Raney Day Trippin’

October 14, 2019 By Deborah Raney

As many of you know, Ken and I have been traveling, and as I write this, we are halfway through our seven-week trip. I’m posting from our oldest son’s house in Seattle where we are spending three full weeks while Tarl is traveling in Europe for work. We’ve set up offices here at his house to catch up on our work and dog-sit his sweet pup, Socks. We’re thoroughly enjoying being temporary dog owners, and given that we’ve discovered Tillamook ice cream and other Seattle treats, we’re thankful for a pet that needs walking daily!

Socks wasn’t very happy to say goodbye to her master, but Tarl trained us well before he left, and we are getting along wonderfully and really enjoying having a place to work and to come and go from as we see some of the sights around Seattle. We’re hoping to make a day trip to Mount St. Helens on Tuesday.
This is the route we took (right to left) from Southeast Missouri through Arkansas to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and then up through Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and finally Washington. Ten states so far, and we’ll hit some new ones coming home next month.
Meriwether (the name we gave our camper van) has been parked in some of the prettiest spots from Missouri to Seattle.
Our first stop-and-stay spot was San Antonio, Texas for the 2019 American Christian Fiction Writers Conference and board meetings. It’s always wonderful to connect with my writer friends, meet with my agent, and attend or teach classes, such as the panel I moderated. I also got to meet my new editor for the Chandler Sisters novels, Janyre Tromp. When we showed up in red jackets and identical eyeglasses, I got a hint of why we work together so well! 😉
We’ve been blessed to get to see some friends and family along the way, including our four Texas grandkids. (And after we left Missouri, my author copies of Chasing Dreams arrived so my two littlest grandgirls helped their mommy open the box and show off the newest book!)

In a few weeks, I’ll tell you about the second half of our trip, which has only just begun. We are posting about our adventures on Instagram at RaneyDay Trippin’ if you’d like to follow along.

What has your autumn looked like so far? Have you traveled or stayed home? What is your favorite thing about the changing seasons…or do the seasons even change where you are? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below! Hope it’s been a happy October so far. Till next time…

We have been working on putting our yard to bed for the winter. Here in beautiful Arkansas, where I see you visited, we have glorious falls. Love the colors, the crunching of the leaves, the children coming back our to play after the scorching summer. Love your pictures, can’t wait to see more. Have fun. Safe travels.

We loved our time in Arkansas, Marti! What a beautiful state!

I’ve enjoyed following your travels on Instagram! You’ve posted some amazing pictures! I also took a trip to San Antonio for ACFW and had a wonderful time. Fall has arrived in Pennsylvania. So far it’s been pretty quiet. I’ll travel to Nashville next month but otherwise will be sticking close to home other than a trip or two a couple of hours north to visit family.

Oh, I bet Pennsylvania is gorgeous in the fall. Nashville will be pretty too. Have a great trip!

This has been a very different fall for us so far. Five funerals of relatives and close friends in the last month. I ready to be done with that!! Thankfully most of those who passed away claimed Christ as their Savior, so that is a tremendous blessing. Where would we be without the hope that God gives us! Thanks be to God!!

Amen! And I’m so sorry your fall has been full of funerals, Kathy. October is a hard month for us with the anniversaries of my sister, sister-in-law, and my mom’s deaths. But as with your family, I know they all died in Christ, and that means glorious reunions to come.

You were very close to me when you went through Houston. San Antonio is a fabulous place to hold a conference, so I’m glad you enjoyed your time there. What fun to travel around and see children, grandchildren, grand dogs, friends, countryside, etc.

I’m enjoying the slightly cooler weather in the Houston area and the pumpkin flavors of fall. Since October is my birthday month, I’ve been celebrating for weeks now with family treats, lunches out with friends, and the like.

Ah! Happy birthday, Suzanne! So glad you’re enjoying cooler weather in the Houston area! It was hot, hot, hot when we were there! (Fortunately, our camper van has a great AC.)

Thanks for sharing your travels, as well as pictures of family and of Socks.

We are enjoying the cooler weather and fall. We’ve stayed close to home for school (homeschooling my grandson and daughter going to nursing school) and my other daughter recuperating from surgery.

God is so good and provides such gorgeous, picturesque seasons for us to enjoy throughout the year.

BTW, I enjoy taking my dog, Cinnamon, for walks on our neighborhood trails, similar to the one in your picture with Socks. 🐕

Those trails are such a gift to communities! And their pets! We have enjoyed these in the Seattle area so very much. And yes, I’m with you: LOVE the four seasons…wish winter and summer were shorter and spring and fall were longer, but the changes are beautiful!

I just love autumn. We can’t travel a lot because we are older and somewhat disabled. But I love the fall colors and love to decorate for the season. A mixture of scarce rows and Halloween pumpkins amongst my mums and geraniums I still have.Theres pilgrim figurines also. I love the colder weather after summer’s blazing 🥵 heat and humidity. There’s something to enjoy though in every season!

Having the seasons is almost like “traveling” to another place. And I’m with you, I love the cooler fall weather!

Your travels are so much fun! Did you drive through Yakima on your way to Seattle? You missed me. 🙂 It’s been snowing also, so you’ll have to watch the passes on the way back. But Seattle in the fall? Gorgeous. We had pumpkins, grands, and the puppy over the weekend. I think the puppy (chocolate lab) was the most work. Yikes! Safe travels and happy exploring!

We did! And wondered how to pronounce it? Can you tell us?? We’ve pretty much decided to go back via California (where Ken has a brother and sister) and Arizona to avoid risking snow on all the more northern routes.

Okay. You’re in trouble. I am about a quarter mile off the freeway exit so you went right by me without getting a hug.

    • Deborah Raney says

      October 14, 2019 at 11:00 am

Oh, Robin! We knew we were probably very close to you and talked about you as we went through. But we were in a race to get to Seattle before Tarl flew out and we hadn’t seen my mom’s cousin for years and years, and then when we found out her daughter was there visiting from the Tacoma area, that made our decision for us! THEN we talked about visiting you if we came back that way, but we’ve pretty much decided to go way south and visit Ken’s brother and sister in CA. But we WILL be back to Seattle and will hope to see you next time, if not before!

What a wonderful trip! Be sure to eat some of that wonderful, fresh salmon while you are in that part if the country. And go to Multnomah Falls if you get a chance. Have ”honey from the sky” At the famous brunch they have there.

So funny you should say that, Cele! I tried to order salmon at the Italian restaurant yesterday but our server talked me out of it and into chicken instead. Not sure of her reason, but thankfully the chicken was great. I’ll order salmon next time because I do love it, especially on the coast!

What a wonderful trip you and husband have made. You will enjoy the memories forever. Don’t get too attached to a pet. When you want to travel, you either have to take them with you or find a dog sitter.

    • Deborah Raney says

      October 14, 2019 at 11:29 am

Yes, that’s why we’re happy to “borrow” our kids’ animals. As much as I’d love to have a cat in our house again, it wouldn’t be fair to the cat as much as we travel. And we definitely don’t want to take a cat with us! I can’t even imagine (though I know some do travel with cats.)

What a wonderful journey! And you both look so happy!
We drove across country in 2017 to see our daughter in California (we usually fly) and enjoyed two days in San Antonio on our return. It is a lovely city. Glad you got to visit. Safe traveling on your way back?

    • Deborah Raney says

      October 14, 2019 at 8:50 pm

Thank you Betty. I agree about San Antonio. (It happens to be the city of my birth, since my dad was in the Air Force at the time. So it has a special place in my heart.)

What a great trip! But you could swing over to Spokane before you leave Washington! It’s awfully pretty right now with all the leaves turning! Thanks for a great “travelogue”. And that pup is adorable.

It is so fun to see your adventures, Deb. I’m a bit late reading this and commenting, but I can see you’re having a marvelous time. You’re in the state where my novel is set! I think it’s beautiful there. Montana is also amazing. I love to travel and am enjoying seeing the sights through your pictures. Have fun on the second half of your trip!
