Inspired by Life ... and Fiction

Novelists bound by the pen, sisterhood, & more

The Plot Thickens | Kathy Herman

November 23, 2014 By Deborah Raney

Each Sunday “Inspired by Life…and Fiction” shares a Christian novelist’s newest book and the garden spots where they find inspiration.

Kathy Herman’s garden has more birds than blooms—a beautiful collection of hummingbirds, wrens, bluejays, cardinals, and other feathered friends. Since Kathy’s first novel debuted in 2001 as a CBA national bestseller, she’s added many more bestsellers to her credit. Husband Paul is her manager and most ardent supporter. Besides birdwatching in the spacious “backyard” of their East Texas home—mostly the 15th fairway of a golf course—the Hermans enjoy cruising, deep sea fishing, and time spent with their three grown children and five grandchildren. Learn more about Kathy at www.kathyherman.com.

Kathy prefers the view from her kitchen table “office.”

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

Beautiful pictures. We live by a lake and I love to see the different water fowl that come through during the Spring. The Great American Coots are cute and interesting to watch. Every March they appear like clock work.

      Hi Shirley,

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. It’s great fun anticipating the return of certain birds. My favorites are the pine warblesr in winter and the hummingbirds in the spring.

Just must comment on your bird photos! They are absolutely gorgeous! How do you attract so many species?

      Hi Karen,

I’m so glad you enjoyed the pictures. We do have a lot of bird species here in East Texas, but I think most areas of the country do. I guess the key for me is finding out (I googled it, actually) what species of backyard birds I would expect to see here during different seasons of the year, and then putting out their preferred food. In most situations, patience and consistency will pay off.
