Inspired by Life ... and Fiction

Novelists bound by the pen, sisterhood, & more

The Plot Thickens|Candace Calvert

July 20, 2014 By Deborah Raney

Each Sunday “Inspired by Life…and Fiction” shares with our readers a Christian novelist’s newest book and the garden spots where they find inspiration.

Former ER nurse Candace Calvert gives readers a chance to “scrub in” on the exciting world of emergency medicine with her Grace Medical Series — an encouraging prescription for hope. She’s always found peaceful joy in gardening and is thrilled that she and her husband have recently moved back to her native northern California. Their lush, private yard offers a rose garden, soothing sounds of waterfalls, enticements for butterflies and hummingbirds — “and great spots for the grandkids to build forts and play hide-and-seek.” Just what the doctor ordered. Visit Candace’s website at www.candacecalvert.com.

Deborah Raney

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

Thanks for these beautiful pictures, Candace and Deborah!! Candace has a beautiful yard – almost as beautiful as her wonderful books – her love of working in it and beautifying it certainly shows!! A bountiful feast for the eyes!!

Enjoyed the pictures of your garden. Looking forward to reading your new book. Haven’t seen it in the stores yet but looking for it. If I don’t see it in a week or so will have it ordered. Love your medical suspense.

Your garden is gorgeous, Candace! May I come visit you? If I did, I would probably never leave. 🙂

What a delight to be able to share my garden with readers–thank you, Deb. And thank you for the kind comments. I love what my agent (and fabulous gardener!) Natasha Kern says: “Angels live in the garden.” There truly is such soul-soothing peace there. Pat: My next book, By Your Side, releases March 1st. But I do think it’s showing up as a pre-order . . .
