These boots are made for walking

September 16, 2015 By Lenora Worth

So yesterday was National Bootie Day. I’m not sure if that was real or a marketing ploy to get me to buy more boots. I love boots so I usually get a new pair each fall. This weekend I found a pair of sixties inspired black zipper booties. I’ll have to pull out my bell bottoms to wear with those. I thought it would be fun to reminiscence about boots. Did you wear them as a child? Do you wear them now?

I have my favorite flat boots that I wear when it’s cold. They are lined with sheepskin and feel wonderful on my feet. Then I have a pair of red cowboy boots that I love. I’ve had them for twenty years and I still haven’t completely broken in the tough leather. I also have a beige pair of cowboy boots that I’ve had for over thirty years. I’ve had them re-soled twice. They are so comfortable. I have tall boots and short boots and walking boots and bedroom booties. I think I love boots because my first pair were “Go-go” boots. White and shiny and so different from any shoes I’d ever owned. I wore them almost every day until they were too old to wear.

The thing about boots is that they serve a practical purpose. They cover our feet and legs to keep us warm, they work hard to function when we are down in the mud or dirt and they look pretty with anything from jeans to skirts or dresses. Boots are just part of the armor  women wear when they march out into the world. I wrote a book once where the hero was a boot maker. I learned a lot about hand-tooled boots. It’s an art form that has remained solid and steady through the centuries. Boots adjust to their owner and we learn to adjust to out boots. They represent strength and dignity and elegance. We have lots of choices. So happy Bootie day! I hope you’ll pull out your favorite boots and dust them off. They like walking with you.

I loved hearing about the BOOT part of your vast shoe collection! 🙂 My favorite boots I ever owned were a pair of white go-go boots I bought the summer before 8th grade. Those boots were $18 (a princely sum in the late 60s!) and I saved my babysitting money and allowance all summer long to be able to buy them. Best $18 I ever spent! I wore those things every day until they wore out, and they always made me feel like a million bucks. Hmmm… I wonder if they still sell go-go boots??

Yes, Deb. It’s that go-go boot generation! I loved my pair and I worked on the farm to earn enough money to buy another pair the next fall. We should get us some new ones and wear them to a conference!

I remember the galoshes I used to have when I was a kid with the metal buckles that clamped shut. Where I live, boots = snow, which isn’t fun.

Lynn, you must know all about the warm, heavy snow boots that my husband keeps telling me not to order. “We live in Florida, Lenora. You do not need snow boots!” Sigh. Maybe we should have a boot picture day!

I love boots! I grew up in sunny Southern California, so I don’t remember wearing them as a kid. But now that I live in Dallas, boots have become my go-to winter shoe. I most often wear flat soled boots with long knit socks that peek out the tops.

Becky, if you live in Dallas, yes, you must wear boots! Texas is known for some of the best boot makers in the world. That cowboy spirit. Or cowgirl. Your boots sound adorable 🙂
