Naming Favorites

April 14, 2025 By Deborah Raney

Most novelists will tell you that it’s difficult for them to name a favorite among the books they’ve written. I used to say that question was like asking me if I had a favorite child! But after writing more than forty books over the past thirty-plus years, one series of mine has risen to the top as a favorite. Interestingly enough, I wrote the first two novels in the Camfield Legacy series more than twenty years ago! But after continually getting requests for a third book in the series, I revisited my characters and setting and wrote Breath of Heaven almost three years ago to complete the series.

Quite honestly, it’s my readers and reviewers who have made the series my favorite. Not only does the Camfield Legacy series include my bestselling books and have more reviews than my other books, but the series has collectively won more awards than any of my other series or novels.

The original covers from WaterBrook (with an added “swoosh” after winning the RITA Award).

A new cover for a reissue of Beneath a Southern Sky for a WaterBrook budget line.

The first two books were also translated to Dutch. These
were some of my favorite covers at the time!

As I do with most of my books, I have collected inspiration photos for the series on my Pinterest boards. If you’d like to see how I pictured my characters and setting, click HERE or on the image at left

The books are available as audiobooks from Silverton Audio and with Audible.

And the reason I’m telling you all about this series? Because starting tomorrow, April 15 (technically, midnight tonight!) the collection of all three Camfield Legacy novels in e-book format will be on sale for only $1.99! That’s less than 70 cents each! If you haven’t read this series yet, I hope you’ll take this chance to grab this deal!

And if you are one of my lovely readers who has kindly bought these books, reviewed them, judged them in contests, or shared with your friends and family, THANK YOU! I don’t think readers understand how very much we authors appreciate all you do to make our books successful (so we can keep writing!)

DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career. Forty books later, she's still creating stories that touch hearts and lives. Her novels have won RWA's RITA Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She is also a three-time Christy Award finalist. Deb is on faculty for several national writers’ conferences and served on the executive board of the 2,500-member American Christian Fiction Writers organization for 18 years before retiring in 2022. She is a recent transplant to Missouri, having moved with her husband, Ken Raney, from their native Kansas to be closer to kids and grandkids. They love road trips, e-biking, Friday garage sale dates, and breakfast on the screened porch overlooking their wooded backyard.

Hi Deb, I still remember the plot and characters well after reading the first two many years ago. Now I need to read that third book!

I haven’t read this series, but I want the paperbacks. Are the most recent covers Ken’s designs?

Yes, they are! I should have mentioned that! Except for two series (8 books) and one novella that I don’t have the rights back on yet, Ken has designed covers for all my books! (When an author gets rights back to their books, they usually do NOT get rights back to the cover art, which is fine since it’s nice to give the book a good refresh when it’s re-released. Thanks, Betty!

I love hearing about the enduring success of this series, Deb! (And I’m about to release a box set of my recent series. A box set is a first for me, so it’s great inspiration for me to see you’ve done the same.)

Oh, that’s wonderful that you’re doing your first boxed set! I love making all the novels available with one click. It’s a savings for readers and a nice way for me to offer a bargain on books I’ve poured my heart into.
P.S. A great way to give a series longevity is to wait 20 years before writing the final book in the series! Haha! 🙂

I just finished one of your novels two nights ago–and I loved it!–but THIS is still my favorite series of yours. I was riveted!

Awww, thank you Andrea. I’m so glad!
