Inspired by Life ... and Fiction

Novelists bound by the pen, sisterhood, & more

The Plot Thickens|Deborah Raney

May 31, 2015 By Deborah Raney

Each Sunday “Inspired by Life…and Fiction” shares a Christian novelist’s newest book and the garden spots where they find inspiration.

Deborah Raney enjoys writing in the gardens tended by her artist husband, Ken. The Raneys recently moved to the city after many years at their little house on the prairie in small-town Kansas. They are enjoying the challenge of city gardening and love hosting their four kids and a growing brood of grandchildren. A Vow to Cherish, Deb’s first novel, was the inspiration for the World Wide Pictures award-winning film of the same title. She’s now working on her thirtieth novel and her newest, Two Roads Home, the second in her Chicory Inn Novels series, will release in June 2015. Visit Deb’s website at www.deborahraney.com.

Planting a shade garden under the deck is the newest garden project.

Though perfect weather days are rare in Kansas, Deb writes outside in
the fresh air whenever possible.
Deb’s favorite part of her office is the coffee bar.

Deborah Raney

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

Thank you, Shirley! My hubby is the chief gardener and landscaper. I love weeding and watering, but he’s the brains of the operation. 🙂

Love the country garden in the city (city for you, that is)! I can see it is going to really bloom as things grow. We take what we love with us and adapt it and it looks great.

    Congrats on the new book!

Thanks so much, Sandy. We really are enjoying turning this yard into a haven.

Wow! I never thought to make a shade garden under my porch. I love it.

It’s such a cool and cozy place to sit in the evenings. And I’ve been surprised at all the plants that seem to thrive with very little sun. (Best of all, the weeds seem to NEED sun. So win/win!)
