Inspired by Life ... and Fiction

Novelists bound by the pen, sisterhood, & more

The Plot Thickens|Cara Putman

May 24, 2015 By Deborah Raney

Each Sunday “Inspired by Life…and Fiction” shares a Christian novelist’s newest book and the garden spots where they find inspiration.

1 shadowedCara Putman is a woman living her dream. In addition to writing more than a dozen novels, she is an attorney, lecturer at a Big Ten university, active in women’s ministry, and a self-proclaimed all around crazy woman…crazy about God, her husband, and their four kids. Cara graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and George Mason Law School. When not writing into the wee hours of the night, she loves to spend time tending her garden (even weeding—a perfect task for perfectionists) and watching God breathe life into it. You can catch up with Cara at www.caraputman.com.

Deborah Raney

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

Love your pictures, Cara. Your daughter with her flowers is adorable. Your desk looks like mine right now—busy and the way it is.

I love that photo of my girl. She’s adorable — and she picked the bouquet herself. She’s got an eye for color!

Curiosity bids me ask “what is that blue round thingy” in your chair? My inquiring mind wants to know, LOL!!

Gail, my first thought was a frisbie, having been a mom of 5.LOL. Maybe a seat cushion?

It’s actually a disk that makes it like I’m sitting on top of an exercise ball. It helps me sit straighter, etc.

That’s genius, Cara! I have tried typing while sitting on a stability ball but I roll around so much it’s quite distracting! Is there a name for that disk? I’m in the market!

Your yard is beautiful. I’m glad to see someone else whose desk looks like mine.

Thanks! I love the yard! And my desk invariably looks like that when I’m in the middle of a project. There’s nothing I can do about it when I’m creating.

What beautiful photos. A garden I would love to visit! I imagine lots of peace abounds.

I love it! There’s something restful about creating a place for God to showcase His beautiful creation.

Beautiful photos, Cara! I love this feature of this blog. It’s so fun to see what your gardens look like all around the country. Thanks for giving us a glimpse!
