On Saturday May 4, I had the honor of joining NYT Bestselling author Jodi Thomas and four other authors from the Lubbock area at a fundraising dinner to benefit literacy. The event took place out in the country at The Red Barn, a wonderful retreat center and quilting barn. I got there a bit early and had the chance to walk around and drool over all the gorgeous quilts on display.
The Red Barn is run by a handful of Christian ladies. They have a quilting shop as well, filled to the rafters with wonderful fabric. And I’m not even a quilter! I loved roaming around in their shop and listening to the Christian music they had playing in the background. What a delightful place!
Here are some of the beautiful quilts they had on display:
I’m standing next to Jodi Thomas in the picture below. The hats that half of us are wearing were made out of paper plates and bowls. So crafty and fun! A hole was cut in the paper plate, it was slipped over the bottom of the bowl, spray painted, then adorned with with flowers and ribbon. I even helped glue some of the ribbon since I was there early.
The lady in the red hat is Terry from Barnes & Noble, Lubbock, who helped organize the event and made all the hats.
We had a wonderful time eating, meeting readers, and supporting literacy. But I have to admit that the quilts stole the show. As did this adorable teapot. Jodi’s upcoming book is called The Little Teashop on Main, so the entire barn was decorated with teapots, teacups, and books. This one was in front of Jodi’s table. Isn’t it precious? I love the little kitten peeking out from beneath the tablecloth.
They let us bring our display pot home along with a teacup that had been at our place setting. I thought it was perfect that I ended up with the baker pot since my next book features a baker heroine. My set has now taken up residence on one of my bookshelves in my office.
I’ve numbered each of the quilt pictures above.
Which are your favorites?

I love #2 and #3!! I would LOVE to be able to visit this quilt shop. Too bad it so far away from where I live. This looked like a delightful day and I’m glad you were able to experience it – too bad I missed it LOL!

Love them all, but #1 has to be my favorite one.
Love the hat idea too.

The quilts are all spectacular, but I was especially drawn to #7 of the dragonfly, etc. since I love nature and marvel at the skill of the quilter to apply all those irregular shapes.

#3 Long years ago, I ventured into quilting and applique. My efforts look like a school girl’s , but it still makes me smile. Everyone is a beginner sometime. You have made this shop sound so delightful; the tea theme was perfect.

I had a hard time picking a favorite. #3 made the biggest visual impact on me with the dark background. I have honey every day in my tea, and I have never seen a honey pot quilt before, so #5 made me grin the moment I spotted it. I just loved all the whimsy and charm and incredible skill on display.

#2 is my very favorite. I love all the different squares – something new and unique in each one! #3 would be next – I love applique and the colors and patterns of this one are gorgeous. What a fun time!

1, 2, 6, & 7–I’d like to make #1! 🙂 Can you tell me the name of the pattern??? 🙂 Please! 🙂
Karen Witemeyer says
Sorry, Barb. I was just an admirer. I don’t know if there was a specific pattern used or if the quilter just created her own design for the appliques. Here is their website: http://redbarnranchtx.com/ You can contact them and ask.

All of the quilts are beautiful. If I had to choose just one quilt . . . difficult choice . . . number 7.
We have a neighbor who is a multiple award winning quilter. She gave me a small table top quilt that she made. I love it! It is often on display on our dining table.

#3 touches my heart. They are all spectacular!

I am partial to #2 and #5. The pots are so cute and the teacups are very pretty!
That was such a cute idea!
I learned how to sew on a Singer treadle. We still use an early Singer electric model at Church for our craft days. I would love to use one for a decoration but I don’t have the room.

I love #2, 3, and 4. #2 reminds me of a quilt my grandmother made for me. #3 is my favorite color and #4 is such a happy design. Thanks for sharing. I’m promoting the June release of More than Words Can Say on my blog. Really looking forward to reading it.
