My novella, Because of You, just released as part of The Christmas Heirloom novella collection! Thus, I thought I’d share with you the inside scoop on how the collection came to be. Oh, and offer a giveaway — which you’ll find at the end of this post. 🙂
In August of 2016, I attended the American Christian Fiction Writers conference in Nashville alongside numerous writing friends. Sarah Loudin Thomas, Kristi Ann Hunter, and Karen Witemeyer were all there.
While at the conference, Kristi and Karen chatted about the possibility of joining forces for a multi-generational collection of Christmas novellas. Shortly thereafter, they pitched the idea to me and I told them I was definitely interested. After the conference, we corresponded. We even braved the technological hazards of a four person Skype meeting in order to brainstorm our concept. After fleshing out our individual story ideas, we submitted a proposal to our publisher, Bethany House.
Bethany House gave us a thumbs up, and we signed our contracts in December of 2016.
At that time, I was busy writing Falling for You, so I put the Christmas novella on the back burner. After turning in Falling for You June 1st of 2017, I took a few weeks off to rest and recover from deadline dementia. Then I began writing Because of You in late June — not at all a Christmas-y time of year!
Just for fun, I looked back at my photos from that summer.
In and around the writing of Because of You, I….
In late July of 2017, His Highness and I journeyed to the Caribbean island of Anguilla so that he could teach tennis to the local kids. I determined to complete Because of You during the hours when he was on the tennis courts. So, while he volunteered, I walked along the resort’s pathways and down blazing-hot beaches, imagining Christmas music, snow, cookies, and cider.
I finished Because of You on that trip and was delighted to: A) collaborate with Karen, Kristi, and Sarah on a collection that tells the love stories of four women separated by time but linked by ancestry and a brooch believed to bring true love. And B) add a Christmas story to my current Bradford Family Romance series. Because of You falls between my novels Falling for You (now available) and Sweet on You (which will release in May). It stars Maddie Winslow, Britt Bradford’s friend and co-worker at the chocolate shop.
Soon after I sent Because of You to my editor, she contacted me to say that the team at Bethany (comprised of editors, marketing folks, sales folks) had decided not to brand the collection as a Christmas collection. Our stories wouldn’t change. They’d all retain their Christmas setting. But because Christmas books can have a short shelf life, they’d chosen to go with a cover that wasn’t necessarily holiday-centric.
Thus, the collection’s first cover looked like so:
This past March, my editor contacted me again to say that they’d studied the market further and, based on new data, were going to be giving the collection a Christmas-y stamp, after all.
We writers learn to adjust, based on our publisher’s guidance. They’re smart and they always have the best interests of each book at heart. I was cool with the non-Christmas cover. But, between you and me, I was very pleased when they switched course and gave the book its ultimate Christmas cover and title. Hooray!
The Christmas Heirloom is now available at your neighborhood book store, or at the following online sites:
Barnes & Noble – paperback $14.39, ebook $10.99
LifeWay – paperback $15.99
Books-a-Million – paperback $15.99, ebook $9.75

Congratulations to the winners of the giveaway I offered: Charis Zdrojewski, Korin Linaburg, and Caroline Spirduso! Many thanks to all who commented. I appreciate you!
What are you looking forward to most this Christmas?

I can enjoy it and have in the back of my mind what else needs to be done. Meaning I can appreciate our new home, enjoy not only it but the holidays and can’t wait to entertain in it over the holiday with family and friends. Now some snow would make it heavenly for sure. 🙂

Wow, the cover for winter is ok, but the Christmas cover is wonderful. A lot of us read Christmas books all year long. Thank you for this great give a way. Since June I have been with my father constantly in and out of the hospital. Sept. 3rd he died and I found out I was named executor. This last month and a half has been crazy to say the least. I am really looking forward to the great Christmas time we have as a family. It is fun and relaxing. And my sister and I always do something special during the Christmas season. It used to be mom, April and I until mom died. And we have kept it up and so glad we did.

Hilda says
I’m not sure about a “favorite” thing about Christmas. Important things are: really focusing on not only how Jesus’ birth is the beginning of God’s plan to redeem our sins for us (amazing enough all by itself!), but being able to express our appreciation to HIM by blessing others, getting together with family and friends to celebrate and watching the little ones’ excitement, and also the fact that right around Christmas, the days start getting longer! If I were to win the book, I’d want to send it to my dear elderly friend in South Carolina who can’t afford to buy her own books. That would be a nice Christmas gift for her! Thanks for the lovely beach pictures – it was fun to see those. I especially love the one of grandparents and grandchildren – precious!
Rachael K says
We intend to finally spend Christmas with my in-laws, who have been overseas as missionaries for most of our married life, and now that they’re home, we can actually spend Christmas day with them! (Barring blizzards and sickness, of course). Looking forward to reading the book!
