d love to read a whole book about him though.

I saw a little about the story of the song from a Gaither’s tv show. The singer was a black man that explained the song can be played on all the black piano keys. He explained the writer was an overseer on a slave ship & heard a slave singing / chanting below deck. I’ll add it to my “TBR” list. I sounds so good. Thank you for offering the giveaway. Be thankful in call things.
