Writers and Readers—a winning combination

October 10, 2016 By Deborah Raney

teaMy dear Kansas author friend Kim Vogel Sawyer and I were invited to a Book Lover’s Tea yesterday in a small town near Wichita. Not only did the event give Kim and me a chance to see each other—always a delight—but it allowed us to meet with a few of our readers, which is a privilege we writers don’t take for granted.

Oh, my! Did they treat us all! They called it a tea, but it was more like a feast!

These lovely ladies took the tea seriously, sporting charming hats!

This sweet lady is the mom of one of my “Club Deb” friends, and it was such a fun surprise to see her at the tea!

Kim is a wonderful writer, but more than that, she is a wonderful person. I’m so glad God has let our paths cross.

To top off the day, Kim and I each got to bring home one of the darling table decorations. Books and tea…writers and readers. Winning combinations!

If you’re a reader, have you been able to meet some of your favorite writers? Was it a good experience? If you’re a writer, what is your favorite thing about meeting your readers?”

Deborah Raney

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

How fun! That looks like it was a beautiful event, Deb.

It was, Lynn! In a beautiful facility. The tea was held in the Fireside Parlor, a cozy room with a nice little library donated by one of the residents. It’s fun to meet our readers in small batches so we actually have time to get to know each other more than just surface! (And I made 3 new Facebook friends in the process! 🙂 )

I’m so happy for you Deb. What a fun looking group and such a selection of tea goodies. I knew if you’d just swap a coffee mug for a tea cup experience, you’d love it!! 🙂

I had pomegranate tea, Diane, and it was delicious! Didn’t even need sugar…naturally sweet. I do enjoy tea, but if given the choice between coffee and tea, I usually choose coffee. 🙂

It truly is, Beth! I know Kim and I felt SO encouraged after this event. I hope the readers felt the same way. 🙂

It was, and you would have fit right in with your lovely hats and finery, Carrie! 🙂

I have been blessed to be able to meet several of my favorite authors, including you and Kim. I’ve also met several other Kansas authors who write Christian fiction and a few in neighboring states. Thanks for sharing your photos; it looks like it was a really fun event. I think that sometimes we readers are so thrilled to be able to meet favorite authors that we forget what a blessing we can be to them.

That’s for SURE, Pam! It’s honestly one of the greatest privileges I’ve had as a writer…getting to meet the people I write FOR!
