The Worst Winter in Decades Here in SW Idaho

January 11, 2017 By Robin Lee Hatcher

We don’t normally get a lot of cold and snow in the Treasure Valley where I live. Idaho’s snow usually keeps to the mountains and the eastern side of the state. But we have had a cold, snowy, and dangerous winter, beginning before Christmas. Now we’ve got flooding and homes everywhere with roof damage (including my daughter who is mopping up and repairing today). Schools were closed three days last week and so far, every day this week. Driving is the most dangerous in subdivisions where the snow is still deep and the slush and water as the snow melts (with nowhere for the water to go because drains are covered) tosses your car from side to side. Tomorrow, we head back into the deep freeze which will make things even worse.

Trust me. No one who is living through this will forget the winter of 2016-2017.

But despite all that, it can be pretty. And we’ve been taking care of the birds since they’re having a rough winter too. So I’m sharing some of the pretty photos. You don’t want to see the blackened 12-feet-high piles in parking lots. 😉

I love seeing how you care for your birds, Robin! Sorry about all your snow and flooding, etc. That would ordinarily be Kansas this time of year, but I’m so grateful that yesterday and today our forecast is 60 degrees! Amazing for January in Kansas, but much appreciated since my dad is moving today—from his house in town where he moved to be near my mom, to 40 acres in the country where his heart is so much happier than in town. I’m headed there shortly to help my dad and sister tell the movers where to put furniture. I love bossing people around and arranging furniture, and I love my dad and sister, so should be a fun day. 🙂

Your photos are lovely! Thanks for sharing them.
Here in Colorado the snow is in the mountains primarily and they are getting dumped on! As we say, “That’s where it belongs for water all year.”
Enjoy the photos and endure until spring. This could indeed be a record setting winter.

    Hi Robin,
I totally understand. I live in Oregon and today we’ve been dumped on again with snow. This is the third time in a couple of weeks and it’s getting hard for some people. Driving is really bad and now schools will have to be going later into June. I work at a middle school and while it’s nice to have a day or two off, making it up this summer will be difficult because the students will be eager to get out.
Oh well, God is still good and it’s still beautiful to look at!
    Take care and be safe!

Wow! You have more snow than I do in my part of Ontario, Canada. We got snow last week and again yesterday. Then last evening, we got rain and it washed all the snow away. Looks like spring, now. Wish it was. These are beautiful pictures you posted.

WOW, Robin! We’ve had crazy weather in NE Ohio…last night, gusts of wind up to 50mph…today it was 54° when I got out of work; supposed to be in the 50’s again tomorrow, & then on Fri drop down into the 20’s! And, no snow on the ground…sigh…I like snow, but NOT ice!

Robin, you have my sympathy as I am up in Spokane and we’re in pretty much the same boat. No flooding so far but worries about roofs and driving issues are big. Our thaw is coming next week and all the attendant issues you have mentioned. But the beauty of it all – sunshine on the snow, all 28 inches – makes it tolerable. I love the photos of the birds and feeders and goofy geese and I’m glad that you’re taking care of our little feathered friends – I worry about them, too. Thanks for sharing – it’s been quite a winter in our part of the country.

wow! I hope that everything gets cleared out and cleaned up
I live in SE Alabama, where we have had a mild “winter” We had some 30 degree days earlier this week – but today it’s 75.

    Beautiful shots!

It snowed here 40 years ago this past week. I live in Florida so needless to say it didn’t stay on the ground for very long. Thanks for sending your photos. Some of them are good enough to be on a cover for a book.
