The Jane Austen Festival: Looking Forward, Looking Back

August 8, 2017 By Julie Klassen

In a previous post, I mentioned that my husband and I had the pleasure of attending the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, England last September. Before the costumed promenade, we met Jane Hope who was there photographing the event. A few months later, the Associate Editor of Victoria magazine, Melissa Lester, emailed me to let me know she’d recognized me in Jane’s photographs and asked to interview me for their online magazine. I was happy to oblige. Melissa asked questions about our experience at the festival, as well as about the ways Jane Austen has influenced my writing.

When the gorgeous September issue arrived—the British Issue—I opened the magazine to “Remembering Jane Austen,” and read with interest and pleasure Melissa’s article about the festival, which is accompanied by Jane Hope’s beautiful photographs. Reading it brought back many fond memories, and also makes me look forward to attending the festival again this year. On page 39, I was tickled to see a photograph of my husband and me (below, left). We got a full page—well, from the back. 😉

Yesterday, the online feature (with quotes from me and additional photos) to accompany this article went live. Please read it HERE. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Let me know!

Photos from Victoria’s online feature.

This beautiful magazine also has many other breathtaking photographs sure to please sister-Anglophiles as well as articles about some of my favorites like the Cotswolds, English gardens, tea time, and of course, Jane Austen. Copies are available now at your local bookstore. Take a look!

What a great article! I really enjoyed reading it. And the pictures are absolutely gorgeous! Would love to visit Bath one day during the festival just to see the people dressed up in Regency outfits and costumes.

How fun to discover that that particular photo was of you and your husband! I remember thinking, when my Victoria arrived, that the velvet Spencer jacket and bonnet were just lovely. Lucky girl! It certainly sounds like a wonderful event.

Thank you so much for sharing this article with its beautiful photos. I love that you are described as an “authoress.” Your and your husband’s attire is smashing! Somehow reading Jane Austen novels has not been part of my reading life to date (shameful, I know), but I’m currently reading “Jane of Austin” by Hillary Manton Lodge, a modern retelling of “Sense & Sensibility” and it is inspiring to also read the source material as soon as I’ve completed it.
