What are You Reading?

April 26, 2018 By Cara Putman

As a voracious reader, my to-be-read pile never stops.

Literally it is towering beneath my desk and next to my bedside…and on a bookshelf. And you get the idea!

I love books too much. No. That’s not possible. I simply need a vacation to read all the books I have stockpiled. Yes, that’s better.

What’s on your #TBRPile? @Cara_Putman shares some of her recent reads and a @sarahladdauthor #giveaway.

Click To Tweet

I’ve been reading such good books lately. Here are a couple I thought you might enjoy!

I love Sarah Ladd’s regency novels, and The Weaver’s Daughter is no different. She’s set this novel in the period of the weavers’ rebellion as mills are automating the production of cloth. The heroine is caught between the traditions of the weavers and the restrictions placed on women. The hero just wants to forget the war he’s returned from. Together they are caught betwixt and between the mores of their time, the clash of industry, and the tug of love. I’m giving away a copy of the ARC of this novel. Just use the form below to be entered. It was such a good read!

Another one I’ve been thoroughly enjoying is Regina Jenning’s latest novel, Holding the Fort. Regina’s novels always have such fun characters and a sense of humor that is delightful. This one has that, but so much more. There’s a heroine who’s trapped between her past, and what she hopes her future will be. A hero who wants to be more than he is and who is tied to a formal status due to his rank in the US Army. The conflict and challenges between them are real…and humorous. And the possibility of love is sweet…and tangled. For those who love westerns filled with romance and set in fun locations, this book is a fantastic read!

I haven’t forgotten those of you who love a great contemporary romance. Becky Wade’s latest, Falling For You, perfectly fits that bill. This novel builds on her list of strong family based novels, but with the fun of a world-class model and an injured professional football quarterback. I could relate to Willow so much! The oldest daughter who has (almost) always been perfect, and can’t confront or forget or forgive the time she wasn’t. And that has become an insurmountable mountain separating her from Corbin. Then a young girl asks for her help untangling a decades old mystery, and Willow’s walls begin to crumble. As they do, she has to wrestle with who she is and who she wants to be. Toe-curling romance wrapped inside a novel that is so much more!
To enter for the copy of The Weaver’s Daughter, use the form below. Be sure to leave a comment telling me about what you’re reading.

And here’s one to add to your reading list since it releases at the beginning of July — just in time for that summer vacation. Formula of Deception is set in Alaska is filled with international intrigue, historical twists, and a broken heroine who is compelling. This novel is perfect for those who love a suspense that will keep you guessing as you turn the pages. I can’t tell if it’s the first in a series or a stand alone, but I was tugged through the story with a force that kept me wishing for just a few more minutes. It has pacing, a fascinating historical twist set in WWII so you know I loved it, and a heroine I just wanted to protect. A great story.

So now that you’ve seen a few of the books I’ve read, what are you reading? What’s the book you just can’t stop thinking about?

I’m reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah about life in the wilderness of Alaska. It’s a long book, I’ve been quite busy lately, but I’m really enjoying learning more about the rigors of life in Alaska and the interaction of the characters.

  13. Angie Quantrell says

    April 26, 2018 at 7:41 am

These sound great! I just finished a middle grade chapter book called Worth by A. LaFaye. It was very good, set in Kansas during the homesteading days with a big conflict between cattle ranchers and crop farmers. Tragedy, orphan trains, rural school house, and family dynamics kept me hooked. I’m nearly done with Rise & Shine Benedict Stone by Phaedra Patrick. This is more modern, but involves people who have lost themselves and are seeking to discover who they are. Like you, my to-be-read pile is ever growing! I really need to stay away from the bookstore and library…and those little FREE libraries along the roads…who am I kidding? I’m hooked!

I’m the same way with accumulating books. One time when I was discouraged, thinking I’d never get to them all, I changed it around to thinking that I’ll always have something to look forward to as long as I have books stacked up to read. 🙂 Thanks for these recommendations. I had not heard of these authors, so it’s good to learn a little more about their books. Currently I am reading Anchor in the Storm by Sarah Sundin, Drawing Near to the Heart of God by Cynthia Heald, and Adam Bede by George Eliot. I started The Highly Sensitive Person on my Kindle app, which I usually read from before falling asleep, but I decided I needed to be more awake to process that one, so I’ll get back to it after finishing Heald’s book. I’m also going through Joni Eareckson Tada’s Spectacle of Glory devotional book through the year.

I’m not sure what book I’ll read next. I have no shortage of books. I have enough to make my own library, but not the space, unfortunately.

Of all things, I am currently reading Notes From a Scandinavian Kitchen by Morry & Florence Ekstrand- a cookbook! but full of nostalgic memories, fun anecdotes, cultural traditions, and history lessons. I’m also reading Hind’s Feet on High Places (Hannah Hurnard) and James Rubart’s The Man He Never Was. As I’m preparing for surgery and a long recovery, I am loading lots of books on my kindle. Last night I finished “No One Ever Asked” by Katie Ganshert. So much to think about with this book. I highly recommend adding it to your TBR list. The theme is very timely. I especially loved the way the three main characters show us that we need to see others, not with our eyes, but with our hearts.
Today I am traveling back to the Regency period. Somehow it feels safer there. I began reading Sarah Ladd’s latest book, “The Weaver’s Daughter.” Love Sarah’s books!
I am looking forward to Becky Wade’s next book. Five days left until it’s release!
I enjoy Regina Jennings writing, too, but have not read “Holding the Fort”. I will add it to my TBR list, too.
